With the start of the new term students around the country exchange their fun and fashionable clothes for boring school uniforms.
“The uniform makes us look like a bunch of clones, especially when we are doing morning
exercises in the playground,” said Qing, a Senior 2 from a high school in Shanghai. “But we are not exactly the same from the top to the bottom. The boys wear different sport shoes and girls have different decorations in their hair. These are the areas where you can express yourself,” said Qing.
Although it might be strange for boys to talk about fashion, they do care about what they wear in school, especially shoes, according to Qing.
“Nike and Adidas basketball shoes, although they are still the must for many of my friends, are becoming out-of-date.” Qing added. He explained, “ Since Liu Xiang ran so fast in Athens, running shoes are becoming popular.”
“Still in fashion are the various baseball caps and American-style T-shirts with random
English words printed on them,” said Qing. “The accuracy of the written message isn’t important. Often, the words are misspelt. Sometimes they do not even make sense,” Qing said with a smile.
Besides sports shoes and T-shirts, styles and colors of school bags are another opportunity for students to express their taste in fashion. Some bags are made more eye-catching by decorating them with small hanging dolls. Other fashionable items are the colorful drink containers which are now popular among girls this term.
As in China, the new term in the US also brings new fashion trends: shirts printed with Chinese words, necklaces with Hebrew or Hindi characters, and Brazilian jewelry, are all common in schools in Florida, according to Carmen Domingues, a high school student.

HANGZHOU, China — Millions of Chinese basketball fans who were upset about the retirement of Yao Ming, are excited to see another even more shining star, Jeremy Lin, rising from the N.B.A and becoming a household name all across China.
“We are amazed by Lin Shuhao’s magic performance and should cheer him on,” one Internet user wrote.
“His sport shirts have sold out, even including the counterfeit(仿制品) ones,” said Zheng
Xiaojun, a 24-year-old clerk.
Lin’s amazing success over the last month has caught the imagination of the Chinese. He has been especially popular here in northern Zhejiang province, from which his grandmother went to Taiwan in the late 1940s.
Cai Qi, a well-known micro blogger, posted a message on micro blog over the weekend stating that Lin’s hometown is Jiaxing, a city near Hangzhou where Lin’s grandmother grew up.
Cai Qi’s nephew Yu Guohua, a 56-year-old factory worker, is Lin’s closest relative still
living in northern Zhejiang. He said in a telephone interview that Lin had come to play basketball with the Jiaxing High School team last May and had been surrounded by admirers.
Yu said he did not have a chance to meet Lin in the crowd, but managed to speak with his family. “His father was very supportive of Lin’s playing basketball, but his grandmother was not, for fear he would be injured,” Yu said.
Lin may owe his height, 6 feet 3 inches, to his grandmother’s family, Yu said. Chen Weiji,
the father of Lin’s grandmother, was well over 6 feet and all of Chen’s children were tall as well, he said.
The N.B.A. believes that 300 million people in China play basketball. The retirement last year of Yao Ming took its main Asian draw away from the N.B.A. But Lin’s appearance has helped
the league remain a hot topic of Chinese online chatter.

At first a balloon is flat. You could have it in your pocket or in the middle of a book and nobody would have any idea of what you are keeping. Sometimes you could hold it in your hands without anybody noticing what you have.
But the moment you blow air into it, it becomes impossible for you to put it in the middle of your book like you did earlier! Everybody around you begins to notice the balloon. They begin to pay attention to its color and its size.
This is how the life of a man is supposed to be. When you have an idea, it may first be in
your book or on a sheet of paper in your hands and isn’t seen by anybody. But when you start to blow creativity into your idea, people begin to see it. It also becomes impossible for you to hide the idea.
The idea attracts attention itself. Just like all the balloon needs to start receiving attention is consistent (持续的) air, all your idea needs is consistent creativity blown into it.
The balloon traps air inside to be able to exhibit its real size and at the same time it takes advantage of the air to move up. The breeze(微风) does not often favor the balloon but
the balloon still takes advantage of the breeze to dance in the air.
You may also be interested in the fact that the balloon lasts longer because of its flexibility. When it hits something, its direction changes. When you hit a hard rock, while sailing through life, don’t say it’s the end of the road. There’s a long way to travel beyond the rock.
When the balloon is pressed, it bends and flips (翻转) because of pressure. Learn to endure
(忍受). Use pressure to bend and flip to the next level.
47(How can you make your life successful according to the passage?
A(Blow air into the balloon constantly.
B(Keep your creative ideas from being known by the public.

