阅读下列短文,从每题所给的 A 、 B 、 C 、 D 四个中,选最佳选 项,
A 篇
After finishing my teaching for a school year. I thought that I should go back to Montreal , Quebec, my hometown for a visit. My main goal was to relax in preparation for the challenges of my retirement in the coming year. Through my stay in Montreal, I met lots of Chinese who are struggling to succeed and then lead a better life in Canada.
Some travelled thousands of miles to get knowledge. When I spoke with some of them about the major barrier they had to face after they arrived in Canada, they all talked about the two official languages of Canada. But I was impressed by their ability to express their ideas while switching between English and French.
Almost all of those people said they often felt homesick. They miss their families and friends. Though Montreal ha lots of Chinese restaurants, they
long for a home-cooked meal.
I met some tourists who were trying to realize their childhood dreams of experiencing the life in a developed country. When I asked them if Montreal had lived up to their expectations, they hesitated. They said that reality never agrees with fantasies. However, they were glad to have the opportunity to visit Montreal and didn’t regret taking the trip.
Not all the Chinese people I met were happy. I once met a young lady who met with a gentleman through the Internet. However, to her disappointment, he disappeared after he promised to marry he promised to marry her in Montreal.
I was served by another Chinese person who could not handle the challenges of studying in an English environment and ended up working in a restaurant with minimum pay.
Exploring different parts of the world, without any doubt, is an enriching experience. However, one should be realistic when it comes to leaving his hometown to set up a new life in a foreign country. One should take the time to examine the advantages and the shortcomings of the venture before they decide to chase an uncertain dream od achieving success or leading a better life.

Have you ever lost your car on a parking lot? You don’t have a clue where your car is after shopping. Then you start walking around clicking on your car keys so the alarm goes off. It can be annoying, especially on a hot sunny day.
No, you needn’ t to install (安装 ) an expensive GPS system to keep track of your car. That’ s too expensive. You would need to pay a monthly
fee to use it.
But is there a way to track your vehicle without spending a fortune? Yes, now there is! A California-based company has created a tiny device that works with your smartphone, which could be exactly what you’re looking for.
What is it ?
It’s called TrackR. It is a state-of-the-art tracking device the size of a coin. It’s changing the way we keep track of the important things in our life.
How does it work?
It’s easy! Install the free TrackR app on your smartphone, connect the app to your device and you’re ready to go! Simply attach TrackR to whatever you want to keep an eye on. The entire process of setting it up only takes 5 minutes or less.
You can attach it to your keys, briefcase, wallet, your latest tech gadgets and anything else you don’t want to lose. Then use the TrackR app to locate your missing item in seconds.
If you forget where you have parked your car, pull out smartphone and open the TrackR app. Tap on the “find device” button on the screen and the app will tell you the exact spot of the last known location of the TrackR.
What else can I do with TrackR?
The device is small and unnoticeable enough that you can attach it to your pet. Put it on their collar, and the issue of searching for them when they run away to nearby places will be over! You’ll never waste a minute searching the whole house for it.
TrackR even comes with a double-sided glue so you can stick it to your laptop or under your bike seat.Track down and punish the thieves who steal your expensive things!
How much does it cost?
You are probably thinking that this device is very expensive. False! TrackR only costs $29! That’s a small price to pay for peace of mind, isn’t it?
Where can l buy one ?
You can buy it directly from the company’s website by clicking http://buy.the trackr.co/gu/special-offers/15/.

Old Fossil
Scientists have found what they think is probably the oldest fossil on
Earth, a remnant of life from 3.7 billion years ago when Earth's skies were
orange and its oceans green.
In an newly melted part of Greenland, Australian scientists found the leftover structure from a community of microbes(微生物) that lived on an ancient seafloor. Based on their analysis of the fossils, the researchers determined that they are 220 million years older than those discovered in Western Australia, which were 3.48 billion years old. The discovery shows life may have formed quicker and more easily
than once thought, about half a billion years after Earth formed. And that
may also give hope for life forming elsewhere, such as Mars, said study
co-author Martin VanKranendonk of the University of New South Wales
and director of the Australian Center for Astrobiology.
how our planet evolved and how life gained a foothold,
said.
Scientists had thought it would take at least half a billion years for life
to form after the molten Earth started to cool a bit, but this shows it could
have happened quicker, he said. That's because the newly found fossil is far
too complex to have developed soon after the planet's first life forms, he
said.
In an outcrop of rocks that used to be covered with ice and snow which
melted after an exceptionally warm spring, the Australian team found stromatolites (叠层石) , which are layered structures that are often
produced by a community of microbes. The stromatolites were about 1 to 4
centimeters high.
tiny zircon(锆石) with uranium and estimated that they date back to 3.7
billion years ago.
The dating seems about right, said Abigail Allwood, a NASA astrobiologist who found the previous oldest fossil, from 3.48 billion years
ago, in Australia. But Allwood said she is not completely convinced that
what Vankranendonk's team found once was alive. She said the evidence
wasn't conclusive enough that it was life and not a geologic quirk(地质巧

