Just north of the airport in Phoenix, in one of America?s most noisy and violent neighborhoods, if you listen closely, you can hear a chorus of small voices from a classroom in a white brick school building. Brenda Combs is leading her students in song. “When we wake up in the morning,” she sings in a passionatevoice, “we can brush our teeth … comb our hair … eat some food ... and get ready for a brand-new day.”
The kids in this summer class range in age from 5 to 12 and, like most pupils at Star Shine Academy — a school serving kindergarten through 12th grade — come from Phoenix?s poorest families. Some of their parents are drug addicts (瘾君子 ) ; others are homeless.
the blackboard, in her opinion, has achieved a kind of success that once would have seemed well
rest of the year, was recently listed in Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers. When she received her master?s degree in education from Grand Canyon University last spring, First Lady Laura Bush sent congratulations on her graduation. As Combs was being interviewed on CNN, the university?s CEO showed up with a surprise graduation present: a full scholarship (money to help pay for education) toward a PhD.
“Brenda is extremely gifted ,” says Star Shine Academy?s founder, Patricia McCarty. “I often think of how many people used to walk by her and say, ?She?s a throwaway.? ”
What makes Combs such an extraordinary educator of at-risk children — the kind whose students drop by later to thank her — may be the years she spent living on the streets as a
desperate crazy addict. She slept under bridges and searched through rubbish containers for breakfast. And she seldom used a comb or a toothbrush.
Combs, 45, likes to show teenage students her “before” photos, which portray a tired, untidy homeless girl with cold eyes. “I know what it?s like to want to get high,” she says, “to be hungry and abused. They trust me because I?ve been there.”
51. All the students who are taught by Brenda Combs are _________.
A. poor children B. homeless C. drug addicts D. 12 years old 52. Which of the following statements best supports the underlined sentence in Paragraph 2?

B. Combs received her master?s degree in ed ucation from Grand Canyon University last spring.
C. Combs was once homeless and spent years living on the streets as a desperate drug addict.
D. Combs was presented with a full scholarship for a PhD by the university?s CEO.
53. Combs teaches at-risk children in the violent neighborhood successfully mainly because _______.
A. the pupils are moved by her past experience
B. her own experience allows her to understand them
C. she is a master in education
D. she has been interviewed and has become famous
54. Wha t?s the best title of the passage?
A. Brenda Combs — a drug addict. B. An extraordinary educator.
C. From a drug addict to a successful teacher. D. I succeed finally.

By 1990, according to a World Wildlife Fund report, only about 4, 500 tigers were still alive throughout the world — half of them in India. Mr. Foresters, who followed and counted tiger footprints, judged that in May 1972 only about 1,800 tigers existed in India. Project Tiger supported by W .W.F. was immediately started. Nine tiger reserves were created, with armed guards protecting them.
The project provided opportunities for researchers from India and abroad to study tigers in the protecting areas and gather formerly unavailable information about their habits. Studies show that a male tiger may control a hunting territory (领土 ) of between 10 and 20sq. kms, depending on its age, size and strength.
The territory of a male includes the smaller areas of three or four tigresses. A tiger marks the boundaries of its area by spraying urine (尿 ) and other bodily liquids on bushes. But it tries to avoid territorial fights, being guided by the clear body smell of other tigers. Tigers fight to death only when a tigress is defending her young or when a tiger is guarding a tigress from the attentions of other males.
The popular mental picture of the tiger is that of a merciless and unconquerable hunter. But studies show that it catches only one of 20 animals it tries to attack.
Fears have recently developed that Project Tiger has been too successful. It has enabled the tiger population to double (by mid-80's) but India's human population has also grown out of control. At present it is 750 million and likely to be 900 million by the end of the century. The land problem is becoming serious and many rural people feel bitter about the fact that some rich forests are reserved for tigers. A growing number of attacks by tigers on man has added to the hatred (a
very strong feeling of dislike).
55. The final aim of Project Tiger is to ________.
A. study the growth rate of tigers B. improve the breeding (
A. a tigress never attacks until attacked
B. the tigress is not as fierce as the tiger
C. a tiger usually fights another tiger to defend its own territory
D. the tiger is not a good hunter as is commonly described
57. Some people are afraid that Project Tiger ________.
A. has been carried too far B. has failed to achieve its goal
C. has not received enough attention D. is not worth the money spent on it 58. The author seems ________.
A. to be interested in Project Tiger
B. to have a matter-of-fact attitude towards Project Tiger
C. to have an unfriendly attitude towards Project Tiger
D. to be satisfied with Project Tiger

