She Walked Through Fire
On Thanksgiving weekend, the Heffelmire family gathered for a meal at their home. After dinner, the family went down to the finished basement to relax except Charlotte’s father, Eric, who was in the garage to fix his truck.
Around 8 pm, Charlotte decided to check on her dad. She walked through the kitchen. When she opened the side door to the garage, black smoke rose up into the kitchen. She could barely make out her father lying on his back, trapped under the truck. He’d removed the front passenger-side tyre and raised the truck on a jack(千斤拟). The truck had slipped off
the jack, and now the whole weight of the wheel was on his chest and shoulders.
Charlotte ran to the front of the truck and struggled to lift it. Eric was still conscious, and he yelled, “You got it! One more try!” She tried again and was able to tip the truck backward just enough for her to pull her dad by the shirt with both hands from under the truck.
She dragged him across the garage and 20 feet down the driveway. Then she ran back to the garage, which had burst into flames. “I was afraid the car was going to explode,” says Charlotte, so she climbed into the truck, which faced forward, turned the key, and pressed the gas pedal(油拟). The car slowly rolled out, the metal wheel scratching loudly against the concrete.
Safely on the driveway, Charlotte stopped the truck and ran back to the basement. “There’s a fire! Everybody get out!” she yelled as she picked up her three-month-old niece and ran out. Outside, she handed the baby to her mom, and then ran around to the burning garage. She picked up a garden hose(水管) and sprayed the fire while calling 911.
A few minutes later, firefighters and an ambulance arrived. Charlotte was treated for second-degree burns on both her feet and face. Her dad had injuries on his chest and shoulders, as well as minor burns on his face. The garage and the house were damaged but the family survived.
The Heffelmires are staying in an apartment while their house is rebuilt. “Charlotte is a remarkable kid,” says her dad. Charlotte, however, simply says, “I was saving my family and my house. I wasn’t going to let my dad die.” 59. Eric got trapped because _____.

Robot Surgeon(外科生医) Succeeds without Help from Human Doctors
Humans make mistakes. Even surgeons with years of experience are not infallible. But what if these doctors could pool
their knowledge and experience together and create a surgical standard of care, to be carried out by machines?
That’s the idea behind surgical robots, which may soon perform most surgeries, from sewing up tiny wounds to
performing heart procedures. Many of these operations are, in fact, already completed with the assistance of robots. But a recent test suggests that robots in the operating room may soon go a step further, performing on soft tissue completely on their own, from start to finish.
The Smart Tissue Autonomous Robot(STAR), successfully completed surgeries on pigs. “We’re the first group to develop autonomous robotic surgery with soft-tissue surgery, and when compared to standard operation, it’s better,” says Peter Kim, professor of surgery. “The idea is not to replace surgeons; it will make the surgeons better and make the procedures safer.”
A recent Mayo Clinic study found that major surgical errors—including operating on the wrong site or side of the body, or even leaving tools or objects inside the patient—occur every one out of 22,000 procedures. That’s rare, but robots like STAR would aim to lower the number even further.
In the da Vinci surgical system, surgeons place their arms inside instruments and use their hands to control the movement of robotic tools on the operating table from afar. The robot’s every major move is controlled by surgeons, and thus its results may vary based on the surgeon’s training or experience.
STAR, on the other hand, is entirely autonomous. It’s not only able to work on its own and perform surgeries with a more flexible “hand”, but it’s able to react to the unexpected incidents. Cutting into hard tissue like bones is one thing, but
operating on moving soft tissue is far more complex. STAR reacts to a changing environment, similar to how self-driving cars are programmed to not only drive on the highway, but also react to another driver making a mistake and getting in your way.
63. The underlined word “infallible” in Paragraph 1 probably means _____.
A. always rightB. really creativeC. rather responsibleD. quite smart
64. We can learn from the passage that STAR _____.
A. has been widely used in the operating roomB. can perform the operation on its own
C. can make surgeries much fasterD. will take the place of surgeons
65. In the da Vinci surgical system, _____.
A. robots are trained from afarB. surgery results depend on surgeons
C. robots always make mistakesD. surgeons have trouble controlling robots
66. In the last paragraph, the author mentions self-driving cars in order to show _____.
A. how bad getting in another driver’s way might be B. how difficult self-driving on the highway is
C. how smart an autonomous robot can be D. how dangerous operating on people is

