Have you ever had trouble sleeping in a new place?
Lots of people do. And now researchers from Brown University in Rhode Island think they know why. They found that one-half of the brain “remain more awake” than the other half when people are trying to sleep in a new place.
The sleep findings were reported in Current Biology by Brown University. In their report, the researchers said many people report they have a harder time sleeping the first night at a hotel or other places outside their home. They call it “first -night influence”.“In Japan they say,?If you change your bed, you can?t sleep,?”said Yuka Sasaki, one of the report?s writers. “You don?t sleep very well in a new place. We all know about it.”
The researchers measured brain waves for 35 volunteers over two nights in a laboratory. The two nights were a week apart. They found during the first night the left half of the brain was more active than the right half. This was during the first deep-sleep period, the researchers said.
Sasaki said a lot of questions remain.
Researchers did not keep measuring brain waves all night long. So, they don?t know if the left half keeps “watch” all night, or whether it “works in shifts with the right half later in the night”. They also do not know why the brain activity, at least during the first period of deep sleep, is always on the left half.
For some, the research may be calming. It is good to know that our brain is “looking out for us” in a new place. But it may not help with sleep. That brain activity, at least according to this new research, makes it harder to get the sleep people need to wake up well rested in the morning.
48. How many times did the researchers measure brain waves for 35 volunteers?
A. Once. B. Twice. C. Three times. D. Four times.
49. The researchers found _____ during the first deep-sleep period.
A. the brain waves remained the same
B. the brain activity helped with sleep
C. the right half of the brain kept “watch”
D. the left half of the brain was more active
50. The underlined word “calming” has the closest meaning to “_____”.
A. pleasing B. different C. serious D. strange
51. What is the passage mainly about?
A. What we will have to do to sleep well.
B. How researchers measure brain waves.
5
C. Who doesn?t sleep well in a new place.
D. Why it?s harder to sleep in a new place.
D
Sometimes people are not clear about what kind of food is healthy, and what kind of food may do harm to our health. The USDA has prepared a food guide to help people learn about which kind of food is the healthiest to eat. The food guide describes six main food groups: meat (like fish and chicken), dairy (like milk and cheese), grains (like bread and rice), fruit and vegetables. The last group is fats and sweets. The USDA also suggests how much of each food group is healthy to eat daily. Though this guide was prepared by the US government, it is very useful for people all over the world.
As a result of years of study, we know that too much animal fat is bad for our health. For example, Americans eat a lot of meat and only a small amount of grains, fruit and vegetables. Because of the way they eat, they have a high rate of cancer and heart disease. In Japan, people eat large amounts of grains and very little meat. The Japanese also have a very low rate of cancer and heart disease. The Japanese live longer than anyone else in the world. However, when Japanese people move to the US, the rate of heart disease and cancer goes up as their eating habit changes. And as hamburgers, ice creams and other high-fat foods become popular in Japan, the rate of heart disease and cancer is going up there as well. People are also eating more meat and dairy food in other countries, in which the disease rate is going up along with the change of the way people eat. Doctors everywhere suggest people eat more grains, fruit and vegetables and less meat and dairy food.
Eating healthily is important for children as well as their parents. When parents have poor eating habits, their children usually do, too. After all, children eat in the same way as their parents. When parents eat healthy food, the children will learn to enjoy it, too. Then they will develop good eating habits. Doctors suggest parents give their children healthier food such as fruit, vegetables and juice.
Everyone wants to live a long, healthy life. We know that the food we eat affects us in different ways. For example, doctors believe that fruit and vegetables can really protect people from many different diseases. On the other hand, animal fat can cause diseases. We can change our eating habits now and enjoy many years of healthy living.
52. What is the USDA in the passage?
A. A group of doctors in the US. B. An office of the US government.
C. A report on diseases in the US. D. An order given by the US President.
53. Doctors suggest us eating ____ grains, fruit and vegetables and ___ meat and dairy food.

