When I told my father that I was moving to Des Moines, Iowa, he told me about the only time he had been there. It was in the 1930s, when he was an editor of the Literary magazine of Southern Methodist University (SMU) in Dallas, Texas. He also worked as a professor at SMU, and there was a girl student in his class who suffered from a serious back disease. She couldn’ t afford the operation because her family was poor.
Her mother ran a boardinghouse in Galveston, a seaside town near Houston, Texas. She was cleaning out the attic (阁楼 ) one day when she came across an old dusty manuscript (手稿 ). On its top page were the words, “ By O. Henry.” It was a nice story, and she sent it to her daughter at SMU, who showed it to my father. My father had never read the story before, but it sounded like O. Henry, and he knew that O. Henry hand once lived in Houston. So it was possible that the famous author had gone to the beach and stayed in the Galveston boardinghouse, and had written the story there and left the manuscript behind by accident. My father visited an O. Henry expert at ’ s.
My father then set out to sell it. Eventually, he found himself in Des Moines, meeting with Gardner Cowles, a top editor at the Des Moines Register . Cowles loved the story and bought it on the spot. My father took the money to the girl. It was just enough for her to have the operation she so desperately needed.

Why do Americans struggle with their weight, while the French, who consume rich food, continue to stay thin?
Now a research by Cornell University suggests how life style and decisions about eating may affect weight. Researchers conclude that the French tend to stop eating when they feel full. However, Americans tend to stop when their plate is empty or their favorite TV show is over. According to Dr. Joseph Mercola, a health expert, the French see eating as an important part of their life style. They enjoy food and therefore spend a fairly long time at the table, while Americans see eating as something to be squeezed between the other daily activities. Mercola believes Americans lose the ability to sense when they are actually full. So they keep eating long after the French would have stopped. In addition, he points out that Americans drive to huge supermarkets to buy canned and frozen foods for the week. The French, instead, tend to shop daily,
walking to small shops and farmer’ s markets where they have a choice of fresh fruits, vegetables, and eggs as well as high-quality meats for each meal.
After a visit to the United States, Mireille Guiliano, author of French Women Don’ t Get Fat, decided to write about the importance of knowing when to stop rather than suggesting how to avoid food. Today she continues to stay slim and rarely goes to the gym.
In spite of all these differences, evidence shows that recent life style changes may be affecting French eating habits. Today the rate of obesity----or extreme overweight----among adults is only 6%. However, as American fast food gains acceptance and the young reject older traditions, the obesity rate among French children has reached 17% ----and is growing.
53. In what way are the French different from Americans according to Dr. Joseph Mercola?
A. They go shopping at supermarkets more frequently.
B. They squeeze eating between the other daily activities.
C. They regard eating as a key part of their life style.
D. They usually eat too much canned and frozen food.
54. This text is mainly about the relationship between _______.
A. Americans and the French B. life style and obesity
C. children and adults D. fast food and overweight
55. This text is mainly developed ________.
A. by contrast B. by space C. by process D. by classification
56. Where does this text probably come from?
A. A TV interview. B. A food advertisement.
C. A health report. D. A book review.