For several years, the art trade in London has known about the possible existence of the “treasure of the western th century BC. It was said to have been discovered “by farmers” in western Iran around 1992. Out of cave”, dating from the 6
between 200 and 600 pieces, only a few have so far “surfaced”. The Iranians were very angry that they managed to seize only part of the collection and that the rest was taken abroad illegally. But now they may worry less. An academic paper has just produced convincing evidence that at least one piece is a fake (拟品).
Fakes always exist in the world of antiquities(古物), but what is astonishing is how widespread they are now. A
report from the Archaeological Institute of America concludes that no less than 80 per cent of all “ancient” west African pieces on the market are fake. How can this “forgery(拟造) culture” boom? It is found that about 80 per cent of the
antiquities traded have no clear source. In other words, it is not known where they were found and therefore, even if they are real, they can tell us little about ancient history.
People in the trade say that the majority of these objects were found in “casual discoveries”. Shamefully, they know that this is not true. They advance the fiction because it suits their commercial purposes. The reality is that the objects come
from robbery, not by local farmers “happening” on a few finds. The “treasure of the western cave” is a classic example of how faking works.
Faking is big business, and is of such a standard that even the greatest scholars may be fooled some of the time. The antiquities trade likes to play down not only the extent of robbery and faking, but also the overlap between the two. These latest reports let the cat out of the bag. But it is the overlap with robbed antiquities that is the most significant factor, which
leads to the culture of forgery.
Collectors of antiquities need to be aware that they not only aid the robbery of potentially invaluable sites, but put themselves at the mercy of fakers as well….
67. What do we probably know about the “treasure of the western cave”?
A. It’s slightly broken.B. It’s totally real.C. It’s partly fake.D. It’s fairly new.
68. What astonishes the author?
A. The huge number of fakes.B. The long history of fakes.
C. The influence of fakes.D. The origin of fakes.
69. According to the passage, “forgery culture” mainly results from _____.
A. a belief in “casual discoveries”B. high faking standards
C. antiquities without a clear sourceD. close combination of robbery and faking
70. Which is probably the last sentence of the passage?
A. This is the main source for robbery. B. What shall be done to stop this trend?
C. Are collectors of antiquities aware of it? D. They are being not just dishonest, but foolish.第二拟;共5小拟~每小拟2分~共10分,
Social Phobia
It’s natural to feel nervous, or shy in front of others at times. Most people manage to get through these moments when they need to. 71 It’s probably more than shyness. It may build up into a powerful fear. As a result, people feel uncomfortable participating in everyday social activities. This is called social phobia (also called social anxiety).
72 It prevents them from chatting with friends in the lunchroom, joining an after-school club, or going to a party.
Sometimes, they even feel too nervous to ask a question in class or go to a teacher for help. Social phobia not only prevents people from trying new things. It also prevents them from making the normal, everyday mistakes that help people improve their skills still further.
It is really sad, isn’t it? But the good news is that people with social phobia can learn to manage fear, develop confidence and communicating skills and stop avoiding things that make them nervous. Of course it’s not always easy. Dealing with social phobia takes patience, courage to face fears and the willingness to practice. 73
Therapists (治拟拟) can help people create a plan for facing social fears and build the skills and confidence to overcome it. And family or friends are especially important for them. 74 Friends and family can encourage them to pick a small
goal to aim for, remind them to go for it, and be there when they might feel discouraged. Good friends and family are there to celebrate each small success along the way.
Little by little, someone who decides to deal with extreme shyness can learn to be more comfortable. 75 As shyness
and fears begin to melt, confidence and positive feelings build. Pretty soon, the person is thinking less about what might feel
uncomfortable and more about what might be fun.
A. Friends can overcome their fears.
B. But for some, the anxiety can be extreme.
C. They are not able to make eye contact with classmates.
D. Social phobia makes people lonely or disappointed over missed opportunities.
E. It also takes a commitment to go forward rather than back away when feeling shy.
F. Each small step forward helps build enough confidence to take the next small step.
G. The support from those key people helps them gather the courage to try something new.

