Today I am known for my voice as much as for my acting. It has been my good fortune to receive jobs such as the speaking role of Darth Vader in George Lucas’s Star Wars trilogy and the voiceover announcer for CNN cable television. Perhaps my greatest honor came when I was asked to read the New Testament on tape.
But it took a long time to believe such good things could happen to me. When I was a youngster I stuttered so badly I was completely unable to speak in public. Since I was eight I’d had trouble speaking. It was so bad that whenever I stood up in class to read, the other kids snickered and laughed. I always sat down, my face burning with shame.
I am not sure what caused my stuttering. Perhaps it was an emotional problem. I was born in Arkabutla, Mississippi, and when I was five, I moved to live with my grandparents on their farm near Dublin in northern Michigan. It was traumatic moving from the warm, easy ways of catfish country to the harsh climate of the north, where people seemed so different.
Fortunately I met Donald Crouch there, a tall, lean man with gray hair. English was his favorite subject and poetry was his deepest love. When he learned that I not only loved poetry but was writing it, we found a kinship. There was, however, one
difficulty between us. Professor Crouch (we always called him that) could not stand the fact that I refused to read my poems to the class. With his help, my stuttering disappeared. And encouraged by Professor Crouch, I took exams and won a scholarship
to the University of Michigan. Finally, I entered the drama department.
About two years later, I learned Donald Crouch had passed on. When I was asked to record the New Testament, I really did it for a tall, lean man with gray hair who
had not only helped to guide me to the author of the Scriptures, but as the father
of my resurrected voice, had also helped me find abundant life.

The most critical three minutes in a speech are the first three minutes. They are unique. First, the audience’s attention is naturally high because their concentration level decreases as the time elapses. Second, a speaker only has one chance to make a first impression, which is during the first minutes of the speech.
In line with the nature of the first three minutes, there are at least three goals that a speaker should achieve during this period: to grab the audience’s
attention, to establish his credibility, and to build rapport.
How to grab the audience’s attention? Try to open with a line that makes them listen. Many things can be interesting to the audience. A comment on some current
local or national events will surely get them interested. Especially effective are current events relating to retail prices, housing, cars, and fashion. Humor and anecdotes have the same effect because laughing gets the audience feeling relaxed
and ready to hear your story. However, keep them short and to the point since incomprehensible jokes and jokes that have nothing to do with the topic sometimes offend certain people.
Our next task is to establish credibility. I mean you need to make your audience
trust you. It depends on the speaker’s depth of knowledge, personal experience, level of preparedness, and appearance. Among them, I want to stress appearance, because there is not much you can do about other factors such as knowledge and experience—they
need time to be accumulated—while appearance takes much less time to take care of and sometimes it plays a more significant role than knowledge and experience. When I use the word ‘appearance’, I do not simply mean the way you dress; it also includes
the way you speak and your gestures when you speak.
Finally, we need to show respect and build rapport during the first three minutes. By showing your respect to them, you will gain further support from them. The most effective way to show respect and build rapport is to meet the audience’s expectations. Many of the expectations can only be met by good preparation before the presentation.

The need for effective public speaking will almost certainly touch you some
time in your life. Even if you never give another speech in your life, you still have
much to gain from studying public speaking.
There are many similarities between public speaking and daily conversation. The three major goals of public speaking ---- to inform, to persuade, to entertain
---- are also the three major goals of everyday conversation. In conversation, almost without thinking about it, you employ a wide range of skills. You organize your ideas logically. You tailor your message to your audience. You tell a story for maximum impact. You adapt to feedback from your listener. These are among the most important skills you will need for public speaking.
Public speaking is also different from conversation. First, public speaking is more highly structured than conversation. It usually imposes strict time limitations on the speaker, and it requires more detailed preparation than does
ordinary conversation. Second, public speaking requires more formal language. Listeners react negatively to speeches loaded with slang (俚语), jargon (行话), and
bad grammar. Third, public speaking demands different method of delivery. Effective speakers adjust their voices to the larger audience and work at avoiding distracting physical mannerisms and verbal habits.
One of the major concerns of students is stage fright. Actually, most successful speakers are nervous before making a speech. You will take a big step toward overcoming
stage fright if you think positively, choose speech topics you really care about, prepare thoroughly, and concentrate on communicating with your audience.
Because of the growing diversity of modern life, many ---- perhaps most ----
of the audiences you address will include people of different cultural, racial, and ethnic backgrounds. When you work on your speeches, be alert to how such factors might affect the responses of your listeners and take steps to adapt your message
accordingly. Above all, avoid the ethnocentric belief that your own culture or group ---- whatever it may be ---- is superior to every other culture or group.

