北京人的重要发掘者、著名专家贾兰坡曾经这样描写过一群北京人的一天生活：“早晨，红日东升，秋风送爽，一群北京人由岩洞里走了出来，他们中间有老有小、有男有女。
虽然已是深秋了，但是天气还不怎么冷，只是由于昨晚落了一场雨，稍稍感到一些寒意。
他们身上什么都不穿，连一条兽皮也不披。
他们的相貌是怪模怪样的。
你说他们象人，可是他们的前额很低，发际向前，眉骨粗大，嘴巴前突，鼻子扁平，再加上头部多少有些向前微倾，又有些象猿，特别是他们身上那层松软的细毛……你说他们是猿，可是他们直立行走，特别是他们的一举一动，是任何动物所不能做到的，又可断定他们是人。
走出洞口，围拢在一堆火的旁边。
洞口附近的地面被踏的很坚实，连杂草都不生；可是地面上是乱七八糟，遍地堆积着乱柴和吃剩下的兽骨。
在这一群人的中间，有人在说什么，话说得直忡忡的，又怕别人听不懂，还一边用手比划着。
虽然他们说话的内容，我们无从知道，但由他们的表情上可以看出，大概是在商量这一天的工作吧。
说真的，能够吃饱肚子，对他们来说该是多么重要的事情呀！大家出发了，洞里只留下了少数几个上了年岁的人。

洞内、洞外以及洞口都有火堆。
为了避免烟熏，洞里的火总是摆在靠近“天窗“的地方。
在不使用的时候，就在火上盖些干柴，再铺上一层土。
洞外的火为了防止雨浸，在临睡以前，还加上树叶，盖上土，使在火阴燃；只有当他们用火的时候，才把它扒开，吹燃起火苗。
他们成年累月的像保护自己眼珠一样保护着火种。
他们懂得，如果火灭了，会给他们带来什么样的灾难！洞口的火，不仅是为了烤东西吃，也拿它作为防御猛兽的“工具”。
因为洞口只要有火燃着，不管多么凶猛的野兽，见了火就得避开。
最初他们占据这个岩洞的时候，还是用火把豺狼吓跑的呢！ 一条小河恰恰经过他们居住的洞口，为他们制造石头工具提供了非常丰富的原料。
孩子们一趟一趟地运着由河滩上选来地石头；大人们不停地把石头敲开，制作他们所需要地各种工具。
还有人在修理一条木棒，砍了又砍，刮了又刮，还不时拿起来试一试，看看这种最得力狩猎武器做地合适不。
留在家里地人也并不轻松，除了看小孩、管火种外，他们还是制造工具的能手呢！ …… 在龙骨山南面二三公里地草原上，七八个年轻地小伙子，手持木棒正在追赶着一支生长着象“手掌”那样的大犄角的肿骨鹿。
鹿一直向西奔跑着，跑到山脚下的河边，看样子是打算越过河向山坡上逃去。
可是预先埋伏在对岸的几个人突然挺起身来，堵住了鹿的去路。
鹿惊慌万状，又想往回跑，可是已经来不及了，这群小伙子就像饿虎扑食般地扑上来，一齐举起木棒狠狠地朝着鹿地身上打下去。
起初，鹿还想挣扎一下，可是一棒正打在它的致命处，鹿一动也不动了。
多么幸运啊！晚上大家可以饱餐一顿了。
可是像这样顺利地日子，并不是很多地。
有的时候，简直没有什么捕获，只好采集一些植物根子，或者捡回虎、豹吃剩下的羚羊肉来充饥。
在龙骨山东面约二公里的紧靠平原的山坡上，有一群北京人正在采集食物。
其中大多数是妇女，也有较大的孩子。
年岁大一些的人，还经常把采集的经验传给孩子们，教给他们辨别各种植物的方法，哪一种是能吃的。
哪一种又是最可口；有的人还很自然地把采到地东西送到孩子们地口里，叫他们尝尝滋味。
手中的骨棒或木棒用处真不小，不仅可以用它来挖取块根，还经常用它扒鼠洞。

他们为饱肚子，就得经常在外面采集各种能吃的东西。
采集是他们生活资料的主要来源。
虽然也有人在外面从事狩猎，但凭着那样简陋的武器——木棒或石块，不能经常获得很多东西。
