Doctors say anger can be an extremely damaging emotion, unless you learn how to deal with it. They warn that anger can lead to heart disease, stomach problems, headaches, emotional problems and possibly cancer.
Anger is a normal emotion that we all feel from time to time. Some people express anger openly in a calm reasonable way. Others burst with anger, and scream and yell. But other people keep their anger inside. They can not or will not express it. This is called repressing anger.
For years many doctors thought that repressing anger was more dangerous to a person's health than expressing it. They said that when a person is angry, the brain releases the same hor- mones (荷尔蒙 ).They speed the heart rate, raise blood pressure, or sugar into the blood, etC. In general the person feels excited and ready to act.
Some doctors say that both repressing and expressing anger can be dangerous. They believe that those who express anger violently may be more likely to develop heart disease, and they believe that those who keep their anger inside may face a greater danger of high blood pressure. Doctors say the solution is learning how to deal with anger. They say the first step is to admit that you are angry and to recognize the real cause of the anger, then decide if the cause is serious enough to get angry about. If it is, they say, ―Do not express your anger while angry. Wait until your anger has cooled down and you are able to express yourself calmly and reasonably.‖
Doctors say that a good way to deal with anger is to find humor in the situation that has made you angry. They said that laughter is much healthier than anger.

There is a popular belief among parents that schools are no longer interested in spelling. No school I have ever taught in has ever ignored spelling or considered it unimportant as a basic skill. There are, however, different ideas about how to teach it, or how much priority (优先 ) it must be given over general language development and writing ability. The problem is how to encourage a
child to express himself freely and confidently in writing without holding him back with the complexities (复杂性 ) of spelling.
If spelling becomes the only focal (焦点的 ) point of his teacher‘ s interest, clearly a bright child will be likely to “ . He will tend to write only words within his spelling range, choosing to avoid adventurous language. That ‘ s why teachers often encourage the early use of dictionaries and pay attention to content rather than technical ability.
I was once shocked to read on the bottom of a sensitive piece of writing about a personal experience: ―This work is terrible! There are far too many spelling errors and your writing is terrible.‖ It may have been a sharp criticism of the pupil‘s technical abilities in writing, but it was also a sad reflection on the teacher who had omitted(

Perhaps the most famous theory, the study of body movement, was suggested by Professor Ray Birdwhistell. He believes that physical appearance is often culturally programmed. In other words, we learn our looks--- we are not born with them.
A baby has generally informed face features. A baby, according to Birdwhistell, learns where to set the eyebrows by looking at those around--- family and friends. This helps explain why the people of some areas of the US looks much alike.
New Englanders or Southerners have certain common face features that can not be explained by genetics (遗传学 ). The exact shape of the mouth is not set at birth, it is learned after. In fact, the final mouth shape is not formed until well after new teeth are set. For many, this can be well into grown-ups. A husband and wife together for a long time often come to look somewhat alike. We learn our looks from those around us.
This is perhaps why in a single country there are areas where people smile more than those in other areas. In the US, for example, the south is the part of the country where the people smile most frequently. In New England they smile less, and in the western part of New York States still less. Many southerners find cities such as New York cold and unfriendly, partly because people in Madison Avenue smile less than people on Peachtree Street in Atlanta, Georgia. People in largely populated areas also smile and greet each other in public less than people in small towns do. 1. Ray Birdwhistell believes that physical appearance ___________.
A . has little to do with culture B . has much to do much culture
C . is ever changing D . is different from place to place
2. According to the passage, the final mouth shape is formed _________.
A . before birth B . as soon as one‘s teeth are newly set
C . some time after new teeth are set D . around 15 years old
3. Ray Birdwhistell can tell what area of the US a person is from by _______.
A . how much he or she smiles B . how he or she raise his or her eyebrows C . what he or she likes best D . the way he or she talks
4. People who live _________ are more friendly.
A . in largely populated areas B . in New York City

"Get up, get up, Jim. It's time to get up!" my mother said while she was pushing me. I opened my eyes and looked at the clock. "Oh dear! It's a quarter to eight already. I'll be late for school again," I thought. I jumped out of the bed, washed my face, then hurried to the bus stop without breakfast. As soon as I got on the bus, it started running. "I'm sure I can get to the school on time," I said to myself. Suddenly the bus stopped. The bus driver got off the bus, then got on the bus again and said, "I'm sorry, ladies and gentlemen. "Now take off your wet coat and put this one or you'll catch cold," he said kindly.

Tom Dyson tried to find out what his lie detector could do. One day he fixed the little box to a flowering plant that was growing in a pot. He didn't say anything at all, but began to think some cruel thoughts.
"I'm going to cut off these flowers, " he thought. "They're getting old and ugly, " (That wasn't true, because the flowers were young and lovely.) "So I'll cut them off..." In June 1977, a baby girl became seriously ill in Qatar, near Saudi Arabia. Doctors were unable to find out the cause of her illness with confidence, so she was sent to Hammersmith Hospital in London. She was then only semi-consciousand on the "Dangerously lee" list. Once, at the end of the term, we had to take an important test in chemistry. The test had a hundred questions. Beside each question, we had to write "True" or "False". While I was studying in my room the night before the test, Fred was watching television. Fred usually worried a lot the night before a test. But on that night he looked perfectly calm. Then he told me of his plan.
"It's very simple. There are a hundred questions and I have to get fifty correct to pass the test. I'll take a coin into the examination room. I haven't studied a chemistry book for months, so I'll just toss(
The next day Fred came cheerfully into the examination room. He sat tossing a coin for half an hour as he marked down his answers. Then he left, half an hour before the rest of us.
The next day, he saw the chemistry professor in the corridor (走廊).
"Oh, good," he said. "Have you got the result of the test? What mark did I get?" The professor looked at him and smiled.
"Ah, it's you, Baines. Just a minute."
Then he reached into his pocket and took out a coin. He threw it into the air, caught it in his hand and looked at it.
"I'm terribly sorry, Baines," he said, "you failed."

