The post-everything generation
Frank Thomas is a sophomore at Princeton, majoring in literary theory. He hopes to become a human rights lawyer.
1 I never hoped to understand the nature of my generation or how American colleges are changing by going to Lit Theory classes. This is the class where you look cool, a bit sleepy from too many late nights and wearing a T-shirt with some ironic comment such as "Been there, done that and yes, this IS the T-shirt". That's how I spent my time on the course, struggling through difficult subjects like gender theory and
post-colonialism, and at the same time checking my iPod for something good to listen to. But when I started to study postmodernism, something clicked and made me sit up and take a fresh look at college life.
2 So what is postmodernism? Hard to say, almost by definition it can't be defined ... it's just kind of negative and against everything that came before it. And that makes it difficult to see what it is. The term was first used in 1949, but no one has yet decided what postmodern attitudes mean for the future of culture or society. Yet for me, it made me curious, because "postmodern" seemed to describe my cool, sleepy and ironic, T-shirt wearing friends.
3 We're "post" in so many ways, post-Cold War, post-industrial, post-baby boom, post-9/11. We're a generation that comes from what has been called the short century (1914—1989), at the end of a century of war and revolution
which changed civilizations, overthrew repressive governments, and left us with extraordinary opportunities and privilege, more than any generation before.
4 And yet what do we do? Do we revolt and rebel, like all students of generations before? Do we take to the streets and chant, "We're not leaving until we see change"? No, we do the opposite, we go to war, and we don't ask why, we give up our civil liberties, and we watch death and destruction on the evening news every day.
5 At college, we sign petitions, join organizations, sign up for mailing lists, wear our Live Strong bracelets, and watch Live Aid and Live Earth on the television—go to the concerts
even, if we can get the tickets. But what do we stand for? Like a true postmodern generation, we have no way to describe our political commitment, we have no inspirational characters, we have no philosophy, we have no direction or theme. We're only defined by what came before us, we're the generation of the Che Guevara T-shirt.
6 It's a movement which appears to encourage individuals to assert themselves collectively. It seems to be waiting for the revolution. And as young people, we're expected to be angry because that's what young people do.
7 But how do we rebel against our parents' generation which is nostalgic for revolution? How do we rebel against parents who sometimes want revolution more than we do? We don't. We rebel by not rebelling.
8 The real energy is not on the campus, it's on the Internet. It provides us with a developing opportunity to communicate ideas and frustrations. We don't do demonstrations any more, we go to chat rooms, instead of going onto the streets.
9 The American college as we used to know it is coming to an end. To my generation, radicalism is associated with al-Qaeda, not the Weathermen. "Campus takeover" sounds less like Berkeley 1968, more like Virginia Tech 2007. The resonance of the words belongs to another era and doesn't reflect the realities of today.
10 But the technological revolution is just as real and just as profound as the revolution of the 1960s—it's just not as
obvious. It's work in progress, but it's there. Perhaps when our parents stop pointing out everything they were and everything we're not, maybe they'll see that the
post-everything generation is speaking a language which makes sense. We're writing the revolution, and we're using our own words to do so.
Language points
1. The post-everything generation (Title)
Post- is a prefix meaning "after or later than". For example,
post-Cold War refers to the period after the unfriendly
relations that existed between the then Soviet Union and the
United States (1945–1990). Expressions formed with the prefix
in the passage include: post-colonialism, postmodern, postmodernism, post-industrial, post-baby boom, post-9/11. An irony in the title, The post-everything generation, is that it means after all these "posts": post-post.
2. "Been there, done that and yes, this IS the T-shirt." (Para 1)
This is a comment on T-shirt culture among students: Many students wear T-shirts with words or slogans as a way to proclaim where they have been (places like London, the Amazon Rainforest or the North Pole) or things that they have done (achievements like "I finished the London Marathon" or "I climbed the Great Wall"). However, this one makes an ironic comment on such slogans, with "Been there" (somewhere, anywhere or everywhere), "Done that" (done something, anything or everything), "and yes" (believe it or not, but I can confirm it), "this IS the T-shirt" (capitals to emphasize that this really is the T-shirt souvenir).
3. ? something clicked ? (Para 1)
If something clicks, it means that you suddenly understand it.
4. ? what has been called the short century (1914–1989) ? (Para 3)
This is a reference to the British Marxist historian Eric Hobsbawm's book, The Age of Extremes (1994) which describes the years 1914–1989 as "the short century" (1798–1914 was "the
long nineteenth century"). The short 20th century in this analysis includes the First World War, the Russian Revolution, the Great Depression and the collapse of the international economy, the Second World War, the period of decolonization, and the Cold War.