三、Possible versions:
Dear Jim,
I am glad to tell you something about the Chinese naming practice.
Unlike your tradition, the family name in China is put first, followed by the given name. The given name usually
contains one or two Chinese characters. Chinese people often name a baby with their best wishes in mind, like wishes for
good health, bright future and happiness. Some names imply the birth time, birth place, weather or even a natural
phenomenon at the time of the baby’s birth. In terms of choosing the characters, parents still need to consider how they
sound when combined into a name. They definitely wouldn’t want their child to be teased or given a bad nickname because of the pronunciation.
As for your Chinese name, how about “吉祥(Ji Xiang)”,The first character has a similar pronunciation to your
name Jim, and both of the characters mean “good luck”. You can imagine it: whenever someone calls you “Ji Xiang”, it’s like he or she is wishing you good luck. I hope you’ll love this Chinese name.
Yours,
Li Hua
四、One possible version:
Last week, I successfully passed the Physical Fitness Test. thDuring a PE class one month ago, our teacher informed us that we would take the test on April 12. Upon hearing
the news, I felt my heart sink, wondering how rough the way ahead would be. However, I had to face it. Every day after school, I went to the playground and practiced the 1000-meter run, which was always a nightmare for me. Each time when my legs almost gave out and an inner voice lured me to give up, my teachers and classmates were always around me, comforting me and encouraging me. Their positive words and running figures pushed me forward.
Then finally came the test day. As the starting gun sounded for the race to begin, I called upon all my body’s strength and speed. I ran with purpose. After enduring the long run, I approached the finish line. Quickening my steps, I was confident and hopeful. The moment I rounded the last turn, I knew I had made it. After crossing the finish line, I was so overjoyed to see my cheering classmates. I received their celebratory high-fives proudly and tears of happiness streamed down my cheeks, as my teacher shook my hand.
From this experience, I have learned that I should face my fears bravely and appreciate those who are always willing to help me, making me a better person.

She could barely make out her father lying on his ba ck, trapped under the truck. He’ d removed the front passenger-side tyre and raised the truck on a jack(千斤顶 ). The truck had slipped off the jack, and now the whole weight of the wheel was on his chest and shoulders.
“I was afraid the car was going to explode,” says Charlotte, so she climbed into the truck, which faced forward, turned the key, and pressed the gas pedal(油 门 ).
She picked up a garden hose(水管 ) and sprayed the fire while calling 911.
“Charlotte is a rema rkable kid,” says her dad. Charlotte, however, simply says, “I was saving my family and my house. Robot Surgeon(外科医生 ) Succeeds without Help from Human Doctors
Humans make mistakes. Even surgeons with years of experience are not But what if these doctors could pool their knowledge and experience together and create a surgical standard of care, to be carried out by machines?
That’s the idea behind surgical robots, which may soon perform most surgeries, from sewing up tiny wounds to performing heart procedures. Many of these operations are, in fact, already completed with the assistance of robots. But a recent test suggests that robots in the operating room may soon go a step further, performing on soft tissue completely on their own, from start to finish.
The Smart Tissue Autonomous Robot(STAR),successfully completed surgeries on pigs. “We’re the first group to develop autonomous robotic surgery with soft-tissue surgery, and when compared to standard operation, it’s better,” says Peter Kim, professor of surgery. “The idea is not to replace surgeons; it will make the surgeons better and make the procedures safer.”
A recent Mayo Clinic study found that major surgical errors— including operating on the wrong site or side of the body, or even leaving tools or objects inside the patient— occur every one out of 22,000 procedures.
Cutting into hard tissue like bones is one thing, but operating on moving soft tissue is far more complex. STAR reacts to a changing environment, similar to how self-driving cars are programmed to not only drive on the highway, but also react to another driver making a mistake and getting in your way.
63. The underlined word “infallible” in Paragraph 1 probably means _____.
A. always right B. really creative C. rather responsible D. quite smart 64. We can learn from the passage that STAR _____.
A. has been widely used in the operating room B. can perform the operation on its own
C. can make surgeries much faster D. will take the place of surgeons
65. In the da Vinci surgical system, _____.
A. robots are trained from afar B. surgery results depend on surgeons
C. robots always make mistakes D. surgeons have trouble controlling robots 66. In the last paragraph, the author mentions self-driving cars in order to show _____.
A. how bad getting in another driver’ s waymight be
B. how difficult self-driving on the highway is
C. how smart an autonomous robot can be
D. how dangerous operating on people is
D
For several years, the art trade in London has known about the possible existence of the “treasure of the western cave” , dating from the 6th century BC. It was said to have been discovered “by farmer s” in western Iran around 1992. Out of between 200 and 600 pieces, only a few have so far “surfaced”. The Iranians were very angry that they managed to seize only part of the collection and that the rest was taken abroad illegally. But now they may worry less. An academic paper has just produced convincing evidence that at least one piece is a fake (赝品 ).
Fakes always exist in the world of antiquities(古物 ), but what is astonishing is how widespread they are now. A report from the Archaeological Institute of America concludes that no less than 80 per cent of all “ancient” west African pieces on the market are fake. How can this “forgery(伪造 ) culture” boom? It is found that about 80 per cent of the antiquities traded have no clear source. In other words, it is not known where they were found and therefore, even if they are real, they can tell us little about ancient history.
People in the trade say that the majority of these objects were found in “casual discoveries”. Shamefully, they know that this is not true. They advance the fiction because it suits their commercial purposes. The reality is that the objects come from robbery, not by local farmers “happening” on a few finds. The “treasure of the western cave” is a classic example of how faking works.
Faking is big business, and is of such a standard that even the greatest scholars may be fooled some of the time. The antiquities trade likes to play down not only the extent of robbery and faking, but also the overlapbetween the two. These latest reports let the cat out of the bag. But it is the overlap with robbed antiquities that is the most significant factor, which leads to the culture of forgery.
Collectors of antiquitiesneed to be aware that they not only aid the robbery of potentially invaluable sites, but put themselves at the mercy of fakers as well… .
67.What do we probably know about the “ treasure of the western cave” ?
A. It’ s slightly broken. B.It ’ s totally real. C. It’ s partly fake. D. It’ s fairly new. 68. What astonishes the author?
A. The huge number of fakes. B. The long history of fakes.
C. The influence of fakes. D. The origin of fakes.
69. According to the passage, “forgery culture” mainly results from _____.
A . a belief in “casual discoveries” B. high faking standards
C. antiquities without a clear source D. close combination of robbery and faking 70. Which is probably the last sentence of the passage?
A. This is the main source for robbery.
B. What shall be done to stop this trend?
C. Are collectors of antiquities aware of it?
D. They are being not just dishonest, but foolish.