When taking an Uber— Should you tip or not
Taking an Uber car may no longer be a direct driver-passenger and guilt-free experience. The ride-sharing experience is about to get awkward. With the wide application of the Internet, Uber , a new approach to your destination instead of taking an ordinary taxi , has become more popular recently .However, benefits won’t come without its fair share of drawbacks.
Uber drivers are a part of the so-called sharing economy: They use their own vehicles, receive customer reviews via the app’s five -star rating system and make their own hours. unlike other services, Uber claimed that drivers all over the country could clearly alert customers that tipping is not included. Those drivers that expect to be tipped can make their wishes known. But the company is holding to its official no-tip-required line, according to its website. “once you arrive at your destination, your fare is automatically charged to your credit card on file— There ’ s no need to tip.” Although drivers value their independence —— the freedom to push a button rather than punch a clock , lack of a clear policy ,however , leaves Uber drivers in a vulnerable(脆
But has the company done a good job working with customers? Some observers say that this new grey area for tipping will create awkwardness about whether they should tip or not ----something most Uber customers have not had to deal with until now. Uber did not respond to customers’ comment, just leaving their rating in the air.
Providing an option to tip on an app sends a clear message to customers to
reach into their pockets. Nearly 30% people would be more likely to leave a tip if they were presented with a “no tip” button, according to Guinn’s 2015 survey of roughly 500 people. When people are presented with three tip choices -----20%, 25% or 30% ----they’re more likely to choose the middle option even if it’s more than the traditional 20%, according to a separate 2014 analysis of 13 million New York City taxi rides.
If the service is twice as expensive during a rain storm or public transport delay, the customer has the right not to tip. However, if the driver is extra helpful or avoids traffic to reach your destination in a more timely manner, you could give an extra tip, says Uber , who will leave tipping options in the hands of the consumer rather than the app .
67. Compared with taxi drivers, Uber drivers ______.
A. enjoy more freedom and choices
B. support the company’s practice
C. clock up the miles while driving
D. receive customers reviews directly
68. The underlined word “deactivated’ in paragraph 4 probably means ____.
A. removed B. degraded C. tracked D. charged 69. From the survey we can conclude most customers________.
A. would probably tip if there is an option
B. usually do as the “no tip” sign suggests
C. tip because of Uber drivers’ good service
D. are disappointed to reach into their pockets
70. What causes the awkwardness between Uber drivers and their customers ?
A. Customers take advantage of the new grey area for tipping .
B. There is no specific policy from the Uber to follow.
C. It’s up to customers to decide the drivers’ earnings
D. customers tend to pay least among the 3 choices.

Giant Panda Is No Longer Endangered
A leading international group has taken the giant panda off its endangered list thanks to decades of conservation efforts, but China’s government is unwilling to accept the change, saying it did not view the status of the country’s beloved symbol as any less serious.
The International Union for Conservation of “endangered” species, reflecting its growing numbers in the wild in southern China. 71 That is the result of work by Chinese agencies to carry out hunting bans and expand forest reserves.
In a statement, China’s State Forestry Administration said that it doubted
the classification change because pandas’ natural habitats have been mainly separated by human causes. The animals live in small, isolated groups of as few as 10 pandas that struggle to reproduce and face the risk of disappearing altogether. If we relax our conservation work, the populations and habitats of giant pandas would still suffer a great loss. 72 Therefore, we ’ re not being alarmist (危言耸听的 ) by continuing to emphasize the panda species’ endangered status.
73 John Howard, a senior official at World Society for the Protection of Animals, expressed his satisfaction over the effective measures taken by the Chinese government. The Chinese government and the World Wild Fund (WWF) first established the Wolong National Nature Reserve in Sichuan province in 1980. Wild panda numbers have since slowly rebounded as China cracked down on the skin trade. 74
Over the last few decades, international groups and the Chinese government have worked to save wild pandas and breed them in face of their extinction. It is not surprising that the WWF, whose logo has been a panda since 1961, celebrated the panda’s re-classification. 75
A. As a result, our achievements would be quickly lost.
B. The wild panda population jump to 1,864 in 2014 from 1,596 in 2004.
C. Still, other animal protection organizations praised the recovery of the pandas.
D. Panda has long been a symbol of China and the global conservation movement.
E. And China gradually expanded its protected forest areas to cover 1.4 million hectares now.
F. Some pandas have been sent to zoos around the world as a gesture of Chinese diplomatic goodwill.
G . It says that aggressive investment does pay off when science, political will and engagement come together.