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Everyone feels left out by friends once in a while, and sometimes friends fight and make up again. But sometimes kids form groups that they won’t let other kids belong to. 51 .
Not all groups of friends are cliques. The thing that makes a group a clique is that they leave some kids out on purpose. Usually one or two popular kids control who gets to be in the group and who gets left out . 52 . For instance, Zack, Trevor and Steve always played basketball after school, but Zack started pushing Trevor out of the group, and Steve admitted that.
Kids might form cliques late in elementary school or in middle school. Sometimes cliques are made up of kids who share an interest in something, like sports or music. 53 . Both boys
and girls have cliques, though people who study these groups say girl cliques are often meaner and more hurtful in the way they treat girls who aren’t in the group. 54 . Emotional hurt
is different to the kind of hurt you feel when you skin your knee, but it’s also a kind of pain and you can feel terrible. You might feel lonely if you’re alone at lunch or after school.
55 . They might help by letting kids know that it isn’t OK to treat others in this way, or by putting an end to the mean treatment.
A(A clique is a group of kids who hang out together and won’t let others join in.
B(If you are on the outside of a clique, it really hurts.
C(Members of a clique are often unfriendly to people who aren’t in the group.
(Kids may act much differently than they did before they were part of the clique. D
E(Parents and teachers can help when someone is being left out.
F(Sometimes the kids in them just want to be popular or want to belong.

There is a song that tells people they can’t always get what they want but if we try sometimes we can get what we need. The past years in my life my parents have told me this saying many times. I’ve always complained about the quote(引语). Although over time I have told myself to learn
from it.
This year my girlfriend flew off to college in West Palm, Florida. This has been a killer
for me because I haven’t been able to see her and she is having a rough time in school. The last two months have been hard but we are working through it. I have been trying to get my dad to buy me a plane ticket to go down there. My dad told me if I brought him some money he would help me pay for the ticket. I started to complain to him because I had no way of getting any money to give him. I spent several days and nights thinking of ways to earn money to go see my girlfriend. I finally came to the conclusion that I would get a job and work hard to earn some money to give to my dad. I applied to Safeway and I ended up getting the job.
I have been working at Safeway for about a month now and work hard to earn money to go see my girlfriend. The other day my mom had surprised me and told me that she asked her boss if she could use their business miles(旅费) to buy me a ticket down to Florida for two weeks. I was
very thankful and told her I would help pay for anything that I have to. The thought of me working hard and getting a job showed my mom that I really cared and was trying my best to be a successful person. I believe that you can’t always get what you want but if you try sometimes, you get what you need.

I was born in Korea , and my family came over to America when I was 10. I'm the middle of three girls ,and parents moved so we'd experience a different life .They did it for our education and to give us more of a chance than they had .We moved to Staten Island , and I went to the High School of Performing Arts in New York City . My parents were disappointed when I told them I wanted to be an actress . My father suggested I try pre-med (医学院预科) . But after they saw
me in plays they were really proud.
I graduated from Boston University and was doing theater in New York when I got cast (扮
演角色) in a Korean miniseries (电视连续短剧 ) . We started shooting (拍摄)the show in New
York , and then went to Korea to finish it up. They said I would be there for three weeks, but it ended up being two months. The miniseries took off,and over night, I became recognizable . It was sort of like Lost. It blew up. Then amazing projects were offered to me. I kept thinking ,"I'll do one more and then go back to the US." I ended up staying for seven years.
Some people described me as the Julia Roberts of Korea , which is a bad comparison because
she is the queen of romantic comedy. I became famous in Korea for a dramatic role in a film called Shiri . I played a "La Femme Nikita" type of role .I was the girl with the gun---- all action. 43(The writer's parents moved to America so as to _________.