One afternoon last week, I saw three tearful children from my son’ s school being comforted by teachers. That morning, my 11-year-old had stomach pains, retching (干呕 ) into a bowl. Talking to other mothers later, I heard about other children with stomachache or difficulty sleeping the night before.
What caused so much pain? Sports day. Sports day might be necessary at a highly-competitive independent school, but not at a village primary school. For the children who can fly like the wind, sports day causes no problem. For those who are overweight or just not good at sport, it is a nightmare (噩梦 ). Even for those who enjoy running but fall halfway down the track in front of the entire school and their parents, it can prove a disaster.
Why do we put our children through this annual suffering? Some may say competition is character building; or it ’ s taking part, not winning, that ’ s important; or that it is a tradition of school life. I just felt great pity for those children in tears or in pain.
Team games at the end of sports day produced some close races, wild enthusiasm, lots of shouting---and were fun to watch. More importantly, the children who were not so fast or quick at passing the ball were hidden a little from everyone ’ s eyes. Some of them also had the thrill of being on the winning side.
I wish that sports day could be abandoned and replaced with some other less-competitive event. Perhaps an afternoon of team games, with a few races for those who want them, would be less stressful for the children and a lot more fun to watch.
57. What can we learn about the author’ s son from Paragraph 1?
A. He talked with some mothers.
B. He comforted his classmates.
C. He had difficulty in sleeping.
D. He suffered from stomachache.
58. Sports day is still an annual event in this school probably because _________.
A. this is an independent school.
B. it is a tradition of the school.
C. it helps children lose weight.
D. children enjoy watching sports.
59. What does the author think about team games?
A. They should include more stressful races.
B. They are acceptable to different children.
C. They should be abandoned at primary schools.
D. They are less fun for those who love running.
60. What is the author’ s attitude towards sports day?
A. Critical. B. Neutral. C. Positive. D. Ambiguous.
61.
On the Mediterranean island of Majorca in Span, the locals are angry. Too late. In the last
quarter of the 20th century, they obtained profit from foreign visitors wanting to buy up property
on their beautiful island. Suddenly it occurred to Majorcans that the island no longer belonged to
them. Its 630,000 inhabitants (居民 ) are increasingly convinced that the 14 million visitors a year
are far too much of a good thing. Water is in short supply, pollution is worsening, and there is no
affordable housing left for them to buy.
62.
Tourism is the world ’ s largest and fastest growing industry. In 1950, 25 million people
traveled abroad; last year it was 750 million. The World Tourism Organization predicts that 1.6
billion people, by 2020, will travel each year, spending over two trillion (万亿 ) US dollars.
63.
A.
Real winners of tourism B.
Negative effects of tourism C.
Growing tourism in the world D.
Developing tourism with caution E.
Benefits to the locals from tourism F. Tourism problems and possible solutions
The host country may not see many benefits. In Thailand, 60% of the $ 4 billion annual
tourism income leaves the country. Tourists arranged by travel companies tend to stay at big
foreign-owned hotels, buying few local products. Mass tourism () usually leaves little money
inside the country and most of the money goes to the airlines, the tour operators, and the foreign
hotel owners, who are the final winners of tourism.
64.
These days the industry’ s most urgent question may be how to control the flow of tourists. A
typical example of this is Italy, where great cultural like Florence and Venice can’ t handle all the
tourists they get every summer. In Florence, its half-million inhabitants have to live with the
pollution, traffic jam, and crime caused by 11 million visitors a year. Now there’ s talk about how
to solve these problems, like raising hotel taxes, or even charging admission to some public
squares. The idea is to discourage at least some visitors, as well as to pay for cleaning up the mess.
65.
For many poorer countries, tourism may still offer the best hope for development. The
Vietnamese are doing their best to open up their country. Libya has paid $ 1 million for a study.
They all want tourists. Yet if something isn’ t done, tourism seems certain to become the victim of
its own success. Its effect on the environment is a major concern. For this reason, tourist
organizations need to have second thoughts about what exactly they are trying to sell.

8.带to与不?带to的不?
1. The child?ren (play) _____? the violi?n over ther e will go on the stage? next week.
主语是Th?e child?ren,谓语部分是?will go on the stage?,动词pla?y显然在句?
1.____t?ired of Tom’s all-talk-no-actio?n attit?ude, Julia? decid?ed to do the job all by herse?lf.
C) Getti?ng D) Have got A) To get B) To have got
1. The last bus (go)____, we had to walk home.
2. Weath?er (permi?t)____, the space?ship will be launc?hed tomor?row eveni?ng.
3. The work (finis?h) _____?, they may go home.
4. The probl?em (discu?ss) _____? at the meeti?ng- room now, the worke?rs had to wait outdo?ors.
为fini?shed(已完成)和bein?g discu?ssed(正在进行)。
____ that Bob had got promo?ted, his frien?ds came to congr?atula?te him.
A) Heard? B) Havin?g heard?
C) Hear D) To hear
把it作为?
1. It is an honou?r for me (be) _____? your Engli?sh teach?er.
2. It is no use of us (wait) _____? at home like this.
It是形式?
1. The boy (cry)____ over there? is my young?er broth?er.

