Sociologists, working in western countries, have found that a large number of women wished they had been born men. The number is said to be as high as 6 % in Germany.
“ Women often wish they had the same chances as men have, and think it is still men's world, ” said Dr James Helen, one of the sociologists who did the study.
Many men say that they have more duties than women. A man has to make money to support his family and to make the important decision, so it is right for men to be paid more. Some are even against their wives working at all. When wives go out to work, they say, the home and children cannot be taken good care of. If women take full--time jobs, they won’t be able to do what they are best
doing: making a nice home and bringing up the children.
Some women disagree. They say they want to get out of their homes and to have freedom to choose between work and home life. Women have the right of equal pay and equal chances.
Anne Harper has a very good job. She also believes in “Women’s Liberation”, “I don’t wish I were a man,” she says, “and I don’t think many women do. But I do wish people would stop treating us like second—class people. At work, for
example, we usually do the work that men do but get paid less. There are still a lot of jobs only to men-usually they are the best ones. If you are a man, you have a much better chance of living a wonderful life. How many women scientists are there…or engineers?”

16 When a starving man gets a meal, he begins to think about an overcoat; when an executive gets a new sports car, visions of country clubs and pleasure beats dance into view.
The many wants of mankind might be regarded as making up several levels. 17.
The first and most basic level of wants involves food. Once this want is satisfied, a second level of wants appears: clothing and some sort of shelter. By the end of World War II these wants were satisfied for a great majority of Americans. 18 It included such items as automobile sand new houses.
By 1957 or 1958 this third level of wants was fairly well satisfied. Then, in the late 1950s a fourth level of wants appeared: the “life-enriching” level. While
the other levels involve physical satisfaction, the feeding, comfort, safety, and
transportation of the human body, this level stresses mental needs for
recognition, achievement and happiness. It includes a variety of goods and services, many of which could be called “luxury” items. Among them are vacation trips, the best medical care, and entertainment. 19
One this level, a greater percentage of consumer spending goes to services, while on the first three levels more is spent on goods. Will consumers raise their sights to a fifth level of wants as their income increases, or will they continue to demand luxuries and personal services on the fourth level?
A fifth level probably would involve wants that can be achieved best by community action. Consumers may be spending more on taxes to pay for government action against disease, ignorance, crime and prejudice. 20 In
this way, we can enjoy more fully the good things on the first four levels. A(Then a third level appeared.

Computers are very important to modern life. Many people think that in the future computers will be used in lots of everyday life. It is thought that we won?t have to go shopping because we will be able to get most things which are sold in shops on the Internet. There will be no more books because we will be able to get all texts from computers. The Internet will be used to play games, see films and buy food. Most telephone calls will be made by computers, too. Some people are glad about these new ways of shopping and communicating. Others do not think that computers will replace our old ways. Let ?s look at books, for example. Some people think that one day we will not read books made of paper. Instead, we will buy and read books using computers. We will read texts on small pocket computers. The computers will keep many different books in them at the same time. We won?t need to turn lots of pages and paper will be saved. Computerized(计算机化) books will be used more and more. Is Internet shopping such a pleasure as going to the shop? Many people say it is not. It is a pleasure to go into shops and look at things you want to buy. It is also unlikely that many people will want to read large texts on our computers, because paper books will perhaps be more friendly. Maybe computers won?t change these two habits.

Even with the soaring use of computer keyboards for writing, traditional handwriting is still a key part of the way people communicate. If you have poor handwriting there are things you can do to improve it. The methods are the same for both children and adults. With practice, your handwriting will get better. Improving your handwriting could be as simple as changing the way you hold your pencil, or simply slowing down when you write.

When an earthquake hit a small town, many houses fell down.
After the earthquake, all the newspapers reported many stories about some of the families who were in trouble.
One Sunday,when I was reading a newspaper,a special picture
touched me. It gave the clothing sizes of each family member. I thought that this would be a good chance to teach my children to help those who were less lucky than themselves. I said to my seven?year?old twins,Brad and Brett, and three?year?old
Meghan,“We have so much, and these poor people now have nothing. We’ll share what we have with them.”
I filled a box with foods and clothes. While I was doing this,I encouraged the boys to choose their toys and donate some
of their less favourite things. Meghan watched quietly as the boys took out their old toys and games and put them together. Then she walked away. A few minutes later she came back with Lucy, her much?loved doll. She put the doll on top of the other
toys. “Oh,dear,”I said. “You don’t have to give Lucy. You love her so much.” Meghan said,“Lucy makes me happy,Mommy.
Maybe she’ll make another little girl happy, too.”
I looked at Meghan for a long moment. She taught me a lesson. It’s easy to give something that we don’t want any more, but hard to give what we cherish(珍爱),isn’t it?