It took me eighteen years to realize what an extraordinary influence my mother has been on my life. She’s the kind of person who has thoughtful discussions about which artist she would most want to have her portrait(肖像) painted by , the kind
of mother who always has time for her four children, and the kind of community leader who has a seat on the board of every major project to assist Washington’s poor citizens. Growing up with such a strong role model, I developed many of her enthusiasms. I not only came to love the excitement of learning simply for the sake(缘故) of knowing something new, but I also came to
understand the idea of giving back to the community in exchange(交换) for a new sense of life,
love,and spirit.
My mother’s enthusiasm for learning is most apparent in travel. I was nine years old when
my family visited Greece. Every night for three weeks before the trip, my older brother Peter and I sat with my mother on her bed reading Greek myths(神话) and taking notes on the Greek
Gods. Despite(尽管) the fact that we were traveling with fourteen-month-old twins, we managed to be at each ruin(遗迹) when the site opened at sunrise. Eight years and half a dozen passport stamps later I have come to value what I have learned on these journeys about global history, politics and culture, as well as my family and myself.
While the raw experiences I have had at home and abroad have been spectacular(壮观的), I
have learned to truly value them by watching my mother. She has enriched my life with her passion(热爱) for learning, and changed it with her devotion(贡献) to humanity(人类). In her endless
love of everything and everyone she is touched by, I have seen a hope and life that is truly exceptional(特殊的). Next year, I will find a new home miles away. However, my mother will always be by my side

C(didn't understand his mother
D(is sure to become a devotional person to society
50(Which is the most proper word to describe the writer's emotion towards his Mother ?
A(Grateful. B(Regretful . C(Proud . D(Pitiful .

第二节 书面表达
Dear Tom,
I’m glad to hear that you are to attend an interview next week. Here are some tips for you so as to leave a good first impression on the interviewer.
I suggest that you should turn up on time or 10 minutes earlier. Lateness is surely a way of killing off any chance of a good first impression. Next, you should look confident. Without confidence, nothing can be done. Confidence is usually regarded as the reflection of your skills.
Besides, the most powerful tool you have is your smile, so don’t forget to use it. When you smile at someone, he/she will smile back and you will feel relaxed. In addition, you’d better focus your attention on the interviewer’s talk and be a good listener. Don’t speak too much, or you will make some mistakes without knowing them.
Best wishes!

Many in the education field today are looking for evidence to support the case for homework, but are coming up empty-handed. “Homework is all pain and no gain,” says author Alfie Kohn. In his book The Home w ork Myth, Kohn points out that no study has ever found a relation between homework and academic achievement in elementary school. “In fact, it may even diminish interest in learning,” says Kohn.
Many proponents argue that life is filled with things we don't like to do, and that homework teaches self-discipline, time management and other nonacademic life skills. Kohn challenges this popular notion: If kids have no choice in the matter of homework, they're not really exercising judgment, and are instead losing their sense of freedom.
At the Kino School, Cera says children often choose to take their favorite parts of school home. “A lot of what we see kids doing is continuing to write in journals, practising music with their friends, and taking experiments home to show their parents ,” she says. Anecdotal information from Kino graduates suggests that the early control over their education continues to serve them well into college; they feel better equipped to manage their time and approach professors with questions.
“One of the reasons that we continue to give out mountains of homework,” Kohn says, “is our obsession with standardized tests. ” This concern is especially relevant with the latest Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) results placing American students 25th in math and 21st in science. “They make our students do more mindless worksheets at earlier ages so
that we can score higher in international assessments,” Kohn says. “It's not about learning. It's about winning.”
“Even if we can agree on the importance of kids doing better in tests like PISA,” Kohn says, “there is no research to suggest that homework is our ticket to success. A recent comparative study of kids in China, Japan and two U.S. cities shows there is no connection between time spent on studying and academic achievement.”
So, what's the solution? The National Parent Teacher Association suggests children in kindergarten through second grade should do homework for no more than 10-20 minutes a day, and for third through sixth graders the limit is 30 -60 minutes a day. Many parents will be delighted if teachers reduce the amount of homework that their children are getting, but Kohn says the quality of those assignments needs to be addressed as well. “Some_of_this_stuff_isn't_worth_two_minutes_of_their_children's_time,” he says.
( )58. We can learn from The Homework Myth that homework
A. may have a bad effect on the students B. helps the students to follow the lessons
C. can make a difference in students' success D. pushes students to manage their time properly
( )59. According to Cera, the students at the Kino School
A. do better in their lessons than others B. have to do much homework every day
C. are especially good at writing and singing D. share interesting school things with parents
( )60. By saying “Some of this stuff isn't worth two minutes of their children's time”, Kohn means that ________.
A. the total amount of homework should be limited
B. some of the students' homework is of low quality
C. the students shouldn't spend too much time on homework
D. the time spent on homework should be based on its difficulty

