People used to find it safe to keep their treasure and money in some

In Britain a few years ago, a writer wrote about some treasure that he had buried. He put clues in the story to help readers find it. Thousands of people hunted for the treasure. They dug holes all over Britain, hoping to find it.
One of the most popular adventure stories ever written is Robert Louis Stephenson's“Treasure
Island”, an exciting story about a young boy, Jim Hawkins, who is captured by pirates (海盗) and
later finds some buried treasure.
Then there is the true story about a man who had to travel overseas for a year. He did not
banks, so he buried his life savings in a park. Then he went away. On his return, he went trust
straight to the park. But the park was no longer there. In its place there was a huge building.
And then there was a woman who buried her savings, all in bank notes, in a waterproof(防水
的)bag. When she dug it up years later, there was nothing left. Worms and insects had eaten the bag and everything in it.
And of course, these are stories about people who bury things and either forget where they have buried them or lose the map.
Although it is true that people sometimes lose their money because a bank fails, banks are still the safest place to keep our savings and treasures.

Go originated more than 2,500 years ago in ancient China, and is one of the oldest board games played today. It is considered one of the most complex board games. It is played on a board made up of a grid (网格) of 19 by 19 squares. The game opens with players taking turns to place black and white playing pieces, known as “stones”, on the vacant intersections, known as the “points”(空白交叉点) of the board. The aim, as the translation of its name means, is to surround a larger total area of the board than your opponent (对手) by the end of the game.
The contest was held in Seoul, the capital of South Korea, and has attracted huge attention. The bigger your dream, the higher you reach. That is a lesson that the life of swimming hero Michael Phelps teaches. The 21-year-old man from the US realized his dream. of 7 golds in one Olympics set by Mark Spitz in 1972 and set 7 world records. Phelps has both the heart and the body to make his dream come true. He has a body particularly suited to swimming. He has a long, thin torso (躯干) with arms which span 201cm, though his height is 193cm, 8cm

Staying up late till midnight before an exam or an interview is not good for health. A recent research finds that sleep is important for things to be stored into the brain. Having a good night’s
sleep is necessary if you want to remember a new task within 30 minutes.
A recent research was published in the December issue of Nature Neuro-Science. It showed
that it was the act of sleep that was important for people to memorize more things.
“We think that getting that first night’s sleep starts the process of memory consolidation,”
said Robert, a sleep researcher at Harvard Medical School who conducted the latest study.
About one in every five people says that it is difficult to sleep for at least 8 hours a day. And not enough sleep affects their daily activities. The latest research work pay more attention to the
less well-understood side effect --- serious memory hurt. Volunteers in an experiment found it easier to finish the memory work if they were allowed to sleep that night. But for those who kept
awake, now matter how long they were in bed, the loss cannot be made up for.
After the experiment, the scientists concluded that enough sleep is necessary for good memories.

C. Listen to the passage and tell whether the following statements are true or false
Bats are the only flying mammals in the world. They can't see very well. It was long believed that all
bats are blind, and still in many places, we can often say "as blind as a bat".
Yet they have no trouble flying on the darkest nights and finding their way home very well. How can
bats fly and see at night? They fly by radar.
The bat's radar system works the same way as the one that ships and planes use. When a bat flies
through the air, he makes a high sound. It is too high for our ears to hear. If the sound hits things, it comes
back. The bat's ears receive the sound. In this way they are able to tell where the things are.
Bats go out to look for food at night. During the day-time they hang in some dark places. Some people
don't think the bats are good animals. In fact, they are useful animals.

Students often complain about the difficulty of remembering English vocabulary. My suggestion is that you focus on reciting words that are often used in daily communication. Some students are working on memorizing the entire dictionary. That is a very difficult and boring task. It could reduce your confidence in learning English and take the fun out of it.
Another point is that memorizing vocabulary should be related with daily reading. Remembering those words which you seldom use for a long time is difficult
for many students. It is better to read some articles and books in English to enlarge your vocabulary and make it solid. One good choice is to read English newspapers and magazines, such as Times, China Daily, and 21st Century. In that way you can understand how to use the words and expressions in context.
My final suggestion is to choose your own way of memorizing vocabulary. No matter which method you use, it helps if you keep in mind the important prefixes and suffixes.

What's Your View on Fast Food?
Fast food is becoming more and more popular in China, especially among children and teenagers. There are several reasons for its popularity. First, it is very convenient and saves a lot of time. Second, you can either eat it there or take it away. Third, the environment of fast food restaurants is both clean and comfortable. However, fast food is usually not a balanced diet and low in nutritional value. In my opinion, fast food is only a good choice when you are in a hurry and turn to it once in a while. It's good for people, especially children, to eat as little fast food as possible.

In Britain a few years ago, a writer wrote about some treasure that he had buried. He put clues in the story to help readers find it. Thousands of people hunted for the treasure. They dug holes all over Britain, hoping to find it.
One over the most popular adventure stories ever written is Robert Louise Stephenson’s “Treasure Island”,an exciting story about a young boy, Jim Hawkins, who is captured by pirates(海盗) and later finds some treasure.
Then there is the true story about a man who had to travel oversea for a year. He did not trust banks, so he buried all his life savings in a park. Then he went away. On his return, he went straight to the park. But the park was no longer there. In its pace there was a huge building.

People used to find it safe to keep their treasure
and money in some secret or unknown places.
They tried various ways as they could think out.
They buried(埋) treasure to stop other people
from taking it. They chose a quiet place, dug a
deep hole and buried the treasure in it. Then they made a map of where the treasure was or wrote down other clues that would help them or someone else to find it again. In Britain a few years ago, a writer wrote about some treasure that he had buried. He put clues in the story to help readers find it. Thousands of people hunted for the treasure. They dug holes all over Britain, hoping to find it.
One of the most popular adventure stories ever written is Robert Louis Stephenson’s“TreasureIsland”,an exciting story about a young boy, Jim Hawkins, who is captured by pirates(海盗) and later finds some buried treasure.
Then there is the true story about a man who had to travel overseas for a year. He did not trust banks, so he buried his life savings in a park. Then he went away. On his return, he went straight to the park. But the park was no longer there. In its place there was a huge building.
And then there was a woman who buried her savings, all in bank notes., in a waterproof(防水的) bag.