八、阅读短文,根据短文内容回答问题。
Most people hope to have a memory which helps them succeed in study, work and life. Can memory be improved? Luckily, hundreds of studies in the past 50 years have already given us a definite answer.
A healthy lifestyle keeps your brain young and memory sharp. First of all, it is necessary to have a healthy diet. Eating more food rich in B vitamins and Vitamin E, such as vegetables and lean meat, helps you have a better memory. Doing exercise can keep your brain alive, too. Proper exercise provides much needed oxygen for the brain. Running ,riding a bike ,swimming and even walking two or three times a week are helpful. Moreover, getting enough sleep is important. Only when your brain gets a good rest, can it work well. The healthier your lifestyle is, the better your memory will become, but do not expect a sudden change---it takes a long time to make a difference.
Memory skills help you remember things better. The following three are the most widely used. Chunking is a way of remembering a piece of information by cutting it into smaller ones. For example, to memorize a ten--digit telephone number 2127983630,you can divide the digits into three groups: first 212,then 798,and lastly 3630.This method is far more effective than remembering a string of 10 digits. Organization means organizing information into groups of the the same kind. For example, trees, grass and flowers are plants; tigers, panadas, horses and cows are animals. Imagery is remembering newly learnt information by using your imagination and connecting it with something that you are familiar with.
However, memory skills will hardly work if you don?t understand the information. What?s more, only a regular review can make the memory last long. That is why students are always advised to go over what they have learnt after one day and then after three days, and then use it as regularly as possible.
Human brains are like muscles that need nutrients(养分, 营养物) and exercise to become stronger. If you make a few lifestyle change and try some memory skills, you can certainly improve your memory.
61. Can our memories be improved?
62. How many ways of keeping a healthy lifestyle are mentioned in the passage?
63. What can help you remember things better?
64. Why should we review what we?ve learnt?
65. What have you learned from the passage?

A Special Lesson
When I was a foreign teacher in China, every day I taught English to my students
and they taught me about China. One day the topic turned to saying “I love you”. I was shocked (震惊) to learn that not one of my students has said this to their mothers, nor had their mothers said it to them.
“Does your mother love you?” “Of course,” they answered. “How do you know?” was my logical question. They responded that their moms cooked and always told them what they were doing wrong to show their caring. I was stunned (使目瞪口呆). So mom?s cooking and criticizing read out as “I love you”.
“Then do you say ?I love you? to her?” They agreed that getting good grades, followed by good jobs would be how they showed their love.
I come from a culture where most people are expressive enough, so I repeated these questions in classes over time. Gradually, I began to get different responses. Some of them had exchanged those sentiments with their moms.
One of my favorite stories of change came from a girl. When she came home from university, her mother met her at the door and hugged her. This had never happened before, but her mom said, “Now that you have gone, I have more time to myself. I noticed that in some places mothers and children hug each other and I decided it was a good idea and that I would begin hugging you.”
In my family we all say “I love you” a lot. While it is true that we often say the words without having great depth of feelings at that moment, it is almost like a blessing we give each other. Those three words carry a world of meaning, even when said as a greeting, but most especially if they are the last words we say to or hear from those we love.
45.The foreign teacher _________.
A .comes from America
C .is expressive enough B .is a young woman D .knows much about China
46.Why was the foreign teacher shocked?
A. Because her students say "I love you" to her.
B. Because the students? mums don't love them.
C. Because the students don?t know the meaning of “I love you”.
D. Because the students and their mums didn?t say “I love you” to each other.
47.In paragraph 5, what?s the real meaning of the mom's hugging?
A .She is meeting her daughter at the door.
B .She loves her daughter and misses her.
C .She is glad that she has more time to herself.
D .She finds it interesting to hug her daughter.
48.What's the main idea of the passage?
A .Say “I love you” more to your family .
B .Say “I love you” a lot to Chinese people.
C .Say “I love you” as a greeting to others.
D .Say “I love you” without great depth of feelings.

