TPO 23 Sample Answer
The reading and listening materials have a debate on why yellow cedars are in decline. The passage puts forward three hypotheses to explain this phenomenon, which are contradicted by the lecture.
First, the writer suggests that insect parasites are the culprit of the lessening population of the yellow cedars by raising the example of cedar bark beetles. However, the speaker says that this explanation does not hold water, for the reason that healthy yellow cedar is more resistant to cedar bark beetles because of powerful poisonous chemicals. For those dead yellow cedars with the infection of the insects, they may be already damaged. As a result, insect parasite is not responsible.
The second hypothesis the writer comes up with is that brown bears feed on yellow cedar bark, which gives rise to the decline. However, the speaker does not think so. In fact, across the northwestern coast of North America, the total number of yellow cedars has been dropping, both on the mainland and on the islands just off the coast. There are no bears on the islands, yet the cedars on islands are still in decline. So bear should not be to blame.
The third theory offered by the writer is that the frozen root damage caused by climate change should take the responsibility for the diminishing population of the yellow cedars. However, the speaker believes that this explanation does not bear much analysis. According to the speaker, more trees are dying in the relatively warmer lower elevations than in the higher elevations. Since the weather in lower elevations tends to be warmer, the frozen root theory is unlikely to hold water.
关于备考材料,建议大家按照OG、TPO(TOEFL Practice Online)、其他各种辅导书籍的顺序来做。

TPO1The lecturer claims that the new policy, which allows people to work four days a week instead of five, will bring side effects to both the companies and the society. This does not agree with the reading passage, which suggests that such a policy would be beneficial. To begin with, according to the lecture, a company that allows employees to have fewer working hours is likely to hire more people to ensure their normal productivity. As a result, expenses for training and medical insurance will inevitably rise. The reading passage, by contrast, suggests that employees who enjoy more leisure time will have fewer mistakes and work more efficiently, leading to the increase of profit for the enterprise. The second point of difference is regarding impact on unemployment rate. The lecturer asserts that for the sake of saving money, the employers might raise their expectation on 4-day employees, rather than recruit more people. Consequently, the employees who work 4 days will be forced to finish what they did in 5 days previously, and therefore no additional jobs will be created. Finally, the lecturer argues that not only the quality of life will decline if an employee works shorter hours and receives less pay, but also they have less chance to be promoted to a supervisory position. However, the reading passage contends that more leisure hours can create opportunities to strengthen family ties and allow employees to develop private interests, making them feel more satisfied about life. The lecturer claims that the new policy, which allows people to work four days a week instead of five, will have negative effects for companies as well as society. Consequently, employees who work 4 days will be forced to finish what they did in 5 days previously, and no additional jobs will be created. Finally, the lecturer argues that under the new policy, employees will experience not only decreased quality of life (as shorter working hours will translate into less pay), but also fewer chances to be promoted to supervisory positions. However, the reading passage contends that more leisure hours can create opportunities to strengthen family ties and allow employees to develop private interests, making them feel more satisfied with their lives.TPO2(ETS满分版):The lecturer talks about research conducted by a firm that used the group system to handle their work. He says that the theory stated in the passage was very different and somewhat inaccurate when compared to what happened in reality.First, some members got free rides. That is, some didn't work hard but got recognition for the success nontheless. This also indicates that people who worked hard were not given recognition they should have gotten. In other words, they weren't given the opportunity to “shine”. This directly contradicts what the passage indicates.Second, groups were slow in progress. The passage says that groups are more responsive than individuals because of the number of people involved and their aggregated resources. However, the speaker talks about how the firm found out that groups were slower than individuals in decision making. Groups needed more time for meetings, which are necessary procedures in decision making. This was another place where experience contradicted theory.Third, influential people might emerge and lead the group towards glory or failure. If the influent people are going in the right direction there would be no problem. But in cases where they go in the wrong direction, there is nobody that has enough influence to counter the decision made. In other words, the group might turn into a dictatorship, with the influential party as the leader, and might become less flexible in its thinking. They might become one-sided, and thus fail to succeed.Rating annotation:Once you can read...

若有不妥之处,请见谅啊 :-)第一段第一行: …better than have broad knowledge… better than的比较对象是名词的形式所以后面改为having broad knowledge第二行: it can give people… give是口语化词汇,意思太多,建议写作不要用。
改为offer The most difficult 过于绝对化,建议把the most去掉第四行: like是口语化词汇,改为such as第二段第一行: make speople easier to change their jobs.. 这句话感觉也比较口语化,可以改为: …larger range of knowledge renders people the opportunities to adjust their career path when…第二行: find some areas are not promising… 正确用法: find sth + adj 所以改为find some areas unpromising第四行: 前面用过enough了,所以这里改为adequate Find some area's scope… some area前面出现过,为了保证用词多样性,改为certain domain's scope倒数第二行:又一次出现larger range of knowledge,可简洁的改为more know-how第三段第一行: benefit的通常用法是benefit sb, 或者 benefitsth. 建议改为:benefit people who work in interdisciplinary areas. 去掉了some, 因为这个词出现过几次第二行: 21th 改为 21st century第三行: 建议把interdisciplinary areas 改为 interdisciplinary talents 21世纪属于复合型人才可能更恰当一些第四行: merely knowledge 副词merely不能修饰名词knowledge,改为one with the mere knowledge of …第五行: …one owns broad knowledge of… own通常指拥有的物品,知识的话建议用“习得或掌握”改为one grasps / acquires the knowledge of…
建议还是沿用oneInterdisciplinary 出现过很多次,不妨把这句话变成 could one work in various fields…第四段第一行: having alarge range of knowledge..出现过几次了,建议改为 wide scope of knowledge第五行:前面出现过thinking methods,这里可以用thinking patterns There is no thinking way could be perfect… 语法有问题,有两个系动词is和 could be. Since one way of thinking might cause myopia最后一行: consider a thing… thing建议不要在托福作文出现,因为意思太多,比较口语化。
Since one way of thinking might cause myopia, considering as many perspectives as we can would be more beneficial.最后一段第一行: a broad range of knowledge… a narrow range of knowledge…
In a nutshell, erudition is much better than specializing in one area because…