Dear Jim,
I am glad to tell you something about the Chinese naming practice.
Unlike your tradition, the family name in China is put first, followed by the given name. The given name usually contains one or two Chinese characters. Chinese people often name a baby with their best wishes in mind, like wishes for good health, bright future and happiness. Some names imply the birth time, birth place, weather or even a natural phenomenon at the time of the baby ’ s birth. In terms of choosing the characters, parents still need to consider how they sound when combined into a name. They definitely wouldn’ t want their child to be teased or given a bad nickname because of the pronunciation.
As for your Chinese name, how about “ 吉祥 (Ji Xiang) ” ? The first character has a similar pronunciation to your name Jim, and both of the characters mean “ good luck” . You can imagine it: whenever someone calls you “ Ji Xiang” , it’ s like he or she is wishing you good luck. I hope you’ ll love this Chinese name.
Yours,
Li Hua

Last week, I successfully passed the Physical Fitness Test.
During a PE class one month ago, our teacher informed us that we would take the test on April 12th . Upon hearing the news, I felt my heart sink, wondering how rough the way ahead would be. However, I had to face it. Every day after school, I went to the playground and practiced the
1000-meter run, which was always a nightmare for me. Each time when my legs almost gave out and an inner voice lured me to give up, my teachers and classmates were always around me, comforting me and encouraging me. Their positive words and running figures pushed me forward. Then finally came the test day. As the starting gun sounded for the race to begin, I called upon all my body’ s strength and speed.

For or Against? - That Is the Question
Andy is the most unreasonable and he makes me so angry that I could even scream sometimes! Of course, I sort. of have to love him because he is my twin brother . Andy and Amy(that is me) have the same curly hair and dark eyes and are equally stubborn. et, on most issues we usually take opposite positions.
Just this week in our school, there was a heated discussion on whether to adopt a school dress code . Every student would be required to wear a uniform . The teachers are divided: Some are in favor of the uniforms while others are opposed. The principal has asked the students to express their opinions by voting on the issue before decisions are made. But she will have the final word on the dress code.
I think a dress code is a good idea. The reason is simple. The less I have to decide first thing in the morning, the better. I can't tell you how many mornings I look into my closet and just stare, unable to decide what to wear.
Andy is shocked at my opinion. Last night, he even dragged out my parents' high school photo albums to show me how brilliant they looked without uniforms! He also declared,
wear a uniform, I won't feel like me!
To that I replied,
Fortunately, the bell rang before we could do each other physical harm, and we went to our separate classes. The vote for or against uniforms took place later that day . The results of the vote and the principal's decision will be announced next week . I wonder what it will be. I know how I voted, and I'm pretty sure I know how Andy voted. How would you vote -for or against?