Koala Joey
Far away in Australia, a koala sits high in a eucalyptus tree. She grips a branch with the rough pads and sharp claws on her paws. In her pouch (小袋) she hides something special—her baby.
At birth the baby koala, called a joey, does not
look like his furry mom. He is pink and bald(无毛的)
and as small as a jellybean. Although he cannot see, he
moves his legs and crawls. He smells milk and, without
any help, starts to feel his way to his mother?s pouch.
Five minutes later he slips (滑) inside.
Inside the pouch, the joey drinks his mother?s milk
and grows. His eyes open. His ears form, and he hears
his mother?s calls. Soon thick fur covers his body. By the time the joey is ready to explore the world, he looks like his mother.
At five months old, the joey peers out of his pouch.
He eats a special soft food from his mother called pap.
When the joey eats pap, he gets bacteria(细菌)from his
mother?s stomach in his tummy too. He will need the
bacteria to eat eucalyptus leaves, like grownup koalas do.
In another month, the joey leaves the pouch for the
first time. He clings(贴着)to his mother?s belly while she
climbs in the treetops. By the time he is eight months old,
the joey no longer fits in his mother?s pouch. But he still
drinks her milk.
Now, for a few hours each night, the joey climbs on his mother?s back for a ride. While riding piggyback, he reaches for eucalyptus leaves. Just like mom, he nips (咬) off leaves and chews them. The leaves have plenty of water in them, so koalas rarely
go to the ground for a drink. When the joey is about one year old, his piggyback days are over. Now he climbs to the treetops by himself. On each of his front paws, he has two thumbs opposite his three fingers. He can grip branches and grab leaves.
The young koala spends more and more time away from his mother. He no longer drinks her milk. He dozes (打瞌睡,打盹) alone on tree branches. Soon he will move to another tree and live on his own.
49.When a joey is eight months old, it can _________.
A. eats a food called pap B. rides on his mother?s back
C. sleeps on tree branches D. clings to his mother?s belly
50. A joey stops drinking its mother?s milk when it is about_______.
A. one year old B. six months old C. eight months old D. five months old
51. Paragraph 2 is mainly about_________.
A. the name of a baby koala B. what a newborn koala is like
C. the size of a baby koala D. what kind of fur a newborn koala has
52. The author most likely wrote this passage to________.
A. introduce readers about baby koalas
B. tell a funny story about a baby koala
C. encourage people to protect baby koalas
D. compare a baby koala to other baby animals

Biting could be worrying
IT makes our fingers look ugly. It ?s dirty. It could hurt a lot. But many people just can?t stop doing it: biting their nails.
Up to 45 percent of teenagers in the UK bite their nails, the
BBC reported. There are also many famous nail biters, including
ex-British Prime Minister Gordon Brown and American singer
Britney Spears.
There?s nothing wrong with biting nails to keep them tidy.
But it could get out of control.
Some people bite a nail not because it?s too long, but because they are driving, reading, feeling stressed out, or just have nothing else to do.
The same could happen to skin picking and hair pulling. A normal behavior could become “pathological ”(病态的) , as experts say.
In 2013, the American Psychiatric Association labeled (把??列为) nail biting as an People with this disorder may wash their hands too many times or have to line up their shoes in a certain way.
These behaviors have a lot in common. OCD is doing something normal and healthy too much, NPR reported.
But nail biting is different from other OCD behaviors in at least one way.
“In OCD, the behavior is really unwanted,” Carol Mathews, a psychiatrist(精神病医生)at the University of California, San Francisco, told NPR. People with OCD don?t want to wash their hands over and over again. There is no fun in it. They just fear that if they don?t do something, something else that?s very bad will happen to them.
But nail biters enjoy it.
“It?s rewarding. When you get the right nail, it feels good,” said Mathews.
Therefore some people argue that most nail biters are not having a problem as serious as a mental (心理的) disorder.
But anyway, it?s still a bad habit. So what can we do to stop it?
Since most people bite nails as a way of relieving (缓解) stress, finding another way to relieve that stress could be useful, suggested Rochelle Torgerson, a doctor at the Mayo Clinic in the US. Try playing with your pen instead.
Besides, nail biters feel the urge (刺激,冲动) to bite if they find a small imperfect part of the nail, said Mathews. So always keep your nails in good shape.

