第一节(共15小题,每小题2分,满分30分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。
A
Dear students,
Most of us get some exercise walking or riding our bikes to school, but that just isn?t enough. Why not get into shape by playing the most popular sport in the world — soccer? Two weeks ago, Mr. Goldstein, the physical education teacher, posted a notice about an exciting new soccer club (for Grades 3-5). To join, all you have to do is sign your name and be at school for the fun of it on Saturday mornings. You?ll make new friends and share information about famous teams and players
Mr. Goldstein will teach, so you?ll learn basic skills and new techniques(技巧)to improve your game. That?s good news because soccer is a game you can love three seasons a year. The only time you can?t play is when there is snow.
However, it is hard to believe that only nineteen people signed up for the new club. Maybe kids don?t want to give up their Saturday mornings. But if you think about how we spend Saturday mornings now, soccer looks good. Doing housework and watching TV are not as much fun as playing soccer with friends. If you didn?t sign up because you?ve never played soccer before, don?t worry. Beginners are welcome and Ms. Goldstein will give you more help. Just act now! The equipment is cheap. All you have to bring is your feet.

Clover, a three-year-old spirit bear, lives at the B.C. Wildlife Park near Kamloops, British Columbia, Canada. He lost his parents two years ago and was raised at a wildlife center. When he was set free into the wild, he broke into human camps looking for food. Wildlife experts tried to get him used to living on his own, but he continued to look for places where there were people. Finally the experts decided that he could not live in the wild. Since then, a total of $750,000 has been collected to create a habitat for Clover.
The habitat covers about three acres (英亩) of land and includes natural forest, two ponds connected by a small river and something else. It will add a platform and a walkway later this year so that people can see Clover and his habitat more closely. There will also be a center where people can learn more about spirit bears. Besides, a black bear will be moved into the habitat so Clover will not feel lonely.
Spirit bears are also called Kermode bears after Francis Kermode, who first studied them. Kermode discovered that a small number of black bears carry a gene(基因)for white fur. If a baby bear receives one of these genes from each parent, its fur will be a creamy white color.
There are about 1,200 bears who carry the gene for white fur, but only about 200 white Kermode bears in the world. Kermode bears are found only in British Columbia. (一) A long time ago, and still in some countries today, the dollar and penny did not even exist. In fact, trading a cow for two pigs is still the norm for many cultures. So how is it that we get to use paper and coins? The biggest challenge for ancient cultures was to have a system that would allow people to exchange products with each other. However, the problem came up when one person was in need of something immediately that they didn’t have a product to trade. For example, a farmer that needed wheat only had fruit to exchange but the fruit wasn’t ready to hand over for another two months. This is what started the idea of a “common currency (货币) ”. The farmer could buy what he needed with “currency” and just as important, the value of the goods he was exchanging was standardized. He did not have to worry about giving anything in return now or later; his transaction was complete. Thus “money” was born. Over time, each country has developed its own currency and something that might cost 1,000,000 lire(里拉) in one country might be 1 dollar in the US currency. Most countries also frequently use powerful political people as the “face” of their currency. The US currency is the best example of this. Can you name all the presidents that currently appear on not only paper money but also coins as well? The real excitement, however, is the future of how we buy things. People have started to use debit cards that allow you to pay using your bank account rather cash. That has given way to something called Mondex. Mondex allows you to “wave” your card past any special device that can read these cards. You no longer have to insert, swipe(刷) and then punch in numbers, which could cause security problems. . A. introduceB. explain what money was like in history C. tell us that there was no money long ago D. compare the difference between a cow and two pigs 2. The farmer had an idea of using currency when A. he would harvest his fruit C. he had a product to exchange D. he has nothing for what he needed 3. By saying “The US currency is the best example of this” in paragraph 3, the author probably means . A. Americans have a large amount of moneyB. political people in the US are very powerful C. the presidents appear on the money in the US D. people in the US admire the presidents very much A. keep you safeB. save you a large amount of money C. make you happy whenever you are bored D. help you trade safely and conveniently 5. What does this passage mainly talk about? A. The trade a long time ago. B. The history of the money. C. The uses of money in the world. D. The poor people in some countries. 体裁:说明文 关键词:currency 难度:★★★ 建议用时:8’