Researchers believe that the aroma of roasted (烘培 ) coffee beans can soothe (舒缓 ) frayed (紧张的 ) nerves—and that it could be enough to reduce the effects of a poor night?s sleep on the brain.
They said that chemicals removed from coffee and pumped into the air may one day be used as a way of refreshing tired people.
Scientists in Tsukuba, Japan, kept 16 laboratory rats awake for 24 hours, by keeping them in a cage filled with an inch of water, then exposed half of them to the smell of roasted coffee. After ta king samples of the rats? brains, they found that the smell of coffee improved the activity of key genes that help cell survival in the body and reduce anxiety, New Scientist magazine reports.
Professor Yoshinori Masuo, who led the study in Tsukuba, Japan, said that when people drink coffee to stay up all night, just the smell of the coffee could reduce some of the stress caused by sleeplessness.
He added: “Is it better for US to smell coffee bean aroma than to drink coffee, or would any other food-related aroma produce similar effects?Further studies are needed.??

Having too much confidence is not good. And now, a new study has proved this by finding that overconfident teenage students can stunt crucial (决定性的) reading skills.
The study shows a clear connection between overconfident students and low reading comprehension.
“While some self-confidence is helpful, overconfident 15-year-olds are often below-average (平均水平 ) readers in all 34 countries we studied, ” says Ming Ming Chiu, the lead author of the study.
“In contrast, under-confident 15-year-olds are more likely to be above-average readers in all 34 countries, ”the expert added.
The difference lies in a student?s ability to exactly assess (估计 ) and evaluate his or her own reading level, according to Chiu. Those who can accurately assesstheir strengths and weaknesses are usually in a better position to identify realistic goals and achieve them.
“If an overconfident student chooses a book that is too hard— such as The Lord of the Rings rather than Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone— he or she might stop reading after a few pages and let it sit on a bookshelf,”says Chiu.
“In contrast, a more self-aware student is more likely to finish an easier book and continue reading more books, ”the expert added.
67. The underlined word “stunt” in Paragraph 1 can be replaced by .
A. improve B. help C. prevent D. find
68. Which of the following is true?

D. Overconfident 15-year-olds are often above-average readers.
69. People who can exactly assess their strengths and weaknesses can .

The problem you are facing is common among us teenagers. However, it should be wise not to do anything that may hurt your mother? s feelings. Here are a few suggestions.
First, it?s advisable to talk more with your mom. Heart to heart talks help you understand each other better. They are also opportunities to let her know your ideas and attitudes toward many things.
Second, you should learn to do your own things well, proving to your mom that you are already a “Grown -up”. It?s even better if you could share more of the housework, such as cleaning, washing and cooking. D 篇:

If you‘re planning on traveling, there are a few simple rules about how to make life easier both before and after your journey.
First of all, always check and double-check departure (起程 ) time. It is amazing how few people really do this carefully. Once I arrived at the airport a few minutes after ten. My secretary had got the ticket for me and I thought she had said that the plane left at 10:50. When I arrived at the airport, the clerk at the departure desk told me that my flight was closed. Therefore, I had to wait three hours for the next one and missed an important meeting.
The second rule is to remember that even in this age of credit cards, it is still important to have at least a little of the local currency (货币 ) with you when you arrive in a country. This can be necessary if you are flying to a place few tourists normally visit. A few years ago I was sent to Tulsa, Oklahoma. I flew there from London via (经