There are many benefits of reading books.
Unfortunately, in this day and age, not a lot of people
take the time to read them anymore. But that doesn't
change the fact that you're missing out on a lot of wonderful benefits! Read on to learn the various benefits of reading books!
● It Feeds Your Mind.
Obviously, reading books provides you with new knowledge. Whenever you read something, you learn new information that you otherwise would not have known.
It can be a fact about history or a theory you did not know existed. If you want to learn new words in particular, reading books is a great way to enrich your vocabulary. ● It Keeps Your Brain In Shape.
Reading also keeps your mind in good condition. Similar to solving puzzles, reading books allows your mind to practice its processing skills.
Going without books for too long will turn your mind to mush (玉米面粥). I'm not kidding! Why do you think they call television the boob tube?
● It Develops Your Critical Thinking Skills.
One of the primary benefits of reading books is its ability to develop your critical thinking skills. Reading mystery novels, for example, sharpens (使敏锐) your mind. Whenever you are faced with a similar problem in real life, your mind is now able to put its mystery-solving prowess to a test.
● It Makes You More Articulate.
There's nothing quite like reading books to help you become a better conversationalist. Seeing how words are used (and how sentences are structured) with your own eyes helps you commit the information to memory better than by listening to a teacher discuss the points in class.
● It Is Easy To Get To.
One of the great benefits of reading books is that the information in it can be read over and over again. When you're following a recipe, for example, reading a cookbook allows you the luxury(享受)of reviewing the processes and the ingredients whenever you need to.
These are just some of the wonderful benefits of reading books. Why don?t you drop by the bookstore or library and pick a book up? If you can?t even go outside, you can download free e-books on line and read them on your computer.

62.How many benefits does the writer mention?
63.Why does reading books feed our mind?

I would be a lip-syncher. I could only mouth the words, but no sound must be uttered(发出声 ).

“ Well, where will I hide the foil?”
“ My hat! ” said Aunt Dolly. “ I ’ ll hide it in my hat. I ’ ll sit in the front row. Remember, not a single word to anyone.”
I had a voice during the unforgettable Christmas perform. With my eyes firmly on her hat, the fact that none present could hear my voice didn ’ t matter. My silent singing was for God’ s alone.

You may have been told before not to be afraid of anything. Fear is often associated with weakness. Fear is something to be avoided.
But that’ s not true, according to Time For Kids magazine. Fear can be good for us.
Fear tells us about danger. Without fear, we wouldn’ t know to run away from a tiger or step back from a cliff (悬崖 ).
In a study published in the Justice Quarterly journal in August, researchers from Michigan State University said that a healthy fear of crime keeps teenagers away from potentially dangerous people, places, and activities.
Fear makes us jump, scream and sweat. But interestingly, sometimes we make ourselves feel fear on purpose. Think about scary(可怕的) books and movies, and also the long lines for a scary roller coaster ride.
Margee Kerr, a US sociologist, explained why to Time For Kids.
Fear fills our brain with healthy chemical substances (化学物质 ), especially endorphins (内啡肽 ) and dopamine (多巴胺 ), and these things create feelings of happiness and excite us, according to Kerr.
In addition, when you ’ re scared, your body produces a chemical which helps people each other.
“ Watch people walking out of a haunted house, and you’ ll see lots of smiles and high fives,” Kerr told Time For Kids. That also explains why schools and companies organize challenging trips and physical activities to build up team spirit.
People experience and deal with fear in different ways. If you happen to be a “ coward ” who gets scared easily, don ’ t worry. There is some evidence that being scared can help a person manage stressful situations.
Kerr said that things like giving a report in front of your class or performing in a school play help build a sort of endurance (忍耐力 ) to fear that makes us more confident.
“ You become more comfortable with the physical experience of fear, and so you ’ re better able to work through it during tense situations,” said Kerr.
So learn to love your fear. It only grows when we forget how helpful our fear is trying to be.
52. What is the passage mainly about?
A. People’ s misunderstandings about fear.
B. Different ways to deal with fear.
C. The benefits fear brings us.
D. A new study about fear.
53. Why is a scary roller coaster ride helpful to people according to the passage?
A. It improves people’ s ability to survive in the modern world.
B. It makes people less cowardly and more confident in life.
C. It causes the brain to produce chemicals that make people happy and excited.
D. It teaches people how to keep away from things that could be dangerous.
54. The underlined part “ bond with” in Paragraph 8 probably means ______.
A. get closer to B. fight against
C. pay attention to D. be more careful with
55. What is the right attitude toward fear according to the passage?