On August 21st, I was working on my homework, a composition titled “My Hero/Heroine”. I was stuck at the very beginning, trying to figure out who my hero/heroine would be. Half an hour passed, yet I still could not come up with any idea.
Attracted by the cheers from the living room, I opened the door only to find they were watching the volleyball match of women’s final. Then I decided to take a break and joined them. The sense of excitement and nervousness were overwhelming as the score was quite close between China and its opponent.
To our greatest delight, the Chinese Women’s Volleyball Team won in the end and became the champion in the Olympic Games! The moment they stood on the podium with our national flag held in front of them, we couldn’t help feeling proud as Chinese!
Right then, I was inspired. The volleyball players had trained so hard before the Olympics and fought till the last minute. With no doubt, they are not only my heroines, but the heroines of China! I rushed to my desk and started to write my composition.

She was walking home from work one evening when she got tie idea. Rosa didn’t like her job at the factory , but it was better than no job at all. so, while she was trying not co think about work, she saw the pots in an alley. They were cheap plastic pots, but there were dozens of them piled up behind the flower shop. Such a waste, she thought. A large body of research has been developed in recent years to explain many aspects of willpower. Most of the researchers exploring self-control do so with an obvious goal. in mind: How can willpower be strengthened? If willpower is truly a limited resource, as the research suggests, what can be done to make it stay strong?
Avoiding temptation(诱惑 ) is an effective method for maintaining self-control, which is called the“ out of sight, out of mind” principle. One recent study, for instance, found office workers are less attracted to candy in the desk drawer than that on top of their desks, in plain sight.
The research suggesting that we possess a limited reservoir of self-control raises a troubling question. When we face too many temptations, are we to fail? Not necessarily. Researchers don’ t believe that one’ s willpower is ever completely exhausted. Rather, people appear to hold some willpower in reserve, saved far , allowing us to carry on even when our self-control strength has been run dawn. High motivation might help overcome weakened willpower一 at least to a point.
Willpower may also be made less vulnerable(脆弱 )to being exhausted in the first place. Researchers who study self-control often describe it as being like a muscle that gets tired with heavy use. But there is another aspect to the muscle comparison, they say. While muscles become exhausted by exercise in the short term , they are strengthened by regular exercise in the long term. Similarly, regular practices of self-control may improve willpower strength.
The evidence from willpower-exhaustion studies also suggests that making a list of resolutions on New. Year ’ s Eve is the worst possible approach. Being exhausted in one area can reduce willpower in other areas, so it makes more sense to focus on a single goal at a time. In other words, don ’ t try to quit smoking, adopt a healthy diet and start a new exercise plan at the same time. Taking goals one by one is a better approach. Once a good habit is in place, Baumeister says, you ’ ll no longer need to draw on your willpower to maintain the behavior. Eventually healthy habits will become routine, and won’ t require making decisions at all. Many questions about the nature of self-control remain to be answered by further research. Yet it seems likely that with clear goals, goad self-monitoring and a little practice, you can train your willpower to stay strong in the face of temptation.
63 .From the studies in the passage we learn that_______.
A .people have unlimited self-control.
B .high motivation ensures one’s success
C .willpower is hardly completely exhausted
D .too many temptations often lead to failure
64 .The underlined phrase “tap into” in Paragraph 3 most probably means_______.
A .made use of B .ran out of C .build D. increase
65. The author compares self-control to muscles_______.
A .to prove the long-term effects of willpower
B .to show the significance of regular exercise
C .to argue that self-control can be easily used up
D .to explain the benefits of practicing self-control
66. To develop a good habit, which of the following does the author prefer?
A. “I will give up dessert arid do exercise.”
B. “I wild set three goals this new semester.”
C. “I will keep myself from any temptation.”
D. “I will read an English nove1 every month.”