Language is a unified system of symbols that permits a sharing of meaning.
Language allows minds to meet, merge, and mesh(相和、协调). When we “make sense” out of people’s messages, we learn to understand people.
There is no direct relationship between words and things, as Ogden and Richards’s Trangle of Meaning demonstrates. Words don’t “mean”; people give
meaning to words. A principal barrier to communication is the fact that different
people give quite different meanings to the same words. Words change across time,
from place to place, and according to individual experience.
Among the communication problems that result from changes in word meaning are
(1) bypassing (when people think they understand each other but in fact do not), and
(2) mistaking the label for the thing itself (displaying an intentional rather than an extensional orientation).
There are two strategies we can use to improve our oral language abilities. First, we can use common sense to recognize that certain styles of language are appropriate at certain times and certain places. Second, we can seek to make ourselves
as clear as possible by selecting words with meaning for our listeners, taking account of their educational level and sublanguages they understand.
Keeping each of these guidelines in mind as you interact with others should help to improve your communication skills. If you recognize that every time you communicate with others you run the risk of being misunderstood, then you will be more likely to become sensitive to the ways in which your words affect those with whom you relate. As John Condon, author of Semantics (语义) and Communication,
advises, “learning to use language intelligently begins by learning not to be used by language.”

Most job seekers will not go through an interview process like “The Apprentice,” a reality TV show, but the fundamentals are universal: making a personal connection with the interviewer, demonstrating what qualities you will bring to the position, and setting yourself apart from the competition, hopefully in a positive way. By watching the program, job seekers can learn a lot about the dynamic between interviewer and interviewee. Hiring authorities can also learn ways to judge candidates. The following are some tips for job seekers.
Don’t rely on generalities. When asked why you should be hired or not fired, back up statements with quantifiable evidence. When asked why they should be retained, Jessie and her other team members provided generalities about their leadership skills and characters, but none offered concrete examples of specific accomplishments. Dress for success. At first, the women in particular looked more like they were competing for positions with an escort service than with a major real estate company. However, they quickly came around, and learned that in order to be considered professional one has to dress in professional attire.
Ask for the job. One of the biggest mistakes many job seekers make is ruining an otherwise successful interview by not actually asking for the job. It might seem unnecessary. After all, the job seeker would not have applied if he or she did not want the job. However, by asking for the job in the interview, the job seeker is sending
a strong message to the employer that he or she is interested in the job and is enthusiastic about the opportunity.
Take responsibility for your decisions. In a performance review and even in some job interviews, particularly for upper management positions, a candidate is often asked to explain or defend actions and decisions. The employer, before investing money in a new employee, wants to make sure that you recognize problems or failures and, most importantly, that you learn something that will make you a better employee and the company more profitable. When a project leader makes excuses or blames others on the team, it does not enhance the individual’s image and it does not tell the employer that anything was learned. [共 5题 ]

Not only does Nick A. Corcodilos, a famous headhunter, have a keen eye for tracking talent, but also he gives smart advices for job candidates. Here are his new principles for successful job hunting.
Your résumé is meaningless. Headhunters know a résumé rarely gets you inside a company. All it does is outline your past-largely irrelevant since it doesn’t demonstrate that you can do the work the hiring manager needs done.
Don’t get lost in HR. Headhunters try to get around the human-resources department whenever possible. “Most HR departments create an infrastructure that primari ly involves processing paper,” Corcodilos says. “They package, organize, file and sort you. Then, if you haven’t gotten lost in the shuffle they might pass you on to a manager who actually knows what the work is all about. While the typical candidate is waiting to be interviewed by HR, the headhunter is on the phone, using a back channel to get to the hiring manager.” Do the same in your job search: apply directly to the person who will ultimately make the hire.
The real matchmaking takes place before the interview. A headhunter sends a candidate into an interview only if he or she is clearly qualified for the position. In your own job hunt, make the same effort to ensure a good fit. Know the parameters of the job when you walk into the interview. Research the company, finding out about its culture, goals, and competitors.
As you investigate a prospective employer, you’ll often find you and the company are not made for each other. “And that’s good,” Corcodilos says, “because when you do find th e right fit, you’ll walk into an interview with confidence, having decided this is where you want to work.” So give yourself an attitude adjustment. If you convince yourself the manager wants to hire you, you’ll have a positive attitude at the interview, and your attitude might influence the manager to feel good
about you.