Jack Johnson is one of the most popular singer-song
writers in the world. He was born on May 18, 1975 in Hawaii,
America. Being the son of a famous surfer, Jack naturally has
an interest in surfing. Most of his life lessons were learned in
the water. At the age of 17, Jack entered the finals(决赛 ) of

competition. Everyone thought Jack would become a
professional surfer like his father. Unluckily, one month later,
he had a deadly accident while surfing , and was seriously
hurt.
Life is like a revolving(旋转的) door. When it closes,
it also opens. Jack started to practice playing the guitar and writing songs when he
was staying in hospital. At first, his father thought Jack only did it for fun, but soon he was surprised at the great progress his son had made.
When studying in the university, Jack didn’ t stop practicing his guitar skills. He played the guitar for school parties. He wrote songs and sang for his teachers and friends. They liked his songs. His first music album(唱片集 ) Brushfire Fairytales came out in 2001. It was a great success. His second album, On and On, was much like his first one. They were filled with sweet, easy-going songs that everybody liked all over the world.
Jack had five albums by 2010 and more than 15 million CDs of them were sold. His music doesn’ t fit into any of the popular music styles like pop, R&B or hip-hop. It is more like folk music, which is played with a guitar and beautiful voice. When listening to his songs, you feel like lying on the beach enjoying the warm sunshine. Jack is a talent, though he himself says he is only a surfer who loves music. In his songs we can find his secret of success: Whatever happens in our lives, we have to accept it and do the best we can.

My special friend
I have a special friend. Her English name is Amy. And I want to thank her for what she has done for me.
When I was in Grade 7, we studied in the same class. At first, I was not good at English. Because of that, I was very sad. Amy did well in English at that time. So she often helped me with my English in our spare time. With her help, my English improved so much that I kept up with my class finally. I was very glad that I could not only speak English to my classmates and teacher fluently but also understand everything they said!
This is my special friend, Amy, someone who would not only have fun with me but also help me when I need it. I am glad to have this special friend.