Warming oceans will cause big changes in the biodiversity of sea life. That is a finding from the largest study ever of marine plants and animals. The study found that some sea creatures will expand into new areas. But other creatures, especially in warmer waters, are likely to die out.
The study was done at the University of Queensland in Australia. It examined nearly 13,000 plant and animal species across the Earth's oceans. Scientists used a model that looked at temperature changes at the sea surface. They then compared that information with what kind of climate and environment is best for the different marine species.
The study found that warmer ocean climates will suffer species loss. But creatures in colder climates will be able to survive by expanding their territory. for Coral Reef Studies at Australia's University of Queensland. “We found in our analysis that projected climate change is going to result in a lot more mixing of species and a lot more sameness of diversity throughout the world's oceans.” The study lists these changes through the year 2100.
Mr. Pandolfi says that sameness in the ocean is problematic(产生问题的), as researchers consider new ways to meet the food demands of a growing human population. “It could be that when species that were very abundant in the past and are good at tracking environments invade(侵入) a new ecosystem or a new geographic region they are not the ‘top dogs’ anymore or they may
not be able to reproduce as effectively as they used to.”
John Pandolfi warns the new combinations of marine species will present a major test for efforts to protect sea creatures. “And that's something that isn't easy for people to understand, because, they think, ‘I'm going to set up a marine park here so I can make sure that these organisms are preserved through decades or centuries. ’ But in fact, with climate change, those communities are going to change. They are going to be dynamic. They are not going to be unchangeable entities(实体) .” In the warmer ocean climates, plant and animal species will cross into new territories. Mr. Pandolfi says the study demonstrates the importance of cooperation among nations to fight climate change and the possible loss of biodiversity.
The findings were published in the journal “Nature Climate Change”.
( )61. What does John Pandolfi mean when he says “That is not always a good thing” ?
A. A large number of marine plants and animals will expand their territory.
B. Marine species will have a tendency to move to waters in colder climates.
C. The study done by the University of Queensland hasn't collected enough samples.
D. Climate change will cause oceans more mixing of species and more sameness of diversity.
( )62. It can be inferred that sameness in the ocean will result in
A. climate change B. fewer and fewer plants
C. food shortage D. a growing human population
( )63. Which of the following is true according to the last but one paragraph?
A. Many nations have cooperated to fight the possible loss of biodiversity.
B. John Pandolfi has established a marine park to preserve organisms.
C. People know well the reason why we should protect sea creatures.
D. Sea creatures will become unsteady with climate change.
( )64. What's mainly talked about in the passage?
A. Effective ways to preserve the biodiversity of sea life.
B. Climate change's influence on the biodiversity of sea life.
C. Research on how the global climate has changed these years.
D. The importance of protecting sea creatures for humans' sake.

Summers were once defined by road trips across the country. For most students, there were summer jobs, of course—by the pool, behind the cash counter, at the camp—but they were a means to an end, a way to fund the summer fun.
Not any more.
Today, summers are prime time for different reasons, and “missing out ” refers to lost opportunities of resume -padding placements and intense networking sessions. Students are expected to be making productive use of those vacant months, by all means necessary, and not just for fun.
Internships(实习) and other professional work experience during university have become essential to get a job right out of school, and while a soul -searching backpacking trip still has important merits, it won't provide the skills that match keyword -activated screening systems or concrete examples of work projects for interviews.
“Take the United Nations as an example,” said Catherine Stace, a career adviser at McGill University. “They have an algorithm that checks how many months of work experience someone
has. A four-month-long internship is calculated as two months of work experience. They'll evaluate the candidate like this beforehand, and you're not being considered if your working time doesn't add up.”
Student applicants with previous work experience show that they are achievers eager to get ahead, an important indication for recruiters(招聘人员). They are also more familiar with organizational processes and dynamics, which for employers translates into assurance on how they'll perform to workplace expectations.
In a competitive job market where good academics and extra-curricular activities are a given, work experience also lends itself particularly well as a measuring standard of cut-offs, and large organizations that receive high numbers of qualified applications aren't afraid to use it as such.
“From an employer's perspective, on paper everyone looks more or less like clones of each other. They all have similar degrees from similar schools ,” said Lauren Friese, founder of TalentEgg. ca, a job platform connecting students and employers. “So the recruiters want someone they can most easily picture in the role, and that's where having relevant work experience comes in. ”
Across the board, employers are showing their preference for students with work experience. In a 2013 survey conducted by the Canadian Association of Career Educators and Employers (CACEE), the most valued measuring criteria for new positions was work -integrated learning, which includes internships, co-ops and workplace experiences.
In 2014, an American research project sent out theoretical resumes that included or excluded internship experiences, and found that having work experience gave students a 14 per cent higher chance of getting an interview even three years after the student supposedly graduated. The research authors estimate that the effect would be even greater immediately after graduation—and that's not taking into account students who get hired by the firms they interned for.
“Employers are not overly concerned about how students get the experience. It could be a summer job, co -op, or internship, but what they do value is the fact that people have had that experience in the workplace,” said Paul Smith, executive director of CACEE.
That's why so many large companies intend their internship programs to feed directly into entry -level positions.
At RBC, “there is a strong focus on converting(转变) interns into full-time employees,” said Lisa Kramer, director of talent acquisition. “Our converts rose by 20 per cent last year.” And the same tradition holds at PepsiCo Foods Canada: “In a perfect world, all of our new grads would have completed internships with us first,” said Dave Moncur, vice president of human resources.
All of this explains why so many students are willing to work full-time hours for free, getting ( )65. In the past, which was seldom done by college students on summer vacation?