The smart job-seeker needs to get rid of several standard myths about interviewing before starting to pound the pavement looking for a job. What follows is a list of some of these untruths and some tips to help you do your best at your next interview.
Myth 1: The aim of interviewing is to obtain a job offer
Only half true. The real aim of an interview is to obtain the job you want. That often means rejecting job offers you don’t want! Incompetent job-seekers, however, become so used to accommodating employer’s expectations that they often easily qualify for jobs they don’t want. So, before you do back -flips for an employer, be sure you want the job.
Myth 2: Always please the interviewer
Not true. Try to please yourself. Giving answers that you think will suit a potential employer, losing touch with your own feelings (in order to get in touch with some other person’s feelings) and, in general, practicing an awful policy of appeasement are certain to keep you from success and progress. Of course, don’t be hostile----nobody wants to hire someone hostile. But there is plainly a middle ground between being too ingratiating (逢迎的 )and being hostile. An effective interview (whether you are offered the job or not) is like an exciting encounter in conversation with your neighbor on an airplane.
Myth 3: Try to control the interview
Nobody “controls” an interview ----neither you nor the interviewer----although one or both parties often try. When somebody tries to control us, we resent it. When we try to control somebody, they resent us. Remember, you can’t control what employers think of you, just as they can’t control what you think of them. So hang loose when interviewing; never dominate the interview.
Myth 4: Don’t disagree with the interviewer
Another silly myth. If you don’t disagree at times, you become, in effect, a “yes” man or woman. Don’t be afraid to disagree with your interviewer---- in a pleasant and pleasing way. And don’t hesitate to change your mind. The worst that could happen would be that the interviewer thinks, “There’s a person with an open mind!” Then conventional wisdom says “be yourself,” true enough. But how many people can be themselves if they don’t feel free to disagree?

The chief purpose of work is not to produce things but to build man. It is not
so important what shape or form our work may take; what is vitally important is our attitude toward that work.
Even if the particular duty is one which doesn’t seem worth doing, if you must do it, it is important to do it right. Even if no one else will ever know whether you did it right or not, you will know. By making a commitment to quality work, you make a commitment you can be. When you do as little as possible or just enough to get by, you are not merely cheating your employer, your customers, your clients, and your co-workers, but most importantly, you cheat yourself. You cheat yourself out of an opportunity to develop pride and self-worth. You cheat yourself out of an opportunity to meet a challenge and develop your inner powers and abilities. You may be able to get away with cheating others, but you never get away with cheating yourself.
Thus, the key is a commitment to yourself to use every possible opportunity for self-development and treat every work assignment, no matter how small or boring, as a challenge that can be used in your development.
Work is a projection of self. Consciousness can regard any job as a potential opportunity for self-expression, for play, for creativity, for the furtherance of social objectives, and it can arrange the factors in the job so that they form a means of self-expression.
Most jobs contain at least some limited options for creativity. To the extent that any job can be done in different ways, the job presents you with an opportunity to project your unique abilities and values into that job. Any type of communication, written or spoken, presents a significant opportunity for creative expression. Even if your efforts are reviewed and must be toned down to fit into the mold of your organization, there is always a slight opening through which you can project your unique personality. Use these opportunities to express and confirm your existence. [共 5题 ]