5. ? we're the generation of the Che Guevara T-shirt. (Para
5)
The Che Guevara T-shirt came from a photo taken in 1960 by Alberto Korba in Cuba. He called the photo "A heroic fighter, angry and sad". This was redesigned for a poster by Jim Fitzpatrick in the late 1960s and then made into a T-shirt design. Korba and Fitzpatrick deliberately did not copyright their work because they wanted the image to spread easily in a time of rebellion and revolution. The Che Guevara T-shirt image was popular because many people wanted change and it was variously interpreted: from anticapitalist to anti-war, from armed struggle and indigenous revolution to anti-globalization.
6. "Campus takeover" sounds less like Berkeley 1968 ? (Para 9)
In 1968 students in a number of university campuses in the US demonstrated against racism and the Vietnam War. They wanted to find a public voice through participation, so they protested in non-violent ways through "walk-outs" (leaving classes), "sit-ins" (sitting in buildings and refusing to leave), and "take-overs" (occupying buildings for days). Police eventually removed the students, in some cases with violence. The
"take-overs" shocked many Americans and led to some social changes.
7. It's work in progress, but it's there. (Para 10)
Work in progress means that something is developing or moving forward but it is not finished or completed yet. Here it means technological revolution is indeed in progress.
8. Perhaps when our parents stop pointing out everything they were and everything we're not ? (Para 10)
The writer believes that the previous generation of his parents who were students in the late 1960s or 1970s keep pointing out what they were in their time contrasted with what the present generation is not. That is, the parents were committed to revolution or change while their children are not.
College just isn't special any more1 "If you can remember anything about the 1960s, you weren't really there," so the saying goes. It may be true for those who spent their college years in a haze of marijuana smoke. But there is one thing everyone remembers about the 1960s: Going to college was the most exciting and stimulating experience of your life.
2 In the 1960s, California's colleges and universities had
transformed the state into the world's seventh largest economy. However, Berkeley, the University of California's main campus, was also well-known for its student demonstrations and strikes, and its atmosphere of political radicalism. When Ronald Reagan ran for office as governor of California in 1966, he asked if Californians would allow "a great university to be brought to its knees by a noisy, dissident minority". The liberals replied that it was the ability to tolerate noisy, dissident minorities which made universities great.
3 On university campuses in Europe, mass socialist or communist movements gave rise to increasingly violent clashes between the establishment and the college students, with their new and passionate commitment to freedom and justice. Much of the protest was about the Vietnam War. But in France, the students of the Sorbonne in Paris managed to form an alliance with the trade unions and to launch a general strike, which ultimately brought about the resignation of President de Gaulle.
4 It wasn't just the activism that characterized student life in the 1960s. Everywhere, going to college meant your first taste of real freedom, of late nights in the dorm or in the Junior Common Room, discussing the meaning of life. You used to have to go to college to read your first forbidden book, see your first indie film, or find someone who shared your passion for Jimi Hendrix or Lenny Bruce. It was a moment of unimaginable freedom, the most liberating in your life.
5 But where's the passion today? What's the matter with college? These days political, social and creative awakening
seems to happen not because of college, but in spite of it. Of course, it's true that higher education is still important. For example, in the UK, Prime Minister Blair was close to achieving his aim of getting 50 per cent of all under thirties into college by 2010 (even though a cynic would say that this was to keep them off the unemployment statistics). Yet college education is no longer a topic of great national importance. Today, college is seen as a kind of small town from which people are keen to escape. Some people drop out, but the most apathetic stay the course because it's too much effort to leave.
6 Instead of the heady atmosphere of freedom which students in the 1960s discovered, students today are much more serious. The British Council has recently done research into the factors which help international students decide where to study. In descending order these are: quality of courses, employability prospects, affordability, personal security issues, lifestyle, and accessibility. College has become a means to an end, an opportunity to increase one's chances on the employment market, and not an end in itself, which gives you the chance to imagine, just for a short while, that you can change the world.
7 The gap between childhood and college has shrunk, and so has the gap between college and the real world. One of the reasons may be financial. In an uncertain world, many children rely on their parents' support much longer than they used to. Students leaving university in the 21st century simply cannot afford to set up their own home because it's too expensive. Another possible reason is the communications revolution. Gone
are the days when a son or daughter rang home once or twice a term. Today students are umbilically linked to their parents by their cell phones. And as for finding like-minded friends to share a passion for obscure literature or music, well, we have the Internet and chat rooms to help us do that.