Passage 46
Once upon a time there was a great Greek hero, Hercules. He was taller and stronger than anyone you have ever seen. On his shoulder he carried a club and in his hand he held a bow. He was known as the hero of a hundred adventures.
Hercules served a king. The king was afraid of him. So again and again he sent him on difficult tasks. One morning the king sent for him and told him to fetch three golden apples for him from the garden of the Singing Maidens. But no one knew where the garden was.
So Hercules went away. He walked the whole day the next day and the next. He walked for months before he saw mountains far in the distance one fine morning. One of the mountains was in the shape of a man, with long, long legs and arms and huge shoulders and a huge head. He was holding up the sky. Hercules knew he was atlas, the Mountain God. So he asked him for help.
Atlas answered, "My head and arms and shoulders all ache. Could you hold up the sky while I fetch the golden apples for you?"
Hercules climbed the mountain and shouldered the sky. Soon the sky grew very heavy. When finally Atlas came back with three golden apples, he said. "Well, you are going to carry the mountain for ever. I'm going to see the king with the apples." Hercules knew that he couldn't fight him because of the sky on his back. So he shouted.

Taking pictures is fun. And taking good ones is easy if you follow a few simple rules. Before you snap a picture, think about it. Be sure you are close enough to your subject.
A pretty face against a plain background, for instance, makes a good picture. But a distant figure lost among trees and clouds lacks interest. In a landscape scene, try to keep at least two-thirds of the picture below the line where the ground meets the sky. For a sky scene, keep at least two-thirds of the picture above that line.
Study pictures in newspapers and books. Try to see why some are better than others. Use what you learn to improve your own pictures.

Passage 49
Have you ever wondered why different animals or pests have their particular colours? Colours in them seem to be used mainly to protect themselves.
Birds, especially seagulls are very fond of locusts, but birds can't easily catch locusts because locusts change their colours together with the change of the colour of crops. When crops are green, locusts look green. But when crops are ripe, locusts take on exactly the same brown colour as crops have. Some other pests with different colours from plants are usually easily found and eaten by their enemies. So they have to hide themselves in terror for lives and appear only at night.
If you study the animal life in any part of the world, you will find the main use of colouring is to protect themselves. Bears, wolves and other beasts move quietly through forests. They are usually invisible to the eyes of hunters, because they have the colour much like the barks of trees.
An even more strange act remains to be noticed. A kind of fish living in seas can send out a kind of very black liquid when it faces danger. While the liquid is spreading, its enemies cannot find it, and it quickly swims away. Thus, it has existed up to now though it is not powerful at all.

When the famous dancer Fred Astaire was interviewed for a job by a Hollywood producer, the movie ―expert‖ turned him down, saying, ―Can’t sing. Can’t act. Dances a little.‖ Here’s another stupid mistake. When the great scientist Albert Einstein was at school, his teachers considered him rather dull. And a final story, the famous Polish pianist Paderewski was told by a teacher that he’d never be a success as a performer because the middle finger on each hand was too short.
What lessons can be drawn from these three experiences? First, true genius(天才 ) cannot be suppressed(压抑 ). For some reason or other it works its way out. Second, early judgments of a person’s abilities may be unfair or just wrong. Thi rd, when there is a real determination to succeed, obstacles fall by the wayside.

Dear students,
Most of us get some exercise walking or riding our bikes to school, but that just isn?t enough. Why not get into shape by playing the most popular sport in the world — soccer? Two weeks ago, Mr. Goldstein, the physical education teacher, posted a notice about an exciting new soccer club (for Grades 3-5). To join, all you have to do is sign your name and be at school for the fun of it on Saturday mornings. You?ll make new friends and share information about famous teams and players
Mr. Goldstein will teach, so you?ll learn basic skills and new techniques(技巧)to improve your game. That?s good news because soccer is a game you can love three seasons a year. The only time you can?t play is when there is snow.
However, it is hard to believe that only nineteen people signed up for the new club. Maybe kids don?t want to give up their Saturday mornings. But if you think about how we spend Saturday mornings now, soccer looks good. Doing housework and watching TV are not as much fun as playing soccer with friends. If you didn?t sign up because you?ve never played soccer before, don?t worry. Beginners are welcome and Ms. Goldstein will give you more help. Just act now! The equipment is cheap. All you have to bring is your feet.

Clover, a three-year-old spirit bear, lives at the B.C. Wildlife Park near Kamloops, British Columbia, Canada. He lost his parents two years ago and was raised at a wildlife center. When he was set free into the wild, he broke into human camps looking for food. Wildlife experts tried to get him used to living on his own, but he continued to look for places where there were people. Finally the experts decided that he could not live in the wild. Since then, a total of $750,000 has been collected to create a habitat for Clover.
The habitat covers about three acres (英亩) of land and includes natural forest, two ponds connected by a small river and something else. It will add a platform and a walkway later this year so that people can see Clover and his habitat more closely. There will also be a center where people can learn more about spirit bears. Besides, a black bear will be moved into the habitat so Clover will not feel lonely.
Spirit bears are also called Kermode bears after Francis Kermode, who first studied them. Kermode discovered that a small number of black bears carry a gene(基因)for white fur. If a baby bear receives one of these genes from each parent, its fur will be a creamy white color.
There are about 1,200 bears who carry the gene for white fur, but only about 200 white Kermode bears in the world. Kermode bears are found only in British Columbia.