Frank Woolworth was born in Rodman, New York, in 1852. His family were very poor farmers, and there was never enough to eat. Frank decided he did not want to be a farmer. He took a short business course, and went to work as a salesman in a large city.
Woolworth realized he had a natural skill for showing goods to attract people‘s interest, but he soon learned something more important. One day his boss told him to sell some odds and ends (小商品 ) for as much as he could get. Frank put all these things on one table with a sign which said FIVE CENTS EACH. People fought and pushed to buy the things and the table was soon cleared.
Soon afterwards, Woolworth opened his own store, selling goods at five and ten cents. But he had another lesson to learn before he became successful. That is, if you want to make money by selling low-price goods, you have to buy them in large quantities directly form the factories. Once, for example, Woolworth went to Germany and placed an order for knives. The order was so large that the factory had to keep running 24 hours a day for a whole year. In this way, the price of the knives was cut down by half.
By 1919, Woolworth had over 1000 stores in the US and Canada, and opened his first store in London. He made many millions and his name became famous throughout the world. He always run his business according to strict rules, of which the most important was: ― THE CUSTOMER IS ALWAYS RIGHT.‖

An earthquake happens when two plates rub (碰撞 ) together. The earth plates travel in different directions and at different speeds. If one plate is slowly forced underneath the other, pressure builds up until the plates break apart. This process causes the ground to move. It is an earthquake. In other words, earthquakes are the shaking of the earth‘s surface caused by the earth‘s rocky outer layer as a result of the energy stored within the earth. The strain within the rocks is suddenly released (释放 ). The damage an earthquake causes depends on where it is and the time it is happening. If an unpopulated region is struck, there will be low loss of life or property. If it hits a large city, there may be many injuries and much destruction. Many of the areas at risk are largely populated now. Major earthquakes hitting those areas today could produce terrible damage.
Actually, there are several million small earthquakes every year. Large earthquakes such as the 1964 Alaskan quake that measured 9.2 on the Richter scale, cause millions of dollars in damage. In the last 500 years, millions of people have been killed by earth-quakes around the world — including 240,000 in the 1976 Tangshan earthquake in China.
A 60-second or less earthquake can cause devastation that continues for years after the first tremor (小震 ). In 1972, a series of severe earthquakes struck Managua, Nicaragua. Fifteen years later, the city still looked the way it had a week after the earthquake hit, because the country did not have the necessary money to rebuild it. fires and floods that often the greatest damage occurs. In the 1906 earthquake, it was the fires caused after it that did the majority of the damage. An earthquake can also destroy dams high above a city or valleys, causing floods to sweep down and sweep away everything in their path.

B. The 1976 Tangshan earthquake.
C. The 1972 Managua earthquake.

Say you are a 17th century construction worker who‘s worked long and hard to build a splendid tower for the dead wife of your emperor.
Now say that the emperor orders your fingertips cut off so you can never build another one. Yes, that is the Taj Mahal, one of the most famous buildings in the world. And the tale behind the construction is just as impressive (印象深刻的) as the building itself.

And as Mumtaz lay dying, she asked Jehan to build a lasting memorial(纪念 物) to celebrate their love.
When the heartbroken Jehan ap peared eight days after his wife‘s death, his people were shocked to see that his coal-black hair had turned snow-white.
Putting away his sadness, Jehan ordered his wife‘s dying wish carried out. More than 20, 000 workers labored nearly 22 years to complete the construction. In 1653, Jehan placed Mumtaz‘s remains in the center under the building.
And then, son number five, Aurangzeb, murdered his brothers and took over the power from his aging father. Jehan lived the rest of his days-eight years, to be exact
-imprisoned not far from the Taj Mahal. Jehan was only allowed to climb onto the top of his prison to see the timeless treasure from a distance. But never again would he be allowed to visit it-until he was buried next to his wife.

