Passage 1
There are stories about two U.S. presidents, Andrew Jackson and Martin Van Buren, which attempt to explain the American English term OK. We don’t know if either story is true, but they are both interesting.
The first explanation is based on the fact that President Jackson had very little education. In fact, he had difficulty reading and writing. When important papers came to Jackson, he tried to read them and then had his assistants explain what they said. If he approved of a paper, he would write “all correct” on it. The problem was that he didn’t know how to spell, so what he really wrote was “ol korekt”. After a while, he shortened that term to “OK”.
The second explanation is based on the place where President Van Buren was born, Kinderhook, New York. Van Buren’s friends organized a club to help him become President. They called the club the Old Kinderhook Club, and anyone who supported Van Buren was called “OK”.
11. The author __________.
A. believes both of the stories
B. doesn’t believe a word of the stories
C. is not sure whether the stories are true
D. is telling the stories just for fun
12. According to the passage, President Jackson __________.

B. didn’t like to read important papers by himself
C. often had his assistants sign documents for him
D. wasn’t good at reading, writing or spelling
13. According to the first story, the term “OK” ___________.
A. was approved of by President Jackson
B. was the title of some official documents
C. was first used by President Jackson
D. was an old way to spell “all correct”
14. According to the second story, the term “OK” __________.
A. was the short way to say “Old Kinderhook Club”
B. meant the place where President Van Buren was born
C. was the name of Van Buren’s club
D. was used to call Van Buren’s supporters in the election
15. According to the second story, the term “OK” was first used _________.
A. by Van Buren
B. in a presidential election
C. to organize the Old Kinderhook Club
D. by the members of the “Old Kinderhook Club”
Passage 2
Normally a student must attend a certain number of courses in order to graduate, and each course which he attends gives him a credit which he may count towards a degree. In many American universities the total work for a degree consists of thirty-six courses each lasting for one semester. A typical course consists of three classes per week for fifteen weeks; while attending a university a student will probably attend four or five courses during each semester. Normally a student would expect to take four years attending two semesters each year. It is possible to spread the period of work for the degree over a longer period. It is also possible for a student to move between one university and another during his degree course, though this is not in fact done as a regular practice.
For every course that he follows a student is given a grade, which is recorded, and the record is available for the student to show to prospective employers. All this imposes(施加)a constant(持续不断的)pressure and strain (负担)of work, but in
spite of this some students still find time for great activity in student affairs. Elections to positions in student organizations arouse much enthusiasm. The student organizations are effective in ensuring that the students observe university
regulations. Any student who is thought to have broken the rules, for example, by cheating has to appear before a student court. With the enormous numbers of students, the operation of the system does involve a certain amount of activity. A student who has held one of these positions of authority is much respected and it will be of benefit to him later in his career.
16. Normally an American university student would attend ________ courses for a degree.

C. evaluating students’ performance by bringing them before a court

Passage 3
Yuppies are young people who earn a lot of money and live in a style that is too expensive for most people. If you are invited to a Yuppie dinner party, don’t be
surprised if you are offered freshly cooked insects as a first course. While the idea of eating fried insects fills most of us with horror, insect eating is becoming highly fashionable. For example, in the media industry, successful managers are often seen to eat fried or boiled insects from time to time while working at their desks. These safe-to-eat insects can be found and ordered on the Internet. And young people are logging on to foreign food websites and ordering samples of prepared insects to serve at their dinner parties. Although the idea of eating insects is probably disgusting to most of us, few people would claim that pigs, chickens and some kinds of seafood we often eat are examples of great beauty. One day, insects would be marketed and sold as a food item in supermarkets. According to their fans of Yuppies, they are not only healthy, but also very tasty. But until our attitudes to food change, it seems that insects eaters will remain a select few.

