古时候去买物品都是用竹蓝装，篮子是竹做的，盛火会烧掉，装水会漏光，只能装木和金，更不会盛土，所以叫买东西，不说买南北。
“东西”二字在现代汉语词典里的解释是“泛指各种具体或抽象的事物”。买东西一词则通常是对具体物体的总称。
在中国古代，最早人们买什么就称买什么，并没有“买东西”这个词儿。据说，买东西的叫法源自宋代理学家朱熹，他觉得买什么说起来既感到别扭又不方便。
我国古代把"五行""天干"对应起来，组成"五方"，即东方甲乙木、南方丙丁火、西方庚辛金、北京壬癸水、中方戊己土。
东方属木，代表一切植物，如花草、树木、蔬菜、庄稼等；西方属金，代表一切金属矿物，如金、银、铜、铁、锡等等；南方属火，火是一种化学现象。
北方属水，中方属土，由于水、土和火是最常见的物质或现象，以致被古人忽视。而木（植物）和金（矿物）最受人们的重视，可以代表一切有用物质。
于是，人们就把代表"木"和"金"的两个方向联在一起，组成一个词——东西，用它代表世界上的所有物体。

有一次，朱熹去拜访好朋友盛温如，适逢盛手挎篮子上街。朱问：“此刻你欲何往？”盛答：“上街买东西。”
“买东西？”朱熹很奇怪，又问：“那么南北也可以买吗？”盛曰：“不可，我这篮子只装得金类木类，水类火类是装不得的。”
朱熹听罢连连点头。他想，古代的木金水火土“五行”与东西南北中“五方”是一一对应的，东方属木、西方是金，属金属木的物质用篮子能够装下。
南方属火，北方属水，水火之类篮子当然无法去盛。因此，他提出将买什么统称为“买东西”。
不过，这种说法开始不仅不为人们接受，而且还觉得有些可笑，但由于这个代称确实方便，渐渐沿用成习。
此外，通常用来骂人的话“不是东西”也是缘于五行五方，说某人不是东西那就是南北啊，亦即是说这个人像水火一样无情无义。
其实这只是目前流行的一种解释，至于为何叫买东西，还有另外一种说法。
在隋唐时期，坊市的管理是非常严格的，不仅对于营业的时间有严格的规定，甚至于连交易的地点都有明确的规定，这样管理起来也是比较方便的。
当时的商贾从各地而来，按照规定聚集于长安城的东市和西市。如果长安城的市民要去交易，只能去东市和西市，久而久之，人们便将购物称之为“买东西”。
这和我国商业发展的轨迹基本符合，成为目前普遍接受的一个说法。而朱熹的五行说法，目前来看只是一种玄学的延伸，不怎么靠谱。