All around the world, shoppers flock to Wal-Mart to buy everything. In Texas, they come for another reason: to see the wind turbine (涡轮机 , which supplies 5% of the store's electricity. It along with other facilities, such as exterior walls coated with heat-reflective paint, makes this Wal-Mart a green giant.
The laws of economics suggest that Wal-Mart, with 5, 200 stores worldwide, influences everything including the price of all kinds of goods. It throws its weight behind environmental responsibility, and the impact could be amazing .
Scott wants Wal-Mart to do its part too . He has promised to cut the existing greenhouse-gas emissions (排放) over the next few years and promised to construct new stores that are more efficient. He wants Wal-Mart's fleet (车队) of more than 7, 000 trucks to get twice as many miles per gallon by 2015. Factories that show Wal-Mart they're cutting air pollution will get preferential treatment in the supply chain . Wal-Mart says it's working with consumer-product manufacturers to reduce their packaging and will reward them if they do so.
Some people may doubt it is a bid to attract attention from Wal-Mart's controversial labor and health-insurance practices . But it's not just window dressing, because Wal-Mart sees profits in going green. Scott don't think there's a great interest in change.
Like Bill Gates, who started his charitable foundation, Scott happens to be promoting Wal-Mart's image at a time when his company's reputation is declining. He acknowledges that he launched the plan partly to shield (保护,庇护) Wal-Mart from bad press about its contribution to global warming.

Summer Rain
The worst days of any summer are the rainy ones. We spend all year looking forward to nice weather and long, hot days. All of winter, with its cloudy days and bitter cold, we dream of those endless days at the beach, lying on the sand and enjoying the bright and burning sun. And then, summer comes, and it rains.
As a child, I would wake up to rainy summer days and come close to crying. It wasn‘t fair. We suffered through months of school and experienced bad weather for those short ten weeks of freedom and pleasant weather.
On those rainy summer days, I had nothing fun to do and could only sit inside, staring out at the rain like a bird in a cage. I was an only child, so there was no one else to play with. My father worked from home, so I was not truly alone, but he could not actively play with me since he was at work. It was those days that I would watch whatev er was on television or read any books that I could find lying around. I‘d drag through the day and pray each night that the rain would not be there the next day. As an adult, though, my opinion of summer rain has changed. When you have to work every day, summer is not as exciting. Everything seems dull. Such a mindset makes you cheer for anything new or different. I spend the winter dreaming of summer and the summer dreaming of winter. When summer comes, I hate how hot it is. And then I look forward to the rain, because the rain brings with it a cold front, which makes me comfortable. Rainy days are still the worst days of the summer, but summer rain today means positively beautiful — and considerably cooler — weather tomorrow.

The Truth Can Set You Free
I recently got pulled over for speeding not far from my new home in Virginia. I hadn‘t been paying attention, and I had driven a few miles an hour over the speed limit.
―Can I see your license and registration?‖ the police officer asked me. I pulled both out for him, and he saw my Pittsburgh address on my Pennsylvania driver‘s license.
―What are you doing here?‖ he asked. ―Are you with the army?‖
―No, I‘m not.‖ I answered. I explained that I had just moved to Virginia, and I hadn‘t had time to re-register yet.
―So what brings you here?‖
He had asked a direct question. Without thinking very hard, I gave him a direct answer. ―Well, officer,‖ I said, ―since you‘ve asked, I have cancer. I have just months to live. We‘ve moved down here to be close to my wife‘s family.‖
―So you‘ve got cancer,‖ he said flatly. He was trying to figure me out. Was I really dying? Was I lying? He took a long look at me. ―You know, for a guy who has only a few months to live, you sure look good.‖
He was obviously thinking: ―Eit her this guy is pulling one big fat line on me, or he‘s telling the truth.‖ He was trying to question my honesty without directly calling me a liar. And so he had forced me to prove that I was being honest.
―Well, officer, I know that I look pretty healthy. I look great on the outside, but the tumors(肿瘤) are on the inside.‖ And then, I don‘t know what possessed me, but I just did it. I pulled up my shirt, showing the operational scars.
He looked at my scars. He looked in my eyes. He now knew he was talking to a dying man. Well, he wasn‘t taking this any further. He handed me back my license. ―Do me a favor.‖ he said, ―Slow down from now on.‖
The awful truth had set me free. As he went back to his police car, I had a realization. I had been one of those gorgeous blondes (金发美女 ) who could bat her eyelashes and get out of tickets. I drove home under the speed limit, and I was smiling like a beauty queen.