Passage 4
We can make mistakes at any age. Some mistakes we make are about money. But most mistakes are about people. “Did Jerry really care when I broke up with Helen?” “When I got that great job, did Jerry really feel good about it as a friend?” Or “Did he
envy my luck?” When we look back, doubts like these can make us feel bad. But when we look back, it’s too late.
Why do we go wrong about our friends — or our enemies? Sometimes what people say
hides their real meaning. And if we don’t really listen, we miss the feeling behind
the words. Suppose someone tells you, “you’re a lucky dog.” Is he really on your side? If he says, “You’re a lucky guy” or “You’re a lucky gal”, that’s being friendly. But “lucky dog”? There’s a bit of envy in those words. Maybe he doesn’t
see it himself. But bringing in the “dog” bit puts you down a little. What he may be saying is that he doesn’t think you deserve your luck.
How can you tell the real meaning behind someone’s words? One way is to take a
good look at the person talking. Do his words fit the way he looks? His posture (体
态)? The look in his eyes? Stop and think. The minute you spend thinking about the real meaning of what people say to you may save another mistake.
26. From the questions in the first paragraph we can learn that the speaker _______________.
A. feels happy, thinking of how nice his friends were to him
B. feels he may not have “read” his friends’ true feelings correctly
C. thinks it was a mistake to have broken up with his girl friend, Helen
D. is sorry that his friends let him down
27. In the second paragraph, the author uses the example of “You’re a lucky dog” to show that ______________.
A. the speaker of this sentence is just being friendly
B. this saying means the same as “You’re a lucky guy” or “You’re a lucky gal”
C. sometimes the words used by a speaker give a clue to the feeling behind the words
D. the word “dog” shouldn’t be used to apply to people
28. This passage tries to tell you how to ___________.
A. avoid mistakes about money and friends
B. bring the “dog” bit into our conversation
C. avoid mistakes in understanding what people tell you
D. keep people friendly without trusting them
29. In listening to a person, the important thing is _____________.
A. to notice his tone, his posture, and the look in his eyes
B. to listen to how he pronounces his words
C. not to believe what he says
D. to check his words against his manner, the look in his eyes, and his posture
30. If you followed the advice of the writer, you would ________________.
A. be able to get the real meaning of what people say to you
B. avoid any mistakes while talking with people who envy you

Sometimes what people say hides their real meaning.
Maybe he doesn’t see it himself.

B. this saying means the same as “You’re a lucky guy” or “You’re a lucky gal”
C. sometimes the words used by a speaker give a clue to the feeling behind the words
D. the word “dog” shouldn’t be used to apply to people
28. This passage tries to tell you how to ___________.
A. avoid mistakes about money and friends

1, f you travel by air across the center of Africa or South America, you fly over forests for thousands of kilometers. 如果你坐飞机旅行穿越非洲中部或者南美洲,你就飞过了上万公里的森林:
These great forests are the oceans of trees. There are thousands and thousands of different kinds of plants and animals.
However, the world's forests are getting smaller all the time. We are cutting down the trees because we need wood, and we need more farmland. Some people say that there will not be any forests like these in 20 or 30 years. What will happen if they disappear?
If we cut down our forests, a lot of plants and animals will disappear from the world. In a lot of places the new farmland will soon look like the old deserts. Crops will not grow there. It will not rain very often, and the weather will get very hot. Perhaps the climate of the world will change. This will be dangerous for everyone in the world. That is why we must take care of our forests. (1),The passage mainly tells us about the importance of taking care of plants.

2, In the United States, it is not customary to telephone someone very early in the morning.
在美国通常不会在清晨给人家打电话: If you telephone him early in the day, while he is shaving or
having breakfast, the time of the call shows that the matter is very important and requires immediate attention. The same meaning is attached to telephone calls made after 11:00 pm. If someone receives a call during sleeping hours, he assumes it's a matter of life or death. The time chosen for the call communicates its importance. In social life, time plays a very important part. In the U.S.A. guests tend to feel they are not highly regarded if the invitation to a dinner party is extended only three or four days before the party date. But it is not true in all countries. In other areas of the world, it may be considered foolish to make an appointment too far in advance because plans which are made for a date more than a week away tend to be forgotten. The meaning of time differs in different parts of the world. Thus, misunderstandings arise between people from different cultures that treat time differently. Promptness is valued highly in American life, for example. If people are not prompt, they may be regarded as impolite or not fully responsible. In the U.S. no one would think of keeping a business associate waiting for an hour, it would be too impolite. A person, who is 5 minutes late, will say a few words of explanation, though perhaps he will not complete the sentence.

1, The workers who brought the girl to the orphanage knew little about her(将这个女孩儿带到
孤儿院的工作者们对这个女孩的情况几乎不怎么了解). The streets where they found her had been
her home for many years. Her parents were unknown. They left her long ago. At the orphanage, the girl, like all the children there, was taught to read and write. While she was studying at the orphanage, she learned something else-to be independent. At twenty-one,she left the orphanage and began work as a secretary. And then,in 1975, while she was still working as an ordinary secretary, something special happened. She entered the Miss Hong Kong competition and won it. This was the turning point in her life. Now her name,Mary Cheung, was known to everybody.
Mary entered the competition because she wanted to show that orphanage girls could be something. Winning the competition gave her the chance to start a new life. This led her first into television and then into business as a manager. When she was working as a manager, she had trouble with her reports. "My English just wasn't good enough." she says. Luckily, she had a boyfriend (who later became her husband) to help her.
Mary studied management at Hong Kong Polytechnic and graduated in 1980. She started her own business in 1985. But she did not stop developing herself. She then studied at the University of Hong Kong. Since 1987,she had spent a lot of time on photography. She has held several exhibitions of her work in many places-China, New Zealand and Paris. She still found time, however, to work on TV, write for newspapers and bring up her family.

