他人对我们的关注之所以如此重要，主要原因便在于人类对自身价值的判断有一种与生俱来的不确定性——我们对自己的认识在很大程度上取决于他人对我们的看法。我们的自我感觉和自我认同完全受制于周围的人对我们的评价。如果我们讲出的笑话让他们开怀，我们就对自己逗笑的能力充满自信；如果我们受到他人的赞扬，我们就会对自己的优点开始留意。反之，如果我们进了一间屋子，人们甚至不屑于瞥上我们一眼，或者当我们告诉他们我们的职业时，他们马上表现出不耐烦，我们很可能会对自己产生怀疑，觉得自己一无是处。

从感情和物质这两方面来看，我们通常都会对自己的地位产生焦虑，这并不奇怪。我们的地位决定了我们可能赢得多少世人的爱，而世人对我们的关爱又是我们看重还是看轻自己的关键。地位对我们都是至关重要的，它是打开关爱之富的金钥匙：没有了他人之爱，人类将失去自信；没有了他人之爱，我们将难以按自己的秉性办事。