三、阅读理解、完形填空题 (共 5道小题 )
42.
In writing assignments in English classes my students frequently ra ise the topic of friendship. Reading what they write, I start to understand Chi nese friendship obligations. Chinese can usually expect more from their friends than Americans can. For instance, once a student wrote that she understood tha t her friend wanted to go shopping. My student was busy and really had no time to do that, but she kept silent, put her work aside and went shopping with her friend. This is quite different from what American young people would say about friendship. In the U.S. you feel free to ask your friend for help, but you recognize that the friend may say no, if they give you a reason. A friend in Ch ina is someone who, sensing that you are in need in some way, offers to assist you without waiting to be asked. In China there are few limits on what you can ask or expect of a friend.
Another difference is that Chinese expect friendships to be more la sting. They think a true friendship is a relationship that endures through chan ges in the lives of the friends. In the U.S. a person is likely to change even “ best friends” several times over the years. Even the relationship in which p eople feel close emotionally and tell each other their secrets and personal pro blems may not survive life changes such as a move to another city, graduation f rom university, a significant change in economic circumstances, or the marriage of one of the friends. I think the reason is that friendship, like so many oth er relationships in the U.S. including marriage, depends on frequent interactio n with the other person. If the people involved do not see each other and inter act regularly, the relationship is likely to fade and die.

A friendly person does his best to make a stranger feel at home, wh erever he happens to be. Put yourself in the other fellow’ s place and make him feel welcome.
Try to remember names. It makes your new acquaintances feel happy w hen you call them by their names. It gives them the feeling that they have made an impression on you and that must mean something to them because you remember them.

No one knows exactly how many disabled people there are in the worl d, but estimates suggest the figure is over 450 million. The number of disabled people in India alone is probably more than double the total population of Can ada.
In the United Kingdom, about one in ten people have some disabilit y. Disability is not just something that happens to other people: as we get old er, many of us will become less mobile, hard of hearing or have failing eyesigh t.
Disablement can take many forms and occur at any time of life. Some people are born with disabilities. Many others become disabled as they get old er. There are many progressive disabling diseases. The longer time goes on, the worse they become. Some people are disabled in accidents. Many others may have a period of disability in the form of a mental illness. All are affected by pe ople ’ s attitude towards them.
Disables people face many physical barriers. Next time you go shopp ing or to work or visit friends, imagine how you would manage if you could not
get up steps. Or on to buses and trains. How would you cope if you could not se e where you were going or could not hear the traffic” But there are other barr iers: prejudice can be even harder to break down and ignorance inevitably repre sents by far the greatest barrier of all. It is almost impossible for the able-bodied to fully appreciate what the severely disabled go through, so it is impo rtant to draw attention to these barriers and show that it is the individual pe rson and their ability, not their disability, which counts. Michael, a typical American, stays at home on workdays. He plugs in to his personal computer terminal in order to connect with the office. After wo rk, he puts on his headphones, watches a movie on his home video recorder, or p lays baseball on the computer. On many days, Michael doesn’ t talk to any other human beings, and he doesn’ t see any people except the ones on television. Mic hael is imaginary, but his lifestyle is very possible. The inventions of modern technology seem to be cutting us off form contact with our fellow human bein g.
The world of business is one area in which technology is is olating us. Experts say, for example, that many people will soon be able to wor k at home. With access to a large central computer, employees such as office cl erks, insurance agents, and accountants could do their jobs at display terminal s in their own homes. They would never have to actually see the people they’ re dealing with. In addition, the way employees are paid will change. Workers’ sa laries will be automatically paid into their bank accounts, making paper checks unnecessary. No workers will stand in line to receive their pay or cash their checks. Personal banking will change, too. Customers will deal with machines to put in or take our money from their accounts.
Another area that technology is changing is entertainment. Music, for instance, was once a group experience. People listened to music at c oncert halls or in small social gatherings. For many people now, however, music is an individual experience. Walking along the street or sitting in their livi ng rooms, they wear headphones to build a wall of music around them. Movie ente rtainment is changing, too. Movies used to be social events. Now, fewer people are going out to see a movie. Many more are choosing to wait for a film to appe ar on television or are borrowing videotapes to watch at home. Instead of laugh
ing with others, viewers watch movies in their own living rooms. (倍速 P130) [共 5题 ]