The aggressive spread of market economics and communication technologies-often under the control of western multinational companies-----brings new challenges to local cultures and values in non-Western societies. Sometimes it seems as if a tidal wave of the worst Western culture is creeping across the globe like a giant strawberry milkshake spill out and over the planet, with a flavor that is distinctly sweet, sickly and apparently homogeneous(同质的 ).
For some, especially the young, change may mean escape from oppressive traditions. It may also bring new opportunities for cultures to be combined in creative ways. However, there is genuine cause
for concen about the rate at which cultures are being worn away in such a globalized world.
Perhaps by far the most important far------reaching effect of cultural globalization is the commercialization of culture , which has a disturbing impact on local people ’ s existing values. They are increasingly bombarded with new images, new music, new clothes and new values. The familiar and old are to be abandoned. While there was cultural change long before globalization, there is a danger that much will be lost simply because it is not valued by global markets. In West Africa for example, traditional values have been overtaken by Coca-Cola culture which the local people don ’ t yet have the values to deal with successfully.
Another common aspect of the globalized culture is that it pursues(追求 )the same
Such gradual aggression against people’ s existing values and cultures has a destructive impact on their sense of who they are, what they want and what they respect. It attacks spiritual values and faith traditions. The accumulative(累积的 ) effect in non-Western societies is a crisis of cultural confidence, combined with the increased economic uncertainty and crime which global irrtegration(一
In conclusion, cultural globalization, or worldwide McDonaldization, destroys diversity and displaces the opportunity to sustain decent life through a mixture of many different cultures. It is more a consequence of power concentration in the global media and m anufacturing companies than the people’s own wish to abandon their cultural identity and diversity.
67. It can be learned from Paragraph 1 that
A. non-Western societies willingly accept economic globalization
B. Western culture unites the world’s economies and technologies
C. the booming of Western culture destroys non一 Western societies
D. despise its appeal, westernization shows an unpleasant uniformity
68 .Which best serves as an example of the“ one size fits all” principle in non-Western nations?
A .McDonald receives more criticism abroad than at home.
B .Many Africans dream of a middle class American lifestyle.
C .Chinese food wins great approval in the United Kingdom.
D .Some western young people fancy a visit to African countries.
69. What is the writer's altitude towards cultural globalization?
A. Cautious. B. Critical. C. Positive. D. Neutral.
70. The passage is mainly about______.
A. cultural diversity in globalization B. challenges to non-Western cultures
C .drawbacks of cultural globalization D. disappearance of non-Western cultures

It activates when we respond to heat, pressure , pain , or the use of a given finger. Studying brain scans, researchers discovered that when students aged 8 to 13 work on subtraction(减法 ) equations, this region“ lights up” on the scans, even if the students aren’ t using their fingers. The more complex the problem , the more activities are detected.
The connection between finger use and math ability has been shown on old-fashioned math tests as well. With their eyes closed , first graders were asked to identify which of their fingers a researcher was touching, When college students were given the same quiz, the highest scores once again performed best on calculation tests.
So what does all this mean? For one thing, parents and teachers shouldn ’ t discourage children from counting on their fingers. Memorizing the multiplication tables may help, but it is not the best option.“I would like to see interesting and creature representations of ideas.” says Jo Boaler, a professor of math education.
Recently , a series of activities have been designed to strengthen students’ perception of their fingers. Maybe in the near future, there will be only two no-no’ s regarding the use of fingers.
A. The first two laws of fingers are as true as ever.
B. There is a section of the brain, called the somatosensory forger area.
C. Researchers also stress that students simply learn better using visual tools.
D. Researchers are unimpressed by those students who finish quickly as well.
E. In fact, experts believe the brain is able to “see” a representation of our fingers.
F. That may sound simplistic, but the researchers offer an interesting explanation.
G. Researchers found those scoring highest on the finger-ID questions scored higher on a math test.

Dear Jim,
Knowing that you are interested in Chinese literature, I am more than excited because I am fairly a literature lover myself.
I recommend a well-known Chinese book titled The Ordinary World to you. The book was written by a famous Chinese writer, Lu Yao. It centers on the life and destinies of three families of Sun, Tian and Jin in a village. It pictures the tough process of building up a better and wealthier life during the very beginning of reform and openness in China. Reading the book, you will be greatly affected by the courage and spirit of the main characters. That’s why I make this recommendation.
I am looking forward to your view of this book.
Yours,
Li Hua