“Mind your own business,”we’re told. “Don’t talk about others behind their backs.”The problem with this advice is that, not only is it unrealistic, it’s also counter productive(起反用的) . Common sense holds that gossip (言
Gossip is a way for people to let you know the limits of social behavior. “If you move into a community and your neighbor tells you how the former homeowner never dealt with his rubbish properly , his gossip is letting you in on something,”says Dr. Ralph Rosnow of Temple University. “Gossip says:these are the boundaries and you are crossing them . You’re not
and you’d better get back in line.”Seen this way, gossip is a way to communicate criticism without conflict (冲突) , giving you a chance to change your behavior without losing face.
On the other hand, what about ill-willed gossip, the kind that puts other people down? Gossip is hearing something we like about someone we don’t and, in nearly every country in the world, gossip magazines have huge numbers of readers. According to researchers, however, this kind of
gossip also has a good side because it helps us put our own problems in perspective(正确地) .“If we read bad news about well-known people, or get the frightful details of our neighbors` bad situation over a cup of coffee, our own problems begins to pale in comparison,”says Dr. Jack Levin of Northeastern University.
However, that doesn’t mean that gossip is necessarily a good thing , either. Researchers found that people who gossip a lot tend to feel like they’re under a lot of stress. This might be because while they’re busy talking about other people, they’re also busy thinking what other people are saying about them.
48. What is the purpose of the text?
A. To encourage us to spread gossip about others.
B. To prevent us from spreading gossip about others
C. To make a comparison between good gossip and bad gossip
D. To recognize certain positive(积极地,肯定的) functions of gossip

Have you ever wondered why birds sing? Maybe you thought that they were just happy. After all, you probably sing or whistle when you are happy.
Some scientists believe that birds do sing some of time just because they are happy. However, they sing most of the time for a very different reason. Their singing is actually a warning to other birds to stay out of their territory.
Do you know what a “territory” is? A territory is an area that an animal, usually the male, claims as its own. Only he and his family are welcome there. No other families of the same species(物种 ) are welcome. Your yard and house are your territory where only your family and friends are welcome. If a stranger should enter your territory and threaten you, you might shout. Probably this would be enough to frighten him away.
If so, you have actually scared the stranger away without having to fight him. A bird does the same thing. But he expects an outsider almost any time, especially at nesting(筑巢 ) season. So he
is screaming all the time, whether he can see an outsider or not. This screaming is what we call a bird’s song, and it is usually enough to keep an outsider away.
Birds sing loudest in the spring when they are trying to attract a mate and warn others not to enter the territory of theirs.
You can see that birds have a language all their own. Most of it has to do with attracting mates and setting up territories.
52. Some scientists believe that most of the time birds singing is actually ______.
A. an expression of happiness B. a way of warning
C. an expression of anger D. a way of greeting
53. What is a bird’s “territory”?
A. A place where families of other species are not accepted.
B. A place where a bird may shout at the top of its voice.
C. An area for which birds fight against each other.
D. An area which a bird considers to be its own.
54. Why do birds keep on singing at nesting season?
A. Because they want to invite more friends.
B. Because their singing helps frighten outsiders away.
C. Because they want to find outsiders around.
D. Because their singing helps get rid of their fears.
55. How does the writer explain birds’ singing?
A. By comparing birds with human beings.
B. By reporting experiment results.
C. By describing birds’ daily life.
D. By telling a bird’s story.

书面表达
I’m a senior student. I like English very much. Besides attending English lessons at school, I often go to the English Corner in the park near my home on Saturday morning. It was set up two years ago. Many high school students gather there. Sometimes some college students and even foreign friends are present at the English Corner. There, we practise our spoken English, talk about what we are interested in, exchange our experience in learning English and so on. I’ve learned a lot. I have greatly improved myself in English since I visited it. It is really a good help to me.