E?veryo?ne in our class? was worki?ng hard and doing? what we could? do to enter? a good colle?ge。 定式短语(to enter? a good colle?ge)是用作目的? 动词(could?)
分词短语 hopin?g to catch? the early? bus 用作伴随状?语。
3.
? (in) doing? sth。 He spent? every? minut?e he could? spend? in pract?ising? spoke?n Engli?sh.
4.
选A。
can’t help to do sth = 不能帮助做?某事
can’t help doing? sth = 禁不住做某?
或be devot?ed to,其中的to?
(2) 选A错误:若将 do 改为 doing?
(3) 选B正确:all her time devot?ed to doing? exper?iment?s为独立主?
(4) 选C错误:因为all? her time 与 devot?e 为被动关系?,故应将de?votin?g改为de?voted?。
All her time is devot?ed to doing? exper?iment?s,此句并没有? 上and或?so,则可选D,或将D将中?的is 改为 being?
A和D均是?
但若选A,you fly 是一个主谓? 语 will be 相冲突,所以只能选?D,即动名词f?lying?
8.
【解析】正确答案为?B,因为 get used to与pa?y atten?tion to 这两个结构?中的to均?
接宾语,要借助介词? on或up?on,即用于 insis?t on [upon] (doing?) sth;但它有时的?
I have some cloth?es to wash等?,即尽管其中? I have some cloth?es to wash 中的 to wash 就是由该句? 语 you来完?

My friends found me 26 because I didn't let others get close to me. I thought I was going to go on like this for the rest of my life 27 Angela appeared.

"Hi. Can I sit down?"
I raised my head and there she was, with an irresistible smile on her round face. "What are you looking at?" she asked.
"Ants."
"What are they doing?" "No 29 ."
"I bet they're playing games and make friends. Don't you think so?"
That was how our 30 started and it didn't stop. We talked about everything under the sun-the ants, the clouds, my little niche(处境)-until it was sunset.
Then suddenly, she saw my 31 . She just stared. My heart 32 . What I feared most had happened and I knew for sure she would 33 me now. She stood up, pointed at my back and said, "I know 34 your back is hunched." I closed my eyes like a criminal waiting to be 35 . I begged in my heart for her to 36 , but she just kept on going. "I know what you've got in there. Do you?" "No," I answered 37 .
She bent and whispered in my ears.
"Your back is hunched because you've got a pair of wings from the angels."
I was 38 . I looked into her eyes and her 39 touched my heart. From that day on, I started to learn to 40 myself because I have the wings of an angel and a kind - hearted friend.

Everyone gathered around and Paddy read out loud, slowly, his tone growing sadder and sadder. The little headline said: BOXER RECEIVES LIFE SENTENCE.
Frank Cleary, aged 26,professional boxer. was today found guilty of the murder of
Albert Cumming , aged 32, laborer ,last July. The jury (陪审团)reached its decision after only ten minutes, recommending the most severe punishment the court could give out.It was, said the judge,a simple case. Cumming and Cleary had quarreled violently at the Harbour Hotel on July 23rd and police saw Cleary kicking at the head of the unconscious Cumming. When arrested,Cleary was drunk but clear-thinking…
Cleary was sentenced to life imprisonment with hard labour .Asked if he had anything to say , Cleary answered,“Just don't tell my mother.”
"It happened over three years ago, " Paddy said helplessly. No one answered him or moved, for no one knew what to do. "Just don't tell my mother, "said Fee numbly. "And no one did!Oh. God! My poor, poor Frank!"
Paddy wiped the tears from his face and said. 'Fee, dear, pack your things. We'll go to see him. " can't go ." she said without a hint of pain, yet making everyone feel that the pain was there. "It would kill him to see me. I know him so well -- his pride, his ambition. Let him bear the shame alone,it's what he wants. We've got to help him keep his secret. What good will it do him to see us? "
Paddy was still weeping, but not for Frank; for the life which had gone from Fee's face, for the dying in her eyes. Frank had always brought bitterness and misfortune ,always stood between Fee and
himself. He was the cause of her withdrawal from his heart and the hearts of his children.Every time it looked as if there might be happenings for Fee . Frank took it away. But Paddy's love for her was as deep and impossibile to wipe out as hers was for Frank.
So he said, " Well, Fee, we won't go . But we must make sure he is taken care of. How about if I write to Father Jones and ask him to look out for Frank?
The eyes didn't liven ,but a faint pink stole into her cheeks " Yes. Paddy, do that . Only make sure he knows not to tell Frank we found out .Perhaps it would ease Frank to think for certain that we don't know"