42Most job seekers will not go through an interview process like “The Apprentice,” a reality TV show, but the fundamentals are universal: making a personal connection with the interviewer, demonstrating what qualities you will bring to the position, and setting yourself apart from the competition, hopefully in a positive way. By watching the program, job seekers can learn a lot about the dynamic between interviewer and
interviewee. Hiring authorities can also learn ways to judge candidates. The following are some tips for job seekersDon’t rely on generalities. When asked why you should be hired or not fired, back up statements with quantifiable evidence. When asked why they should be retained, Jessie and her other team members provided generalities about their leadership skills and characters, but none offered concrete examples of specific accomplishmentsDress for success. At first, the women in particular looked more like they were competing for positions with an escort service than with a major real estate company. However, they quickly came around, and learned that in order to be considered professional one has to dress in professional attireAsk for the job. One of the biggest mistakes many job seekers make is ruining an otherwise successful interview by not actually asking for the job. It might seem unnecessary. After all, the job seeker would not have applied if he or she did not want the job. However, by asking for the job in the interview, the job seeker is sending a strong message to the employer that he or she is interested in the job and is enthusiastic about the opportunity.
Take responsibility for your decisions. In a performance review and even in some job interviews, particularly for upper management positions, a candidate is often asked to explain or defend actions and decisions. The employer, before investing money in a new employee, wants to make sure that you recognize problems or failures and, most importantly, that you
learn something that will make you a better employee and the company more profitable. When a project leader makes excuses or blames others on the team, it does not enhance the individual’s image and it does not tell the employer that anything was learned. [共5题]

headhunter, have a keen eye for tracking talent, but also he gives smart advices for job candidates. Here are his new principles for successful job huntingYour résumé is meaningless. Headhunters know a résumé rarely gets you inside a company. All it does is outline your past-largely irrelevant since it doesn’t demonstrate that you can do the work the hiring manager needs done.
Don’t get lost in HR. Headhunters try to get around the
human-resources department whenever possible. “Most HR departments create an infrastructure that primarily involves processing paper,” Corcodilos says. “They package, organize, file and sort you. Then, if you haven’t gotten lost in the shuffle they might pass you on to a manager who actually knows what the work is all about. While the typical candidate is waiting to be interviewed by HR, the headhunter is on the phone, using a back channel to get to the hiring manager.” Do the same in your job
search: apply directly to the person who will ultimately make the hire.
The real matchmaking takes place before the interview. A headhunter sends a candidate into an interview only if he or she is clearly qualified
for the position. In your own job hunt, make the same effort to ensure a good fit. Know the parameters of the job when you walk into the interview. Research the company, finding out about its culture, goals, and competitors.
As you investigate a prospective employer, you’ll often find you and
the company are not made for each other. “And that’s good,” Corcodilos says, “because when you do find the right fit, you’ll walk into an interview with confidence, having decided this is where you want to work.” So give yourself an attitude adjustment. If you convince yourself
the manager wants to hire you, you’ll have a positive attitude at the interview, and your attitude might influence the manager to feel good about you.

What follows is a list of some of these untruths and some tips to help you do your best at your next interviewMyth 1: The aim of interviewing is to obtain a job offer
Only half true. The real aim of an interview is to obtain the job you want. That often means rejecting job offers you don’t want! Incompetent job-seekers, however, become so used to accommodating employer’s expectations that they often easily qualify for jobs they don’t want.
So, before you do back-flips for an employer, be sure you want the jobMyth 2: Always please the interviewer
Not true. Try to please yourself. Giving answers that you think will suit a potential employer, losing touch with your own feelings in order to get in touch with some other person’s feelings and, in general, practicing an awful policy of appeasemen

(A) No, Thank you.
(B) I‘m glad you like it.
(C) Please, don‘t say so.
(D) No, it‘s not so good.
I‘m glad you like it. 是正确答案。
2. – It‘s been a wonderful evening. Thank you very much.
– __________________
(A) My pleasure.
(B) I‘m glad to hear that.
(C) No, thanks.
(D) It‘s ok.
‖ 而 It doesn‘t matter. 通常用于应答别人的 道歉,表示 ― 没关系 ‖ ; It‘s ok. 不符合英语习惯; No, thanks. 又与句意不符。

(C) Thanks for saying so.
(D) Good
idea.