A bargain is something offered at a low and advantageous price. A more recent definition is: a bargain is a dirty trick to force money out of the pockets of silly and innocent people.
The cost of producing a new - for example - toothpaste would make 80p the proper price for it, so we will market it at £1.20. It is not a bad toothpaste, and as people like to try new things it will sell well to start with; but the attraction of novelty soon fades, so sales will fall. When that happens we will reduce the price to £1.15. And we will turn it into a bargain by printing 5p OFF all over it.
Sometimes it is not 5p OFF but 1p OFF. What breathtaking rudeness to advertise 1p OFF your soap or washing powder or whatever! Even the poorest old-age pensioner ought to regard this as an insult(侮辱 ), but he doesn‘t. A bargain must not be missed. People say one has to have washing powder (or whatever) and one might as well buy it a penny cheaper.
The real danger starts when unnecessary things become ?bargains‘. Many people just cannot resist bargains. Provided they think they are getting a bargain they will buy clothes they will never wear or furniture they have no space for. Once I heard of a man who bought an electric saw as a bargain and cut off two of his fingers the next day. But he had no regrets: the saw had been truly cheap.
Quite a few people actually believe that they make money on such bargains. A lady once told me: ―I‘ve had a lucky day today. I bought a dress for £120, reduced
from £400; and I bought a beautiful Persian carpet for £600, reduced from £900.‖ It will never occur to her that she has actually wasted £720. She feels as though she had made £580. She also feels, I am sure, that if she had more time for shopping, she could make a living out of it.
Some people buy in large quantities because it is cheaper. Once a couple bought enough sugar for their lifetime and the lifetime of their children and grandchildren. They thought it a bargain not to be missed. When the sugar arrived they didn‘t know where to store it – until they realized that their toilet was a very spacious one. So that was where they piled up their sugar. Not only did their guests feel rather strange whenever they were offered sugar to put into their coffee, but the toilet became extremely sticky.
To offer bargains is a commercial trick to make the poor poorer. When greedy fools fall for this trick, it serves them right.

This summer, Monika Lutz‘s life took an unusual turn. Instead of heading off to college, the high school graduate packed her bags for a Bengali jungle. Lutz, like a growing number of other young Americans, is taking a year off. Gap(间隔 ) years are quite common in Britain and Australia, but they are just beginning to catch on in the U.S. Lutz, who grew up in Boulder, Colo., has put together a 14-month schedule that includes helping deliver solar power to some communities in India and interning (实 习 ) for a fashion designer in Shanghai---experiences that are worlds away from the lecture halls and university dormitories that await other students. ―I could not be happier,‖ she says.
Why are students attracted to the gap-year concept? According to new survey data from Karl Haigler and Rae Nelson, education-policy experts and co-authors of The Gap-Year Advantage, the most common reason for this is to avoid burnout. ―I felt like I was focused on college as a means to an end,‖ says Kelsi Morgan, an incoming Middlebury College freshman who spent last year interning for a judge in Tulsa, Okla., and teaching English at an orphanage in the Dominican Republic. The hope is that after a year out of the classroom, students will enter college more energized, focused and mature. That can be an advantage for colleges too. Robert Clagett, dean of admissions at Middlebury, did some research a few years ago and found that a single gap semester was the strongest predictor of academic success at his school.
Most experts recommend securing a spot in college before taking a gap year and warn against using the time off to lengthen your resume. ―Most admissions folks can see right through that,‖ says Jim Jump, the academic dean of St. Christopher‘s School in Richmond, Va. But for students like Lutz, who, after getting rejected from five Ivies, decided to take time off, a gap year can help focus interests. Lutz now plans to apply mostly to non-Ivies that have strong marketing programs. ―This experience has really opened my eyes to the opportunities the world has to offer,‖ she says.
But at least one education expert doesn‘t want schools spreading the gap -year message. In a study that followed 11,000 members of the high school class of 1992 for eight years after graduation, Stefanie DeLuca, a sociology professor at Johns Hopkins University, found that, all things being equal, those who delayed college by a year were 64% less likely to complete a bachelor‘s degree than those who didn‘t. DeLuca did not say whether these students voluntarily started college late, but at the very least, her work indicates that taking a gap year doesn‘t guarantee success. ―I‘m not going to say that time off does not have benefits,‖ says DeLuca. ―But I think we should not be so enthusiastic.‖