8 "Bliss was it in that dawn to be alive,
9 But to be young was very heaven!"
10 Wordsworth may have written these lines about the French Revolution, but they were also true for the students of the 1960s. So why aren't they true for the students of today?
Language points
1. "If you can remember anything about the 1960s, you weren't really there" ? (Para 1)
This saying makes a joking comment about these years: This was a time in the West when many young people took drugs (like cocaine, marijuana and LSD), so they were there and didn't really remember much of what happened (because of the drugs, they were "in a haze of marijuana smoke"). If someone does remember, they weren't really there—they must have been
somewhere else, without drugs.
2. In the 1960s, California's colleges and universities had transformed the state into the world's seventh largest economy. (Para 2)
The University of California sees itself as the link between education and the economy in California and has been recognized as a very significant factor for many years. The Californian economy includes Hollywood (entertainment), Los Angeles (tourism), the Central Valley (agriculture: California is the world's fifth largest supplier of food and agricultural products), Silicon Valley (computers, high technology) and wine production. Different tables (2002–2008) put California
as between the world's seventh to tenth largest economies, roughly that of Spain or Italy. This state is responsible for 13% of the US' gross domestic product (GDP) but it experienced a severe economic downturn in 2008. Still, industry and manufacturing related to Internet activities have been developing to balance agricultural output.
3. Today students are umbilically linked to their parents ? (Para 7)
Simply it means students are closely and tightly linked to their parents.
4. obscure literature or music (Para 7)
These are works which are not well–known or hardly known, and
perhaps difficult to understand. The writer is saying that in the 1960s students went to college to find friends with similar interests, tastes or opinions to discuss such works, but now in the communications revolution such discussions can be held electronically.
5. "Bliss was it in that dawn to be alive,
But to be young was very heaven!" (Paras 8–9)
The major English romantic poet, William Wordsworth (1770–1850) wrote these words about the early days (the "dawn") of the French Revolution. He had lived in France and was impressed by the Revolution but on his return to England he found that many people who had supported it changed their minds when they saw the massacres (killings) that happened later. These words try to catch the spirit of the enthusiasts: It was complete happiness ("bliss") to be alive in the Revolution, but to be young was even better. It was perfect, like in paradise ("very heaven").

Compared with over 100 days, exhausting school life, summer
holiday is definitely a golden time for relaxation entertainment. We can set aside the studies, lock away the textbooks, forget everything about school, greet the new life with our arms open up. During the two
months, loose, we enjoy ourselves thoroughly, sleeping till when the sun is high in the sky, playing computer night day, watching TV as long as we want to,traveling around like a tramp. Time rolls by,it is not until at the end of the holiday that we suddenly find our home assignment remaining blank sheets of paper. Then we go mad, devote the last days to fulfilling the homework.
The same summer holidays pass year after year, year after year, we regret when they come to an end. We regret having wasted so time on recreations, instead of our lessons, regret having worn away our 8tth in trifles.
Although it was still the case this summer, I dare say this was the
most fruitful holiday I had ever spent. Yes, the summer holiday I enjoyed most is this year,s.
At the very beginning of the holiday, our head teacher instructed us to make the most of the summer coming up,then turn ourselves into bookworms. I took heart on hearing it,at once mapped out a long list of hundreds of tasks I was going to perform. I was even in higher spirits in the first days of the summer, dreaming that I stuck to the whole schedule became a super girl the next semester. But my ambition didn,t stand the test of time. It was a few days later that my
attention was continually attracted by the Internet,
novels, shopping malls. Time flew surprisingly fast. When the vacation was already over, I realized in astonishment despair that I had acted on a half of my plan.
However, I am now consoling myself with the thought that it is human nature to have a rest after a long term,s study; hence it is
not realistic to keep working hard, even though the horrible Senior 3 was around the corner. Therefore, I am satisfied. I am satisfied with my daily routine in which I spent an average 9 hours in sleeping, 2 hours in eating, 2 hours in surfing the Internet, 6 hours in doing some trivial things which I couldn,t even remember, the other
5 hours in studying. After all, I have done my possible. What is more,
I did have a precious pause between the intense school days, seized the last
chance to relax in my senior life. So, this was a holiday combined with rest work, wasn,t it?

I hope what I learn in school will be helpful to my new job. After earning some money, I want to have an after-graduation trip that I have been dreaming of for a very long time. My first choice is Xiamen, which is an attractive city. When the trip ends, it’s time for the college.