Unfortunately, this honeymoon phase often comes to an end fairly soon. The newcomer has t o deal with transportation problems, shopping problems, or communication problems.
This may lead to the second stage of culture shock, known as the ―rejection phase‖. It is so called because it is at this point that the newcomer starts to reject the host country, complaining about and noticing only the bad things that bother them.
If you don‘t survive stage two successfully, you may find yourself moving into stage three: th e ―regression phase‖. In this pha se, you spend much of your time speaking your own language, watching videos from your home country, eating food from home. Your homeland may suddenly seem marvelously wonderful; all the difficulties that you had there are forgotten and you may find yourself wondering why you ever left.
If you survive the third stage successfully you will move into the fourth stage of culture shock called the ―recovery phase‖. In this stage you start to realize that no country is that much bette r than another — it is just different lifestyles and different ways to deal with the problems of life. With this complete adjustment, you accept the food, drinks, habits and customs of the host count ry, and you may even find yourself preferring some things in the host country to things at home. Finally you have become comfortable in the new place.
Much later, you may find yourself returning to your homeland and — guess what? — you may fi nd yourself entering the fifth phase of culture shock. This is called ―reverse culture shock‖ . You have been away for a long time, becoming comfortable with the habits and customs of a new lif estyle and you may find that you are no longer completely comfortable in your home country. [共 5题 ]

Almost everyone who studies, lives or works abroad experiences some degree of culture sho ck. This period of cultural adjustment involves everything from getting used to the food and langu age to learning how to use the telephone. 冘 Start a journal of the new things you come across every day and your reactions to your new home. Writing things down will help you keep them in perspective, and are funny to look ba ck on!
冘 Never confuse your ability to speak the new language with your intelligence; it is easy to feel stupid and get down on yourself, but there is no reason to. It takes everyone some time to adjust and become comfortable with a new language.

冘 Keep your sense of humor. Try, no matter how hard it is, to see something of value in e very new experience and challenge you come across. Laugh now, not just later!
冘 Take advantage of services that your university, church or community offer. Contact a cou nselor at the International Students Office, a resident advisor if you live in residence halls, some one at your church
If you are having a problem with something, tell someone! They will want to help you, and y ou w ill feel a lot better having people to support you. Donˇt be afraid to speak up.

It was a normal summer night. Humidity hung in the thick air.
I couldn‘t go to sleep, partly because of my cold and partly because of my expectations for the next day. My mum had said that tomorrow was going to be a surprise.
Sweat stuck to my aching body. Finally, gathered enough strength to sit up. I looked out of my small window into the night. There was a big bright moon hanging in the sky, giving off a magic light.
I couldn‘t stand the pressure anymore, so I did what I always do to make myself feel be tter. I went to the bathroom and picked up my toothbrush and toothpaste. I cleaned my teeth as if there was no tomorrow. Back and forth, up and down.
Then I walked downstairs to look for some signs of movement, some life. Gladiator, my cat, frightened me as he meowed his sad song. He was on the old orange couch, sitting up on his front legs, waiting for something to happen. He looked at me as if to say ―I‘m lonely, pet m e. I need a good hug.‖ Even the couch begged me to sit on it .
In one movement I settled down onto the soft couch. This couch represented my parent s‘ marriage, my birth, and hundreds of other little events.
As I held Gladiator, my heart started beating heavily. My mind was flooded with question: What‘s life? Am I really alive? Are you listening to me? Every time I moved my hand down Gla diator‘s body, I had a new thought; each touch sang a different song.
I forgot all about the heat and the next day‘s surprise. The atmosphere was so full of w
armth and silence that I sank into its arms. Falling asleep with the big cat in my arms, I felt all my worries slowly move away.

Differences in American schools compared with those found in the majority of other countries lie in the fact that education here has long been intended for everyone — not just for a privileg ed elite. Schools are expected to meet the needs of every child, regardless of ability, and also t he needs of society itself. This means that public schools offer more than academic subjects. It surprises many people when they come here to find high schools offering such courses as typin g, sewing, repair of radio, computer programming or driver training, along with traditional academi c subjects such as mathematics, history, and languages. Students choose their curricula dependin g on their interests, future goals, and level of ability. The underlying goal of American education is to develop every child to the utmost of his or her own possibilities, and to give each one a s ense of civic and community consciousness.
Schools have traditionally played an important role in creating national unity and ―Americanizin g‖ the millions of immigrants who have poured into this country from many different backgrounds and origins. Schools still play a large role in the community, especially in the small towns. The approach to teaching may seem unfamiliar to many, not only because it is informal, but also because there is not much emphasis on learning facts. Instead, Americans try to teach their children to think for themselves and to develop their own intellectual and creative abilities. Stud ents spend much time, learning how to use resource materials, libraries, statistics and computers. Americans believe that if children are taught to reason well and to research well, they will be a
ble to find whatever facts they need throughout the rest of their lives. Knowing how to solve pro blems is considered more important than the accumulation of facts.
