The elephant is the biggest four-legged animal in the world. It is also, perhaps, the gentlest; but not always!
Elephants are like us in some ways. They live for a long time fifty or sixty years. They can remember things very well. They never forget great sadness or great happiness. A female elephant dies; her daughters and her grand-daughters are sad for many months. They stay with the dead
body. Then they carry a bit of it away with them. They never forget a dear friend.
Elephants are like us, but they are also different. They live in families; families of females. There will be a few young males---- a few, baby boys. But the females will soon send them away. An elephant family keeps only its daughters, mothers and grandmothers and its great grandmothers.
The females stay together for fifty, sixty… a hundred years. The older animals look after the
young one. The mother teaches their daughters and set a good example.
And what happens to male elephants? Well, the young males stay with their mothers for a time. Then they must leave the family. The females just send them away. A bull elephant does not often have a friend. He lives apart away from the family, and often away from other bulls.
Sometimes the females call a bull. He can visit them then, and stay for a time. But soom his wives and sisters send him away again. The females have a very happy family life. What do the bulls think about it? We don?t know.

Treasure hunts (寻宝 )have excited people’s imagination for hundreds of years both in real life and in books such as Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island. Kit Williams, a modern writer, had the idea of combining the real excitement of a treasure hunt with clues (线索 ) found in a book when he wrote a children’s story, Masquerade , in 1979. The book was about a hare, and a month before it came out Williams buried a gold hare in a park in Bedfordshire. The book contained a large number of clues to help readers find the hare, but Williams put in a l ot of “red herrings”, or false clues, to mislead them.
Ken Roberts, the man who found the hare, had been looking for it for nearly two years. Although he had been searching in the wrong area most of the time, he found it by logic (逻辑 ), not by luck. His success came from the fact that he had gained an important clue at the start. He had realized that the words:“One of Six to Eight” under the first picture in the book connected the hare in some way to Katherine of Aragon, the first of Henry Ⅷ ’s six wives. Eve n here, however, Williams had succeeded in misleading him. Ken knew that Katherine of Aragon had died at Kimbolton in Cambridgeshire in 1536 and thought that Williams had buried the hare there. He had been digging there for over a year before a new idea occurred to him. He found out that Kit Williams had spent his childhood near Ampthill, in Bedfordshire, and thought that he must have buried the hare in a place
he knew well, but he still could not see the connection with Katherine of Aragon, until one day he came across two stone crosses in Ampthill Park and learnt that they had been built in her honor in 1773.
Even then his search had not come to an end. It was only after he had spent several nights digging around the cross that he decided to write to Kit Williams to find out if he was wasting his time there. Williams encouraged him to continue, and on February 24th 1982, he found the treasure. It was worth £ 3000 in the beginning, but the excitement it had caused since its burial made it much more valuable.
1).The underlined word “them” (paragraph 1) refers to _______.
A. red herrings B.treasure hunts
C. Henry Ⅷ ’s six wives D.readers of Masquerade
2).What is the most important clue in the story to help Ken Roberts find the hare?
A.Two stone crosses in Ampthill.
B.Stevenson’s Treasure Island.
C.Katherine of Aragon.
D.Williams’ hometown.
3).The stone crosses in Ampthill were built_________.
A. to tell about what happened in 1773
B. to show respect for Henry Ⅷ ’s first wife
C. to serve as a roadsign in Ampthill Park
D. to inform people where the gold hare was
4). Which of the following describes Roberts’ logic in searching for the hare ?
a..Henry Ⅷ ’s six wives.
b. Katherine’s burial place at Kimbolton.
c. Williams’ childhood in Ampthill.
d. Katherine of Aragon.
e..stone crosses in Ampthill Park.
A. a— b — c — e — d B. d— b — c — e — a
C. a— d — b — c — e D. b— a — e — c — d
5).What is the subject discussed in the text ?
A. An exciting historical event.
B. A modern treasure hunt.
C. The attraction of Masquerade.
D. The importance of logical thinking.
2. Ask one student to point out the clues of the passage.

4. Check the answers.
(D.C.B.C.B .)
5. Do some explanations on the passage.
6.Train of Thought(解题思路)
这是一篇推理故事, 前后联系紧密, 细节环环相扣, 结构严谨, first we must grasp the clues of the passage.
From the sentence The book contained a large number of clues to help readers find the hare, but Williams put in a lot of “ red herrings ” , or false clues, to mislead them. “ red herrings” means “the fact that leads attention away from the matter being considered.”
One of Six to Eight 这一重要指导寻宝的暗示语与 the first of Herry VIII’s six wives联系起来。 3).B.
From the sentence that they had been built in her honor in 1773. we can find the answer.

总结: A (2011·新课标)When milk arrived on the doorstep
When I was a boy growing up in New Jersey in the 1960s, we had a milkman delivering milk to our
doorstep. His name was Mr. Basille. He wore a white cap and drove a white truck. As a 5-year-old boy, I
couldn’t take my eyes off the coin changer fixed to his belt. He noticed this one day during a delivery and
gave me a quarter out of his coin changer.
Of course, he delivered more than milk. There was cheese, eggs and so on. If we needed to change
our order, my mother would pen a note—―Please add a bottle of buttermilk next delivery‖—and place it in
the box along with the empty bottles. And then, the buttermilk would magically(魔术般)appear.
All of this was about more than convenience. There existed a close relationship between families
and their milkmen. Mr. Basille even had a key to our house, for those times when it was so cold outside
that we put the box indoors, so that the milk wouldn't freeze. And I remember Mr. Basille from time to
time taking a break at our kitchen table, having a cup of tea and telling stories about his delivery.
There is sadly no home milk delivery today. Big companies allowed the production of cheaper milk
thus making it difficult for milkmen to compete (竞争). Besides, milk is for sale everywhere, and it may
just not have been practiced to have a delivery service.
Recently, an old milk box in the countryside I saw brought back my childhood memories. I took it
home and planted it on the back porch (门廊). Every so often my son's friends will ask what it is. So I start
telling stories of my boyhood, and of the milkman who brought us friendship along with his milk.
56. A. to show his magical power B. to pay for the delivery
C. to satisfy his curiosity D. to please his mother
57. What can be inferred from the fact that the milkman had the key to the boy's house? A. He wanted to have tea there. B. He was a respectable person. C. He was treated as a family member. D. He was fully trusted by the family. 58. Why does home milk delivery no longer exist?
A. Nobody wants to be a milkman now. B. It has been driven out of the market. C. Its service is getting poor. D. It is forbidden by law. 59. Why did the author bring back home an old milk box?
A. He missed the good old days. B. He wanted to tell interesting stories. C. He needed it for his milk bottles.

? Passage2
? A human body appears to be rather soft and delicate, compared with that of a wild animal, but it is actually surprisingly strong. In deed, its very softness
and looseness is an advantage; it makes man good at moving about movement of
all living things of his own size, because he can do so many different things
with his limbs. Man’s games show how he can control his own body. No other land
creature can swim as skillfully as man; more has such varied grace; very few
lives as long as he; none is so strong in its natural resistance to disease.
Therefore man has a great advantage in his battle against the risks of damage
and death that threaten him. (1minute)