A desert is a very dry land where there is hardly any rain. In the day, it can be so hot that you could fry an egg on the ground. But during the night it is sometimes so cold that water would turn into ice.
Many desserts are covered in sand. But some have mountains, rocks, or lakes that have dried up in the heat. The Great American Dessert has cliffs (悬崖) that have been made into amazing and beautiful shapes by the wind. The Sahara Desert in Africa is mostly sand. The Australian Desert has red sand.
Sometimes it does not rain for a whole year in the desert. But there is water deep under the ground and some plants have roots that go very deep to find it. Other plants have roots that spread out a long way so they can suck up the rain as soon
5
as it falls.
One desert plant is the cactus, which has long, spreading roots. The cactus stores water inside its hard skin. This skin
protects it from heat and cold.
Camels are a bit like cactus plants! They store water, too—inside their bodies. They have special fur which protects them from the sun during the day and keeps them warm at night.
Some other animals live in deserts, too. They have to be very good at seeing and hearing because most of them only come out at night. This is why many desert animals have extra big eyes or ears.
A desert fox has bigger ears than a normal fox. A gerbil (沙鼠)has huge eye, so that it can see at night. It stays cool in the day by staying underground, like most desert animals.
Some people live in the desert but they always make their homes near an oasis. An oasis is where water comes from an underground river. Near an oasis, people can grow lots of plants and keep animals.
Life is hard in the desert, for people, animals and plants. But desert people like to live there.
53.A desert is very dry because__________.
A. it is sandy B. there is so little rain C. the wind is strong
D. there is no water deep under the ground
54. What does the underlined phrase “suck up” mean_________?

Napoga is a 12-year-old girl in Ghana (加纳), Africa. It is hard for her family to get clean water. Every morning, she leaves home at half past five to get clean water for her family in a village far away. It takes her six
hours to get enough clean water for daily cooking and drinking. She has no time to go to school or to play with her friends. Millions of people in the world are like Napoga. They can’t get enough clean water to keep healthy.
Earth Day is April 22. But on all other days, we must also remember it. The water we use is the most important natural resource on the earth.
Water covers 70% of the earth’s surface. But most of that is sea water. We can’t use it for very many things. Fresh water covers only 1% of the earth’s surface.
You probably feel lucky that your life isn’t as hard as Napoga’s. But that doesn’t mean you don’t have to worry about water. We all face serious water problems. One of them is water pollution. All kinds of things from cars, factories, farms and homes make our rivers, lakes, and oceans dirty. Polluted water is very bad for people to drink. And dirty water is bad for fish, too. Now, 34% of all kinds of fish are dying out.
How do cars and factories make our water dirty? First, they pollute the air. Then, when it rains, the rain water comes down and makes our drinking water dirty. Dirty rain, called acid rain (酸雨), is also bad for plants, animals and buildings.
Scientists say that in 30 years, more than half of the people in the world won’t have enough clean water. We have to learn how to save more water for ourselves and our children. Here is some advice for saving water:
?Turn off the water while you brush your teeth. You can save as much as 450 liters each month.
?Leaky taps (漏水的龙头) waste a lot of water. Fix them right away!
?You can easily cut your 10-minute showers in half—and you’ll be just as clean.
?When you wash dishes, don’t let the water run.
?Only wash clothes when you have a lot to wash. If your washing machine isn’t full, you’re wasting water!
56. Every morning Napoga went to get clean water _______.

C. after she finished school D. after she played with her friends

“I sometimes get up at three or four in the morning and I surf the net.”
“I often check my e-mail forty times a day.”
“I often spend more than three hours during one time on the net.”
“I spend more time in chat rooms than with my ‘real-1ife’ friends.”
Do you know any people like these? They are part of a new addiction(瘾) called Internet addiction.
Internet addicts spend at least thirty to forty hours online every week. The use of the Internet can be an
addiction like drug use. People lose control of the time they spend on the Internet.
For example, one college student was missing for several days. His friends were worried, and they called
the police. The police found the student in the computer lab: he was surfing the net for several days straight.
Studies show that about 6 to 10% of Internet users become addicted. And people worry about the teens
because the Internet is changing the playing field for some of them. They spend more time in cyberspace than
7
in the real world of friends and family.
Is “surfing the net” a hobby or an addiction for you? You may have a problem if you have these symptoms (症状):
?You do not go to important family activities or you do not do school work because you like to spend
hours on the Internet.
?You can’t wait for your next online time.
?You plan to spend a short time online, but then you spend several hours.
?You go out with your friends less and less.
64. Are there many people who immerse (沉浸) themselves in surfing the Internet? 65. How does the writer describe the addicts’ use of Internet?