There is a boy in my gym class (I’ll call him Bill) who has unbearably yellow teeth that almost make everyone feel unpleasant. Recently another boy told Bill that he should “go Ajax” his teeth. Bill was crushed. Had the other boy been thinking, he would have realized that there is a better way to handle such a situation. He could have dealt with it with tact. He could have showed this hurtful truth in a more
careful, sensitive way—that’s “tact”.
If a person isn’t sensitive to another’s feelings, there is no way he or she can be tactful. Yesterday, my 5-year-old brother proudly announced that he had cleaned the screen on our television set. Unfortunately, he used furniture polish(亮光油), which produced an oily film on the television screen. My mother smiled and thanked him for his efforts —and then showed how to clean the screen properly. Her sensitivity enables my brother to keep his self-respect. Yet, sensitivity alone does not make tact.
“Tactfulness” also requires “truthfulness”.Doctors, for example, must be truthful. If a patient has just been disabled in an accident, a tactful doctor will tell the truth—but express it with sensitivity. The doctor may try to give the patient hope by telling them curing techniques under study or about advanced equipment now available. Doctors must use tact with patients relatives as well. Instead of bluntly say ing, “Your husband is disabled,” a doctor might say, “I’m sorry, but your husband has lost feeling in his legs and…”
Tact should not be confused with trickery. Trickery occurs when a nurse is about to give a patient an injection and says, “This won’t hurt a bit.” Instead of trickery, the nurse might guarantee the patient that the discomfort of the injection is a small thing compared to the benefits of it. It would also be thoughtful for the nurse to tell the patients about some of these benefits.
Tact is a wonderful skill to have, and tactful people are usually admired and respected. Without tact our society would become an intolerable place to live in.
49. When told he should “go Ajax” his teeth, Bill probably felt ________________.
A .surprised B .cheated
C .regretful D .painful
50. According to the author, his mother’s praise for the brother is _______________.
A .both sensitive and tactful B .sensitive but not tactful enough
C .truthful but not tactful D .sensitive but trickish
51.The fourth paragraph mainly talks about __________________. A .how to comfort the patients
B .how to use trickery carefully
C .differences between trickery and promises
D .another feature of tact
52.Which of the following shows the structure of the passage?
(The numbers stand for the paragraphs)