The average computer user has between 5 and 15 username/password combinations to log in different kinds of accounts. Some demand you use a specific number of symbols and digits, while others require you to change your password every 60 days. The feeling of confusion resulting from memorizing these login information has grown so common that it actually has a name: password fatigue(疲 劳 ).
Having to remember so many different passwords is annoying, but it can also be dangerous. Because it is virtually impossible to remember a unique password for each of these accounts, many people leave handwritten lists of usernames and passwords on or next to their computers.
they also make it easier for thieves to hack into accounts.
Single Sign-On (SSO) confirmation and password management software can help solve this problem. With SSO, users only need to remember one password to log in to the main system.
the user will then lose access to all of the applications linked to the SSO account. Users who rely on password management software face the same problems.
Although most websites or network systems allow users to recover or change lost passwords by providing email addresses or answering a prompt(提示) , this process can waste time and cause further frustration. What is more, recovering a forgotten password is only a temporary solution.
Some computer scientists have suggested computers rely on biometrics(生物测 定学 ). 5 The use of biometrics raises questions concerning privacy and can also be expensive to practice.
Software engineers and computer security experts are still searching for the cure to password fatigue. Until they find the perfect solution, however, everyone will simply have to rely on the password system currently in place.
A.
It does not address the larger problem of password fatigue.
B.
These software programs have been built into many major web browsers.
C.
The problem with password management software makes users feel powerless. D.
The SSO software then automatically logs the user in to other accounts within the system.
E.
However, SSO confirmation and password management software also have drawbacks.
F.
This is a method of recognizing human users based on unique traits, such as fingerprints, voice, or DNA.
G.
Others solve this problem by using the same password for every account or using extremely simple passwords.

Last Saturday, I went to the Olympic Forest Park with my parents to take part in an activity called “I Walk, and I’m Fit.”
Arriving early in the morning, we were surprised to find many participants of different ages already waiting excitedly at the registration place. We joined them. Then, we gathered at the starting point, stretching arms and legs to prepare ourselves for the coming long distance walking. Soon, a signal was given and off we went along the walking route, which ran around the park. Some people walked briskly, while others just took their time to enjoy the fresh air and the beautiful natural scenery. After more than one hour‘s walking, we finally reached the finish line. The 5km journey was challenging but really enjoyable. My parents and I cheered each other for our success. Regular activities like this not only keep us fit, but also help get us closer to each other and to nature.

He’d removed the front passenger-side tyre and raised the truck on a jack(千斤顶). The truck had slipped off the jack, and now the whole weight of the wheel was on his chest and shoulders.
“I was afraid the car was going to explode,” says Charlotte, so she climbed into the truck, which faced forward, turned the key, and pressed the gas pedal(油门).
A. the kitchen was on fire B. the wheel fell off the truck
C. the front tyre was removed D. the truck slipped off the jack
60. Which of the following is the correct order of the events?
a. Charlotte called the firefighters.

Robot Surgeon(外科医生) Succeeds without Help from Human Doctors
Humans make mistakes. Even surgeons with years of experience are not infallible. But what if these doctors could pool their knowledge and experience together and create a surgical standard of care, to be carried out by machines?
That’s the idea behind surgical robots, which may soon perform most surgeries, from sewing up tiny wounds to performing heart procedures. Many of these operations are, in fact, already completed with the assistance of robots. But a recent test suggests that robots in the operating room may soon go a step further, performing on soft tissue completely on their own, from start to finish.
It’s not only able to work on its own and perform
surgeries with a more flexible “hand”, but it’s able to react to the unexpected incidents.
C. robots always make mistakes D. surgeons have trouble controlling robots
66. In the last paragraph, the author mentions self-driving cars in order to show _____.
A. how bad getting in another driver’s way might be
B. how difficult self-driving on the highway is
C. how smart an autonomous robot can be
D. how dangerous operating on people is