2, There are three kinds of goals: short-term, medium-range and long-term goals(目标有三种:短
期目标,中期目标和长期目标).
Short-term goals are those that usually deal with current activities, which we can apply on a daily basis. Such goals can be achieved in a week or less, or two weeks, or possibly, months. It should be remembered that just as a building is no stronger than its foundation, long-term goals cannot amount to very munch without the achievement of solid short-term goals. Upon completing our short-term goals, we should date the occasion and then add new short-term goals that will build on those that have been completed.
The intermediate goals build on the foundation of the short-term goals. They might deal with just one term of school or the entire school year, or they could even extend for several years. Any time you move a step at a time, you should never allow yourself to become discouraged or overwhelmed. As you complete each step, you will enforce the belief in your ability to grow and succeed. And as your list of completion dates grow, your motivation and desire will increase.
Long-term goals may be related to our dreams of the future. They might cover five years or more. Life is not a static thing. We should never allow a long-term goal to limit us or our course of action.
(1),Our long-term goals mean a lot _______.

1.你对"失败乃成功之母"的看法;
2.举例说明你的看法:
Failure is the Mother of Success. (失败乃成功之母:)
参考例文:
Failure is the mother of success.
All of us experience failure every now and then. Failure or the threat of failure is something
that we have to live with all our lives.
Although, some people will avoid failure at all costs, some people welcome it. Failure can be a
good teacher. It always teaches us to be better the second time around. As they say, "The more you try,
the more you'll succeed."
There is some wisdom to be learned from failure. If we can learn to turn a failure to our advantage, we will have learned another secret to success. Failure is the mother of success and success that comes after failure is so sweet.

二,阅读理解
1, There was once an ant that was very thirsty.有一只蚂蚁很渴:
It ran here and there looking for some water but could not find any.
Then suddenly, when the ant was almost ready to die of thirst, a large drop of water fell on it.
The ant drank the water, which saved its life.
The water was actually a tear from a young girl who was crying. Because of her sadness, the tear had magical qualities and suddenly the ant could speak the language of human beings.
The ant looked up and saw the young girl sitting in front of a huge pile of seeds.
"Why are you sad?" asked the ant.
"I'm the prisoner of a giant." the girl told the ant. "He won't let me go until I've made three separate heaps of grain, barley(大麦)and rye(黑麦)out of this huge pile of seeds in which they are all mixed together."
"That will take you a month!" the ant said, looking at the huge pile of seeds.
"I know," the girl cried, "and if I haven't finished by tomorrow, the giant will eat me for his supper!"
"Don't cry," the ant said, "my friends and I will help you."
Soon thousands of ants were at work, separating the three kinds of seeds.
The next morning, when the giant saw that the work had been done, he let the girl go.
Thus it was one of her tears that saved her life.

2, Places to stay in Britain are as varied as the places you visit. 在英国,住的地方随着你游览地
点的不同而有所区别: Whatever your budget is the choice -from basic barn to small hotel, from tiny cottage to grand castle - is all part of fun.
Hostels
Cheap, good-value hostels are aimed at all types of like-minded travelers, who prefer value over luxury and you don't have to be young or single to use them. Britain's independent hostels and backpackers hostels also offer a great welcome. Facilities and prices vary, especially in rural areas, where some hostels are a little more than a bunkhouse (临时住房) while others are remarkably
comfortable - almost like bargain hotels.
Youth Hotels
Founded many years ago to "help all, especially young people of limited means, to a greater knowledge, love and care of the countryside", the Youth Hotels Association is still going strong in the st21 century. The network of 230 hotels is a perfect gateway for exploring Britain's towns and countryside.
B&Bs

In country areas your B&B might be in a village or an isolated farm surrounded by fields. Prices reflect facilities: and usually run from around ,12 to ,20 per person. City B&Bs charge
about ,25 to ,30 per person, although they're often cheaper as you go further out to the suburbs. Pubs & Inns
As well as selling drinks and meals, Britain's pubs and inns sometimes offer B&B, particularly in country areas. Staying a night or two can be great fun and puts you at the heart of the local community.
Rates range from around ,15 to ,25 per person. Pubs are more likely to have single rooms.