It seems to be strange to you there is a blind spot (盲
点)on the eyes. Here is an interesting experiment (实验) that
can make something disappear, when one eye is open.
Make a card about the size of a postcard and write two English letters L and R on it, L on the left and R on the right. First, hold the card about 80 cm away and you see both the letters. Then close your right eye and look at the letter R only with your left eye. And now, as you move the card slowly towards you, you’ll find the letter L disappearing. But if you move the card nearer to your face, the letter will be seen again. Now do the same experiment with your left eye closed, you’ll find the letter R disappearing.
Why does the letter disappear? It is because there is a blind spot on the eye. When the image (影像) of the letter
falls on the blind spot, it won’t be seen. That is why either of the letters disappears.

Hollywood movies are regularly filled with sex and violence. They can be exciting films but sometimes all you want is a little light-hearted entertainment.
Have you heard of Bollywood? All singing, all dancing and unrealistic, it is the perfect alternative to normal Hollywood movies. Bollywood is the Indian film industry, based in Mumbai, formerly known as Bombay. 36 Yet Bollywood is the largest
producer of films in the world. This year the Indian Filmgare Awards, Bollywood's Oscars, turn 50 years old.
The typical Bollywood movie usually has the following ingredients: a cup of romance, a tea-spoon of comedy, a dash of international sight-seeing, served with a huge slice of singing and dancing. There will also be one brave hero, one beautiful heroine and one baddie. 37
Bollywood films are full of ideal things and free of daily worries. 38 The actors change clothes and locations within a single song. But the audience don't mind. To Indian movie lovers, especially the poor, such films are a gateway to heaven and the stars are their gods. The films take them to a magical world away from their everyday troubles. The films tell them the impossible is possible and that true love conquers all.
39 Behind the beautiful scenes, Bollywood still emphasizes traditional family values. In most films, if two lovers want to break an arranged marriage, they can't just run away. They must win over their parents.
Bollywood is a decent refreshing replacement for those over-stimulating Hollywood films. 40 They will take you to a
brighter, cheerier and more colorful world, where it's still cool to dance around a tree and sing a love song.
A(Bollywood has gradually won its reputation on the world stage.
B(There is never any mention of politics, poverty or war.
C(Most Chinese school kids have probably never seen an Indian film.
D(Bollywood films are mostly comic romances with light-hearted incidental music.
E. Bollywood pays great attention to traditional values.
F(The result is a fun-filled musical.
G(So if you're tired of all that Hollywood actions, check out the following Bollywood films.

Making friends is a skill like many other skills. It improves with practice. If you want to meet people and make friends, you must be willing to take some actions. You must first go where there are people. You won’t make friends staying home alone. Join a club or a group. Talking with those who
like the same things as you do is much easier. Or join someone in some activities. Many people are nervous when talking to strangers. After all, meeting strangers means facing the unknown. And it’s human nature to feel a bit uncomfortable about the unknown. Most of our fears about dealing with new people come from doubts about ourselves. We imagine other people are judging us or finding us too tall or too short, too this or too that. But don’t forget that they must be feeling the same way. Try to accept yourself as you are and try to put the other person at ease. You’ll both feel more comfortable.
Try to act self-confidently even if you don’t feel that way. When you enter a room full of strangers, such as a new classroom, walk tall and straight, look directly at other people and smile.
If you see someone you’d like to speak to, say something. Don’t wait for the other person to start a conversation.
Just meeting someone new does not mean that you will make friends with that person —friendship is based on mutual liking and ―give and take‖. It takes time and effort to develop. 50. You can’t make friends if you .
A . take some actions B. go to the people
C. wouldn’t like to meet people D. won’t start a conversation 51. Friendship is based on .
A . self-confidence and being rich

B. Making friends needs to be more active.
C. When meeting someone, make him feel nice and easy.
D .Before making friends with someone, judge if he is too this or too that. 53.The best title of the text may be A . Friendship B. How to Make Friends
C. Meeting New People D. Facing the Unknown

第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
Pet-keeping is a time-honored tradition. One of the reasons for people to raise dogs or cows was usefulness. While people in the past hunted animals and kept them in their backyards, the civilsed man today is less cruel towards them and is less exploitative(利用的).
that has aesthetic(审美的)value, and this is why we treasure paintings or fine furniture. Keeping pets is one form of this urge. A Siamese cat in the house can be a decorative object. Pets are playful animals and they amuse us. A little rabbit amuses us by its playful and lively runs. 63.
to have pets in the house for their children. Having pets is an
excellent way of developing in children the love of animals and responsibility. Children get the opportunity to take on full responsibility for another creature ’s life. It will be an educational experience for a child to watch the natural life cycle of an animal. There are psychological benefits for children. Pets are welcome friends for children who are lonely. Pets are excellent companions. Keeping pets means giving love and being loved. We find comfort in giving care and receiving care in return. We get pleasure from their appearance and their behavior.
As more people move into apartments, there are limitations on keeping of animals like dogs and monkeys. Therefore, caged animals have increased in popularity. Birds fall into this group. We keep them for their beautiful songs and feathers. Fish-keeping is a widespread hobby and the keeper can observe their behavior in the glass tank and study its entire life cycle. The cat is a fine house pet and it fits neatly into human habitation(居住地) without requiring its own cage. They are wonderful hunters, Pets satisfy man’s desire to care for a bit of nature.