Some people have always known about the great finds at resale stores. The tough economy is bringing new shoppers to the secondhand market.
While Charlotte has outstanding secondhand stores offering high-end and sophisticated brands for women, most of their stock applies to adults. Plato’s Closet targets teens and those in their 20s.
Plato’s Closet, with stores in Matthews and the university area, sells clothes and accessories that are currently popular, at up to 70 percent off retail prices.
The two hottest brands, for buying and selling, are Hollister and Abercrombie & Fitch. Even though the offerings tend to young people, there are a variety of shoppers at Plato’s Closet, of varying ages. Women in their 30s, 40s and older could easily find a purse, jacket or piece of jewelry they like.
Customer Beth Gibbs, 52, who has three teenager daughters, said she used to shop at name-brand stores, but this year I’m shopping more in secondhand stores because of the economy.
If you’re selling
Unlike higher-end resale stores which usually work on consignment, Plato’s Closet buys on the spot.
Items can be gently used, but must be in very good condition.
Clothes should be less than two years old and styles should be the same as those still being sold at the mall.
There is no negotiation; prices are set companywide. If what you sell amounts to $30 or less, they’ll give you cash. More than that, you’ll get a visa cash card.
In demand: girls: jackets, shoes, pants, jewelry, purses.
Guys: long sleeves, T-shirts, jeans, shoes, jackets.
Secondhand success
Don’t get discouraged if you can’t find something on you first trip. Resale shops are always getting new inventory and change their styles with each season.
Be sure to check each piece carefully before buying—try it on, check zippers, buttons and snaps.
Price comparison
Jackets: New York & Company black blazer, $12; retail: $37
Pants: Express Editor-style pants, $12; retail: $69.90

For the past week, hundreds of firefighters have been battling a wildfire that started on March 26 in the mountains southwest of Denver, Colorado. The fire quickly burned through 4,140 acres of land— an area the size of more than 3,000 football fields. It killed three people, destroyed at least 25 houses, and forced hundreds of people to evacuate their homes.
Investigations have found that the fire was likely caused by a controlled burn started one week started one week earlier by the Colorado State Forest Service (CSFS).
A controlled burn is a fire ignited by professionals to clear the ground of built-up fuel — such as dead wood, thick layers of pine needles(松 叶 ), and overcrowded trees — that can cause dangerous wildfires. Hundreds of controlled burns have been safely managed in Colorado forests over the past few months.
Fire professionals take many measures to make sure that burns can be controlled. Before starting a burn, the professionals look carefully at weather forecasts, how close the fire will be to houses and roads, and other factors. They plan how they will ignite and contain the fire and arrange for resources such as fire trucks and firefighters to be present. CSFS officials say fire crews followed all safety procedures before starting the controlled burn near Denver on March 19. The fire died down four days later. But on March 26,high winds blew embers(余烬 ) onto unburned land, starting the deadly flame. Unusually warm temperatures and dry conditions helped it spread.
Fire crews now have the flame almost fully contained, and most families have been allowed to return to their homes. Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper has issued a temporary(暂时的 ) ban on controlled burns on state land and has called for a complete review of the rules for these types of fires.
1. In the first paragraph, the underlined word “evacuate” can be A. build C. leave D. watch
2. According to the passage, CSFS officials may agree that .
A. fire crews’ carelessness led to the fire
B. firefighters should be present when the burn was started
C. burning wood in the forest will be banned
D. the weather factor was blamed for the fire
B. the wildfire was an unexpected event
C. no measures were taken to control the burn
D. the wildfire has been completely put out
4. Where can the article probably appear?
A. In a TV guide
B. In a newspaper
C. In a science book
D. In a tour booklet

One day an ordinary dog appeared in the ticket office at Campiglia, a busy railroad station on Italy's main line. A ticket agent named Elvio greeted the strange dog in a friendly way, so the dog decided to stay. From that day on, the dog became Elvio's shadow and was named Lampo.
Lampo kept Elvio company inside the ticket office. When the weather was warm, he would enjoy himself in the sun on the train platform. When it was time for Elvio to return home on the train at night, Lampo ran after the train for a long way and then sadly gave up and went back to the station.
One night as Elvio was riding home on the train, he noticed that Lampo was lying at his feet. Afraid that the conductor would see the dog on the train and shout at him, Elvio pushed Lampo under a seat. Luckily, the conductor did not notice the dog. Lampo came home with Elvio and met his family. Then, after a short visit, Lampo boarded the last train and went back to the station. Lampo quickly learned all of the train schedules (时刻表). He would ride home from work with Elvio every night and
then back to the station alone. Every morning, Lampo arrived at Elvio's house in time to walk his young daughter, Mivna, to school. The faithful dog would then take another train to Campiglia to spend time with his master, then travel again to accompany Mivna home from school at 11:30.
Soon, Lampo began to take the trains all over Italy. Lampo became famous among the men who worked on the railroad, as his journeys became more frequent, complicated and mysterious. No one could explain why he traveled or how he always found the right train back to Campiglia. People decided that Lampo was a unique dog.
Some of the railroad officials were against Lampo's illegal travels. They were afraid he would bite a passenger or cause some other problems. Finally, the station master threatened to call the dogcatcher if Elvio didn' t get rid of the dog.
Elvio decided to put Lampo on a train going as far away as possible. Months went by and Lampo did not come back. Mivna missed him very much and prayed for his return. Finally one day, a sad, very thin, tired Lampo returned to Elvio's office. Everyone, even the stationmaster, was sorry about what had happened. From then on, Lampo was allowed to ride the train whenever he wanted. After seven
years, Lampo grew old, and he began to need Elvio's help to board the train.
One day Lampo was seen lying dead on the tracks. A year later, a life-sized statue of Lampo was set up at Campiglia station.