A. have a good command of communication skills
B. are more easy to adapt to work conditions

Our planet is comprised mainly of water. Water ecosystems cover more than two-thirds of the Earth's surface. All life on the Earth relies on water to survive. Yet water pollution is a very real threat to our survival. It's considered the world's biggest health risk, threatening not only humans, but also plants and animals.
When we think about the causes of water pollution, we have to think about the two different sources of water on our planet. First, there's surface water—that's the water that we see in oceans, rivers, lakes, and ponds. This water is home to all living species that rely not only on the quantity but also the quality of the water to survive. No less important is groundwater. This water source feeds our rivers and oceans and forms much of the world's supply of drinking water. Both of these water sources are critical to life on the Earth. And both can become polluted in different ways.
Bodies of water can become polluted in a number of ways. Point source pollution refers to pollutants that enter a waterway by way of a single, identifiable source —such as a waste water treatment pipe or a factory chimney. Non-point source pollution is when the pollution is coming from many different locations. And its example is the nitrogen(氮) runoff that leaches into(渗入) waterways through nearby agricultural fields.
Groundwater can also be affected by point and non-point source pollution. A Chemical spill can go directly into the ground, polluting the water below. But more often than not, groundwater becomes polluted when non-point sources of pollution such as agricultural runoff or medicines find their way into the water within the Earth.
If you don't live near water, you may not think that you are affected by pollution in the world's waters. But water pollution affects every single living thing on this planet. From the tiniest plant to the largest mammal and yes, even humans in between, we all rely on water to survive. Fish living in polluted waters become polluted themselves. Fishing is already forbidden in many of the world's waterways due to pollutants. When a waterway becomes polluted —either with trash or with toxins —it reduces its capacity to support life. Water is a very fluid thing. It flows throughout the
world without regard to borders. It crosses state lines and flows between countries. That means that pollution caused in one part of the world could affect a community in another. This makes it difficult to force anyone to set a standard of the ways we use and protect the world's water.
There are a number of international laws that aim to prevent dangerous levels of water pollution. The best things that you can do to prevent water pollution are to educate yourself about the world's water supply and support conservation projects both locally and around the world. Water is the world's most vital resource. It belongs to all of us and it's up to everyone to do their part to protect it.

The Qingming Festival or Tomb Sweeping Day that falls in April is a traditional holiday dating back to the ancient China. It sees a combination of sadness and happiness.
It is the most important day of sacrifice. Both the Han and minority ethnic groups at this time offer sacrifices to their ancestors and sweep the tombs of the dead. During the Qingming Festival,
all cemeteries(墓地) are crowded with people who come to sweep tombs and offer sacrifices. Traffic on the way to the cemeteries becomes extremely jammed. The customs have been greatly simplified today. After slightly sweeping the tombs. people offer food, flowers and favorites of the dead, then burn incense(香) and paper money and bow before the memorial tablet.
In contrast to the sadness of the tomb sweeper, people also go outside and enjoy the greenery of springtime on this day. The Qingming Festival is a time when the sun shines brightly, the trees and grass become green and nature is again lively. Since ancient times, people have followed the custom of spring outings. At this time tourists are everywhere.
People love to fly kites during the Qingming Festival. A string of little lanterns tied onto the kite or the thread look like shine stars, and therefore, are called “God's lanterns”.