D
For several years, the art trade in London has known about the possible existence of the “treasure of the western cave”, dating from the 6th century BC. It was said to have been discovered “by farmers” in western Iran around 1992. Out of between 200 and 600 pieces, only a few have so far “surfaced”. The Iranians were very angry that they managed to seize only part of the collection and that the rest was taken abroad illegally. But now they may worry less. An academic paper has just produced convincing evidence that at least one piece is a fake (赝品).
Fakes always exist in the world of antiquities(古物), but what is astonishing is how widespread they are now. A report from the Archaeological Institute of America concludes that no less than 80 per cent of all “ancient” west African pieces on the market are fake. How can this “forgery(伪造) culture” boom?
The antiquities trade likes to play down not only the extent of robbery and faking, but also the overlap between the two. These latest reports let the cat out of the bag. But it is the overlap with robbed antiquities that is the most significant factor, which leads to the culture of forgery.
Collectors of antiquities need to be aware that they not only aid the robbery of potentially invaluable sites, but put themselves at the mercy of fakers as well….
67. What do we probably know about the “treasure of the western cave”?
A. It’s slightly broken. B. It’s totally real. C. It’s partly fake. D. It’s fairly new. 68. What astonishes the author?
A. The huge number of fakes. B. The long history of fakes.
C. The influence of fakes. D. The origin of fakes.
69. According to the passage, “forgery culture” mainly results from _____.
A. a belief in “casual discoveries”
B. high faking standards
C. antiquities without a clear source D. close combination of robbery and faking 70. Which is probably the last sentence of the passage?
A. This is the main source for robbery.
B. What shall be done to stop this trend?
C. Are collectors of antiquities aware of it?
D. They are being not just dishonest, but foolish.

三、Possible versions: Dear Jim,
I am glad to tell you something about the Chinese naming practice.
Unlike your tradition, the family name in China is put first, followed by the given name. The given name usually contains one or two Chinese characters. Chinese people often name a baby with their best wishes in mind, like wishes for good health, bright future and happiness. Some names imply the birth time, birth place, weather or even a natural phenomenon at the time of the baby’s birth. In terms of choosing the charac ters, parents still need to consider how they sound when combined into a name. They definitely wouldn’t want their child to be teased or given a bad nickname because of the pronunciation.
As for your Chinese name, how about “吉祥(Ji Xiang)”?The first character has a similar pronunciation to your name Jim, and both of the characters mean “good luck”. You can imagine it: whenever someone calls you “Ji Xiang”, it’s like he or she is wishing you good luck. I hope you’ll love this Chinese name. Yours,
Li Hua

Last week, I successfully passed the Physical Fitness Test.
During a PE class one month ago, our teacher informed us that we would take the test on April 12th. Upon hearing the news, I felt my heart sink, wondering how rough the way ahead would be. However, I had to face it.

M: It’s a light rain. Text 2 W: Excuse me, is there a shopping center nearby?
M: I’m afraid not. W: Ah...any market or store near here?

W: That’s a good idea. Text 4 M: Hi, Sally. Which club will you choose? W: I really like chess and poetry.
M: Well, I’m going to sign up for the debate club.

M: Doris, what are you doing? I can’t find Mom and Grandma. W: I am listening to music. Mom went to visit Lisa and Grandma is at church.

M: We can make an album with some pictures we’ve taken together. We’ll give it to them at the goodbye party. W: Sounds great! It’s much better than anything we could buy in a shop. Text 7 W: Good morning, sir. Can I help you? M: Yes, please. I left my bag at a luggage office two hours ago. But now I forgot how to get back there. W: From which entrance did you come in?

W: In all, I’m staying in the two countries for 10 days and leaving on May 17th.
M: What’s your travel plan?
W: I’ll stay in Paris for four days. My cousin’s working there. Then we will travel along the
coast for a few days. And the last three days, I’ll go to Berlin for the medical conference. M: Fine. Do you have much luggage?
W: It’s all here. One suitcase and a backpack. M: Good. Welcome to France and have a nice trip. W: Thank you. Text 9
Sir, let me explain what happened that day. I was on my way to the lake house for a day of fishing and just turned onto a wooded road. Suddenly, a large deer jumped in front of my brand-new car. Unfortunately, I didn’t have time to react, hitting the deer head-on, so I had to stop the car. There was blood all over the road and the deer appeared to be dead. I felt so bad for the poor creature. There was major damage to the front of my car, so I was unable to continue driving. I decided that I should take photos of the damage. I also took a photo of the dead deer as proof of what actually happened and so you will be able to calculate repair costs. Then, I called my wife and she came and picked me up. Text 10 M: Hello? W: Hi, good morning. This is Parrot Bay Travel Agency. M: Yes, can I help you?
W: I’m calling to ask a few questions about your most recent vacation to Sydney. Could I have a few minutes of your time? M: Sure, go ahead. W: Great, thanks. Was this your first visit to Sydney?