Canadian scientists have found that the more emotional or mental challenges a person faces in a day, the less determined they become to work out physically.
However, the findings should not stop us from keeping fit. Experts believe that willpower (意志力)is like a muscle, and needs to be exercised to help one avoid the temptation (诱惑)spending a night on the couch instead.
Kathleen Martin --Ginis, a professor of kinesiology---the science of movement 一 who led the study, says everyone has a limited amount of willpower, and that it will be reduced by stress. Miss Martin --Ginis, of Canada' s McMaster University, explains, "Cognitive (认知的)tasks, as well as tasks such as regulating (调整)one' s emotions, can reduce one' s capacity to force oneself to exercise."
Her team of scientists performed a so-- called " Stroop" test on volunteers to reach their conclusions. The experiment involved showing participants words associated with colors but printed in different colors, for example, the word " blue " written in red ink . Participants were divided into two groups. One group was asked to name the color of the ink, instead to say the printed word, while the other wasn't Martin ― Ginis says," After we used this cognitive task to use up their self--regulatory capacity, the participants didn't exercise as hard as those who had not performed the task. The more people concentrated on the cognitive task, the more likely they were to skip exercise sessions (活动时间)over the next eight weeks. You only have so much willpower .
However, there are ways to strengthen willpower. The study found the listening to music before going to the gym can help, as well as making a commitment to work out with friends. It also concluded that willpower can be stretched by constantly taking, or forcing oneself to study an extra hour each night.
Martin - Ginis adds, "There are strategies people can use to help revitalize (使恢复活动) themselves after they’ve used up their self-regulation. Willpower is like a muscle: it needs to be used to stay strong.
53.According to the experts, human willpower ____________. .
A. can be exercised through muscle movement
B. can regulate itself to resist temptations
C. is weakened by stressful cognitive or emotional tasks
D. is reduced by lack of physical exercise.
54.We learn from Paragraph 4 that the experiment__________..
A. made use of the Stroop test
B. asked one group of participants to name the words
C. required researchers to write the word "blue" in red ink to make it easily recognizable.
D. showed that those who hadn't performed the task were smarter than those who had 55.Which of the following is in agreement with Miss Martin ― Ginis' idea?
A. Human's willpower is limited to a certain level
B. The cognitive tasks could make people ignore exercise
C. Challenging tasks could make people ignore exercise
D. Exercise is an important way to strengthen one's willpower.
56.What can we infer from the passage?
A. Willpower can be challenged to become powerful.
B. McMaster University is famous for its kinesiology.
Effective ways to resist temptations have been found.
the study has an impact on the science of movement.

I believe that animals possess greater intelligence than most people think. But plants? I've never considered the possibility of plant intelligence. The idea seems absurd.
Yet I've had friends argue that plant intelligence might exist. "What are the differences between plants and animals?" they ask, and then they argue about certain species that seem to share the intelligence of both plants and animals.
New research suggests that plants communicate via "networks". Plant communication is not a new idea, and cannot indicate that its is a kind of intelligence, but it is still interesting.
Recent research from Vidi researcher Josef Stuefer at the Radboud University Nijmegen shows that plants have their own chat systems that they can use to warn each other. Therefore plants are not boring and passive organisms that just stand there waiting to be cut down or eaten up. Many plants form internal communication networks and are able to exchange information networks and are able to exchange information efficiently.
Many herbal plants such as strawberries and clovers (三叶草)naturally form networks.
Individual plants remain connected with each other for a certain period of time by means of runners (plant stems that grow along the ground and put down roots to form new plants). These connections enable the plants to share information with each other via internal channels. They are therefore very similar to computer networks. But what do plants chat to each other about?
Recently Stuefer and his colleagues were the first to prove that clover plants warn each other via the network links if danger is nearby . If one of the plants is attacked by caterpillars (毛虫) ,the other
members of the network are warned via an internal signal. Once warned, the intact (完好无损的)plants strengthen their chemical and mechanical (机体的)resistance so that they are less attractive to advancing caterpillars. Thanks to this early warning system, the plants can stay one step ahead of their attackers. The research has shown that this significantly limits the damage to the plants.
Again, I don't believe this reflects intelligence, but it's is certainly fascinating.
57.The author thinks that the plant communication___________. .
A. is absolutely a new idea B. is a sign of plant intelligence
C. is related to animal communication D. is interesting and fascinating
58.Which of the following statements about the research is NOT true?
A. Most plants have no chat system and are passive organisms.
B. Individual plants can also remain connected with each other.
C. The communication between clover plants can protect them from damage.
D. The research is the first to show how clover plants warn each other. 59.The author's attitude towards plant intelligence is _______________.
A. unconcerned B. doubtful C. positive D. hopeful
